Lluís Solé, PhD is a musician and researcher. Actually is professor of Music Pedagogy at Universitat de Vic-Universitat Central de Catalunya in Spain. He is formed as Biologist and as instrumentist of piano, recorder, harpsichord, cornett and bansuri. He has worked as music soloist and as teacher in secondary education. Also is founder and conductor of the UVic’s Inclusive Orchestra, an access and equity project on music practice based in the application of Universal Design Principles to orchestras. His interests are focused on accessibility in instrumental music making and participation in music regardless individual musical skills (abilities). He is interested also in the Arts-Based processes (Inquiry, Evaluation, Assessment or dissemination) through the music.

In order to define the nature of informal music, specifically music making and its multidimension... more In order to define the nature of informal music, specifically music making and its multidimensional connections with one's well-being, a brief history of how music making is understood is first offered in order to delineate associated research and music-learning models. It is hoped that this will provide some detailed definition of the contemporary context of music making, so that the approach of "Universal Design," among others, in the making of music might be understood as a paradigm shift that might have benefits for well-being. Informal music making is in short defined as categorically separated from formal music making, but their overlapping and dynamic relationship is nonetheless recognized and also further expanded upon. Informal music making is also aligned to understandings of the intuitivist and rationalist composer.

How music accessibility can be used in art-based research experiences

Arts-based Research (ABR) ‘can be defined as the systematic use of the artistic process, the actu... more Arts-based Research (ABR) ‘can be defined as the systematic use of the artistic process, the actual making of artistic expressions in all of the different forms of the arts, as a primary way of understanding and examining experience by both researchers and the people that they involve in their studies’ (Knowles & Cole, 2008, p. 29). However, music is an art form that in Western culture, the practice of which is usually restricted to a few individuals with specific skills. Commonly, musical activities are left out of ABR works because of the inherent difficulties of the musical process. In this article, we review and provide multiple ways of how, through accessibility processes, music can be made by a wide range of participants regardless of their musical knowledge. The argument is made that the ways of accessibility presented open up the possibilities of using a wide-ranging use of participatory musical activities in research inquiries, assessment and evaluation. This chapter thus focuses on the ways in which music making can be made accessible and so increase the possibilities of its use partially or entirely as a provocation for inquiry, in collecting and analysing data, as a means of dissemination in research, assessment and evaluation processes

In artistic disciplines, creative processes are frequently employed to assess or evaluate different students' skills. The purpose of this study is to identify potential pitfalls for students involved in artistic practices in which being creative is essential.Design/methodology/approachThree focus groups involving Education Faculty members from different artistic disciplines allowed for the identification of several constraints when creativity was invoked. RESUM En aquest article, després d'analitzar les diferents opcions actuals en la praxi i la inter... more RESUM En aquest article, després d'analitzar les diferents opcions actuals en la praxi i la interpretació musical dins de l'aula en l'escola primària, s'intenta oferir una metodologia de treball basada en la utilització dels anomenats baixos obstinats. Aquest és el resultat d'una dilatada experiència personal de l'autor en els camps de la interpretació de la músi-ca renaixentista i barroca, així com de la docència en centres d'ensenyament secundari. S'analitzen els objectius i els avantatges pedagògics que aquest procediment ens ofereix per tal de brindar al docent especialista en música una eina que facilita, agilitza i acosta una vivència musical extraordinàriament satisfactòria a l'infant. PARAULES CLAU: educació musical, pràctica instrumental, baix obstinat, aprenentat-ge per acció i aprenentatge a través de l'experiència. THE BASSO OSTINATO IN MUSICAL PRACTICE IN SCHOOLS. A METHODOLOGICAL PROPOSAL ABSTRACT In this article, after analysing the different current options in the practice and and performance of music in primary school, the author offers a working methodology based on the use of the so-called basso ostinato. This is the result of the author's longs-tanding experience in the fields of performance of Renaissance and Baroque music and in secondary teaching centres. He analyses the pedagogical objectives and the advantages this procedure offers, in order to give the specialist music teacher a tool that flexibly provides children with a an extraordinarily satisfactory musical experience. Universal Design (UD) is a framework that emerged from the field of architecture to purpose the d... more Universal Design (UD) is a framework that emerged from the field of architecture to purpose the design of products and environments to be usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialised design. During the last two decades it has been applied and adapted to new frameworks. This research aims to explore the possibilities of implementing this paradigm in the field of groupal instrumental music in order to appreciate and disseminate the musical phenomenon and its praxialist approach to the greatest number of people. The aims are to identify factors favouring the implementation of the principles of Universal Design for orchestras and formulate guidelines for applying these principles to the organisation, operation and continuity of orchestras wishing to address Western repertoire. For this purpose, and based on experience and bibliographic review, we have created an orchestra focused on universal access. Different tools have been applied to participants in a pilot orchestra and experts in the field of instrumental music groups. These consisted of three surveys and two focus groups. The results have enabled us to identify facilitating factors and establish some guidelines for applying the principles of DU for designing accessible orchestras. This opens a new line to explore on the application of DU in the field of music.
