This study was undertaken at the welfare clinic University Health Service of Ahmadu Bello University, Samaru, Zaria, Nigeria, inorder to establish the nutritional status, feeding practices and rates of exclusive breastfeeding and childhood immunization. Forty questionnaires were administered to mother and anthropometric measurements of the children were taken. It was found that 72% of the mothers practice exclusive breastfeeding while 62% of them introduced complementary feeding at the appropriate age of 6 months. Rates of childhood immunization and vitamin supplementation were 92-97% and analysis of anthropometric data indicates that most of the infants have a moderate weight and height for their age. It is recommended that adequate counselling of mothers could help to further attain and maintain the good nutritional status of children attending infant welfare clinic at UHS ABU.

Lead(II) ion is a very toxic element known to cause detrimental effects to human health even at very low concentrations. An adsorbent prepared using mucilaginous leaves from Diceriocaryum eriocarpum plant (DEP) was used for the adsorption of lead(II) ion from aqueous solution. Batch experiments were performed on simulated aqueous solutions under optimized conditions of adsorbent dosage, contact time, pH and initial lead(II) ion concentration at 298 K. The Langmuir isotherm model more suitably described the adsorption process than the Freundlich model with linearized coefficients of 0.9661 and 0.9547, respectively. Pseudo-second order kinetic equation best described the kinetics of the reaction. Fourier transform infra-red analysis confirmed the presence of amino (-NH), carbonyl (-C=O) and hydroxyl (-OH) functional groups. Application of the prepared adsorbent to wastewater samples of 10 mg/L and 12 mg/L of lead(II) ion concentration taken from a waste stabilization pond showed removal efficiencies of 95.8% and 96.4%, respectively. Futhermore, 0.1 M HCl was a better desorbing agent than 0.1 M NaOH and de-ionized water. The experimental data obtained demonstrated that mucilaginous leaves from DEP can be used as a suitable adsorbent for lead(II) ion removal from wastewater.

This study was carried out to evaluate the current water quality of Dzindi River in Limpopo Province, South Africa. pH, electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDS) and turbidity were measured using a pH meter, EC and TDS multimeter and a turbidimeter respectively. The water samples were collected from four different sampling points along the river and digested with concentrated nitric acid in a fume cupboard. The concentrations of the selected heavy metals (Al, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb, and Zn) were determined in triplicate using a Perkin Elmer Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. The pH values (7.47-7.53) from the sampling sites were lower than what is recommended by the Department of Water and Forestry (DWAF) guidelines of South Africa. The EC and TDS values obtained (30-133 mS/cm and 20.10-89.11 mg/l) were within the recommended guideline of DWAF. Turbidity values (4.61-25.82 NTU) exceeded the recommended level of ≤1NTU for domestic water use. The average concentrations of all the metals investigated were higher than the recommended levels of DWAF for the protection of aquatic life and domestic water use except copper. The order of heavy metal contamination followed the trend: Fe (1.33 mg/l) >Al (0.3 mg/l)>Mn (0.15 mg/l) >Zn (0.10 mg/l) >Cr (0.06 mg/l)>Cu (0.05 mg/l)> Pb (0.03 mg/l). Results from this investigation reveals that Dzindi River is contaminated with heavy metals and should not be used for domestic purposes without treatment due to the probable health effects it may have on the user, but it is suitable for irrigation purposes.

This is regardless of the fact that they are very toxic and contain constituents which are persistent in nature. Once released into the environment, they can remain stable for exceptionally long periods of time. They have the potential to be harmful to public health and the environment if not handled, used, and disposed properly. This study reports the level of knowledge and management of HHWs in three tertiary institutions in sub-Saharan Africa. Several factors were found to be responsible for poor management of HHWs. These include lack of awareness, inadequate treatment technologies, financial constraints, lack of realistic policies and legal frameworks, and unplanned settlements, among others.

Leather tanned from raw hides and skins have been used to cover and protect the human body since early man. The skin of an animal carries thousands of microbes. Some are beneficial and protect the animal while others are pathogenic and cause diseases. Some microbes have no defined roles in animals. These microbes end up in the human body through contact with the animal skin. In recent years, the human body has been studied as an ecosystem where trillions of microorganisms live as a community called microbiome. Humans need beneficial microbes like Bacillus subtilis on the skin surface to stay healthy. Many microbes need the human body to survive. Not many studies have looked into the close link between animal leather and the human microbiome. The assumption is that conventional leather processes inhibit the pathogens on skins from carrying any risk of microbial hazard to the human body. This chapter identifies endemic microbes of "animal skin microbiome" that withstand extreme acidity and alkalinity of leather manufacture and their transmission to humans. Some cause allergic reactions, skin lesion, infections or death to tannery employees with weakened immune systems. This promotes the need to look at leather product microbiome impact on human health.

