Since 1996-97, I have been an assistant professor in Logic at the Department of Philosophy and Social Sciences, University of Salento.

At the same university, I have taught Philosophy and Theories of Languages at the Faculty of Humanities and Philosophy and Logic of Science at the Faculty of Education Sciences, from 2002-03 to 2004-05 and from 2007-08 to 2010-11, respectively. Besides, I have been teaching on the Doctoral Programme in Ethics and Anthropology since 2006-07.

A Pragmatic Logic for Expressivism

This article aims to show that the incompatibility between the application of logic to norms and ... more This article aims to show that the incompatibility between the application of logic to norms and values and the expressive conception of these notions – basically summed up by the Frege–Geach problem – can be overcome. To this end, a logic is constructed for the expressive conception of norms and values which provides a solution to the Frege–Geach problem and is not affected by the limitations that occur in some previous attempts. More specifically, a pragmatic language LP is introduced which is an extension of the language L of standard propositional logic, obtained by adding two categories of logical‐pragmatic signs to the vocabulary of L: the signs of pragmatic mood and the pragmatic connectives. The notions of pragmatic validity, consistency (satisfiability), compatibility, equivalence and inference are then defined, and some criteria of pragmatic validity are given. It is thus possible to carry out in LP inferences on norms and values expressively understood, adequately formalizing Geach's problematic inferences.

Then, we exhibit a formalized presentation of the mathematical structure of the JP theory by introducing it as a completely formalized syntactic system, i.e., we construct a formalized language L e and formally state the logical-deductive structure of the JP theory by means of L e. Finally, we show that the JP syntactic system can be endowed with an intended interpretation, which yields a physical model of the system. A mathematical model endowed with a physical interpretation is given which establishes (in the usual sense of the model theory) the coherence of the JP syntactic system.

In this paper I intend to overcome the incompatibility -basically expressed by the Frege-Geach pr... more In this paper I intend to overcome the incompatibility -basically expressed by the Frege-Geach problem-between the expressive conception of norms and values and the applicability of logic to them, as well as the widespread scepticism about a possible "logic of attitudes" (Hale). To this end, I present a logic for the expressive conception of norms and values providing a solution to the Frege-Geach problem, that is immune to the ambiguities affecting two previous attempts by Blackburn (1984 and [1988] 1993). In particular, I use and extend a pragmatic language L p , that is an extension of the language of standard propositional logic L, which is obtained by adding two categories of logical-pragmatic signs to the vocabulary of L: the signs of pragmatic mood (├, O and H, standing for 'assertion', 'obligation' and 'approval', respectively) and the pragmatic connectives (∼, ∩, ∪, ⊃, ≡). The wffs of L are called radical formulas (rf) of L p . By applying the signs of pragmatic mood to the rfs, we obtain elementary sentential formulas (sf) (assertive, normative, evaluative) of L p , that can be connected by means of the pragmatic connectives, so obtaining complex sfs. Every rf of L p has a truth value and every sf has a justification value, which is defined in terms of the intuitive notion of proof and which depends on the truth value of its radical subformulas. In this language, the notions of pragmatic validity, compatibility, satisfiability and inference are defined and some criteria of pragmatic validity are given. Therefore, in L p , it is possible to carry out inferences between norms and values expressively understood and, thus, to adequately formalize Geach's problematic inferences.
