My research is originally based on the concept of recognition and expecially the reflections of Paul Ricoeur on the subject. I am exploring the recent field of philosophy of geography, by reframing a phenomenological approach on it. I write in English, French and Italian and I often move abroad for conferences.

The notion of identity is common in everyday speech and plays an important role many disciplines.... more The notion of identity is common in everyday speech and plays an important role many disciplines. Many support its apparent simplicity. David Lewis, for instance, remarks that "identity is utterly simple and aproblematic" (Lewis 1986: 192-193). However, when we discuss what it means in the frame of different disciplinary or subdisciplinary fields, it reveals its great complexity and its discipline-specific meanings. Indeed, identity might not have the same exact meaning and surely does not have the same implications in mathematics, logic, biology, the human sciences or politics. For instance, the logical sense of identity deserves precedence, as suggested by its Latin etymology (identitas = sameness). The first explicit formulation of the socalled principle of identity is still quite recent. It dates back to Christian Wolff's Ontology (1730), where he states: if A is, then it is A, for if we maintained at the same time that A both is and is not, we would violate the principle of non-contradiction. According to Wolff's metaphysics, the principle of non-contradiction is the "source of all certitude" and has an axiomatic nature which does not require any demonstration. The logical notion of identity has, in Wolff as well as in Aristotle, an ontological meaning: one thing is numerically identical with itself when it is not two, but one. Morphology meets identity at this early stage when Aristotle, by connecting the problem of identity to the one of substance (Lewis 1991; Spellman 2002), inquiries about the actual nature of substance and its relation to form. In the Sophistical Refutations, Aristotle affirms that "only two things that are indistinguishable and one in substance does it seem that all the same attributes belong" (Aristotle 1955: 179a 37). In the framework of Aristotle's philosophy, this apparently simple claim is problematic. According to Aristotle, all that can be known of individuals is their essence-an individual person's essence, by definition, is to be human; and yet, essence is not enough to differentiate among individuals belonging to the same species. Digital hermeneutics: from interpreting with machines to interpretational machines

Today, there is an emerging interest for the potential role of hermeneutics in reflecting on the ... more Today, there is an emerging interest for the potential role of hermeneutics in reflecting on the practices related to digital technologies and their consequences. Nonetheless, such an interest has not yet given rise to a unitary approach nor to a shared debate. The primary goal of this paper is to map and synthetize the different existing perspectives in order to pave the way for an open discussion on the topic. The article is developed in two steps. In the first section, the authors analyse digital hermeneutics "in theory" by confronting and systematising the existing literature. In particular, they stress three main distinctions among the approaches: 1) between "methodological" and "ontological" digital hermeneutics; 2) between data-and text-oriented digital hermeneutics and 3) between "quantitative" and "qualitative" credos in digital hermeneutics. In the second section, they consider digital hermeneutics "in action", by critically analysing the uses of digital data (notably tweets) for studying a classical object such as the political opinion. In the conclusion, we will pave the way to an ontological turn in digital hermeneutics. Most of this article is devoted to the methodological issue of interpreting with digital machines. The main task of an ontological digital hermeneutics would consist instead in wondering if it is legitimate, and eventually to which extent, to speak of digital technologies, or at least of some of them, as interpretational machines.

Il team di ricerca è guidato da Federico Vercellone e composto da Peppino Ortoleva, Chiara Simonigh, Teresa Biondi e il sottoscritto: docenti, assegnisti e borsisti dei Dipartimenti di Filosofia e Scienze dell'Educazione e di Lingue e Letterature Straniere e Culture Moderne dell'Università di Torino. Il fine del progetto era di offrire un contributo peculiare alla ricerca teorica intorno alle questioni del paesaggio, dello spazio e del luogo, del rapporto tra memoria e trasformazione. Plaidoyer pour l'utopie ecclésiale: l'utopie de l'humanité comme une et présente en chacun

Il s'agit dans cet article de montrer certains liens existant entre la conception militante de l'... more Il s'agit dans cet article de montrer certains liens existant entre la conception militante de l'utopie que Ricoeur a proposée dans les textes rassemblés dans Plaidoyer pour l'utopie ecclésiale des années 60 et la notion philosophique d'utopie développée dans les conférences et les recherches des années 70. Les enjeux purement éthiques de l'utopie, dans la mesure où ils visent à la fois l'accomplissement de l'humanité dans son universalité et dans sa singularité, sont surtout envisagés dans le cadre du discours militant de Ricoeur, don't Plaidoyer pour l'utopie ecclésiale est une bonne illustration. Cette utopie de l'humanité accomplie était déjà présente et active pendant le militantisme de jeunesse de Ricoeur dans le cadre du socialisme révolutionnaire anti-soviétique. Elle fournit un arrière-plan extra-philosophique à la conception philosophique de l'utopie comme l'un des deux pôles de l'imagination sociale, ainsi qu'aux analyses consacrées à Marx, au personnalisme de Mounier et à l'imagination transcendantale de Husserl.

The aim of this article is to show how a Ricœurian approach to space and place is likely to raise... more The aim of this article is to show how a Ricœurian approach to space and place is likely to raise issues about geography and even cartography, rather than just ontological topology in a Heideggerian fashion. Two steps will lead towards that conclusion: the first concerns the role of Ricœur’s long détour in the transition from a transcendental—therefore empty—notion of place to the concrete plurality of places, which turns them into matters for interpretation; the second shows how the task of interpreting of places implies distanciation and even objectification, through which they are constituted as objects of scientific and critical investigation. Maps will be introduced at that point as specific interpretations of places, halfway between text and images, between the subject and the object, and between science and art.