This study reports on the assessment of the growth potential of five edible vegetables, which were grown in Cr(VI) spiked soils. The vegetable plants that were used in this study were Vigna angularis, Cicer arietinum, Spinacia oleracea, Amaranthus dubius Thell and Phaseolus vulgaris. Dried ground samples from roots, stems and leaves were analysed for various oxidation states of Cr. The daily intake of chromium, hazard quotient (HQ) and hazard index (HI) methods were employed to assess the potential human health risks posed by these Cr oxidation states through vegetable consumption. The results showed that Vigna angularis was the only vegetable that germinated in highly concentrated Cr(VI) in the simulated soil (456 mg/kg). The highest total chromium (ChT) bioaccumulated in the roots was found in Phaseolus vulgaris at 0.8. This review evaluates the current Landfill Gas (LFG) utilisation technology across Africa and gives general overview on the global context. With the increase in global Municipal Solid Waste (MSW), the world has embraced landfilling to be its major way of MSW management. About 85% of the world’s MSW is deposited in landfills. This has brought increased concerns of gases emitted from landfill sites. These gases have contributed enormously to the global anthropogenic Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emission which are detrimental to the world’s environmental media. Sustainable access to safe drinking water remains a global problem as more people in the world still consume water from unimproved sources. This study was carried out to evaluate the quality of 12 different water sources and 2 treated water used by a peri-urban town in the Southwest region of Nigeria to assess their suitability for drinking and domestic use. Water quality parameters studied include pH, temperature, acidity, total alkalinity, chloride content and total CO2. A Flame Atomic Absorption spectrophotometer was used to determine the concentrations of Ca, Mg, Cu, Cr, and Pb in the water samples. Landfilling of solid wastes has gained increasing acceptance due to the ease of disposal. However, such activity has consequences if the landfill site is not designed according to specification or does not have a leachate liner and collection system. Leachate possesses potential risk to surface and groundwater aquifer within the area surrounding the landfill site. The aim of this chapter is to assess the physicochemical parameters and heavy metal levels in leachate generated from a periurban landfill site situated in Thohoyandou, Limpopo Province, South Africa. Physicochemical parameters were measured onsite using standard methods, while heavy metals were analyzed with flame atomic absorption spectrometer (FAAS) after nitric acid digestion. pH, conductivity and turbidity values ranged from 6.97 to 7.68, 426 to 2288 μS/cm and 12.78 to 295.5 NTU, respectively. Most levels of the determined heavy metals exceeded the effluent discharge guideline limit of South African Department of Water Affairs. This could potentially spike their levels in surface and groundwater. Adequate measures should be put in place to manage the leachate generated from landfill sites.

This paper presents a study on batch sorption of methylene blue dye from aqueous solution onto Ginkgo biloba sorbent, a waste material produced during the Fall season in many parts of the world. Batch kinetics, equilibrium, and thermodynamic studies were conducted to evaluate the effect of contact time (0–150 min), sorbent dose (0.5–3.0 g/L), pH (2–11), temperature (30–50°C), initial MB concentration (10–30 mg/L), and particle size (177 μm—590 μm) on the methylene blue dye sorption. More than 99% removal of methylene blue was observed within 120 minutes. A Lagergren pseudo-first-order model, a pseudo-second-order model, and intraparticle diffusion models fitted well to the kinetics experimental data. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models also fitted well with the observed equilibrium data. Additionally, removal of methylene blue increased with increase in solution pH. In this study, the potential for pulverized raw macadamia nut shell (MNS) for the sequestration of methylene blue from aqueous media was assessed. The sorbent was characterized using scanning electron microscopy for surface morphology, functional group analysis was performed with a Fourier-transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR), and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) isotherm was used for surface area elucidation. Numerous pollutants, including dyes, heavy metals, pesticides, and microorganisms, are found in wastewater and have great consequences when discharged onto natural freshwater sources. Heavy metals are predominantly reported in wastewater. Heavy metals are persistent, non-biodegradable and toxic, transforming from a less toxic form to more toxic forms in environmental media under favourable conditions. Among heavy metals, copper is dominantly found in wastewater effluent. In this review, the effects of high concentration of copper in plants and living tissues of both aquatic animals and humans are identified. Carbonaceous shale is more topical than ever before due to the associated unconventional resources of methane. The use of FTIR, SEM-EDX, and mineralogical analyses has demonstrated a promising approach to assess methanogenesis potentials in a more rapid and reliable manner for preliminary prospecting. Representative core samples from the borehole that penetrated the carbonaceous Mikambeni shale Formations were investigated for methanogenesis potentials. The absorption band stretches from 1650 cm−1 to 1220 cm−1 in wavenumber, corresponding to C-O stretching and OH deformation of acetic and phenolic groups in all studied samples, thereby suggesting biogenic methanogenesis. The brick making industry, despite its contribution to environmental pollution, plays a major role in the economic growth of South Africa, with the traditional technology accounting for a significant proportion of the total clay brick production. The aim of this study is to undertake a comprehensive description of the production phases of the traditional brick making sector in Vhembe district and how this contributes to air pollution. The study comprised a series of interviews and questionnaires of key role players from two small villages, Manini and Tshilungoma in the Vhembe district. In-situ observations of the production methods and phases were also undertaken between June and December 2019.
