Davide Astiaso Garcia, PhD in Thermal Science, Energy Technology and Building Physics in 2011, is Assistant Professor of Thermal Sciences, Energy Technology and Building Physics at the Department of Astronautical, Electrical and Energy Engineering (DIAEE) of the Sapienza University of Rome.
In 2017 he got the National Academic Qualification as Associate Professor in Thermal Science, Energy Technology and Building Physics (09C2).
Furthermore, he is the Secretary General of the Italian Wind Energy Association (ANEV), the Secretary General of Coordinamento FREE (Coordination of Renewable Sources and Energy Efficiency).
His research activities at DIAEE started in 2006. He is the Project Coordinator of PRISMI (Promoting RES Integration for Smart Mediterranean Islands), WP leader of the ODYSSEA (Operating a network of integrated observatory systems in the Mediterranean Sea) project, Chairman of the Steering Committee and Project Contact Person of the GREAT Med project. He has scientific expertise in more than 15 national and international research projects and he is author of more than 60 publications on journals and national and international congresses mainly concerning energy themes.

Some preliminary studies on COVID-19 pandemia have shown that air pollutants may have a strong impact on virus effects. Improved gas sensors and wireless communication systems open the door to the design of new air monitoring systems based on citizen science to better monitor and communicate the air quality levels. In this paper, we present the Crowdsourced Air Quality Monitoring (C-AQM) system, which relies on Air Quality Monitoring reference stations and a cluster of new low-cost and low-energy sensor nodes, in order to improve the resolution of air quality maps. The data collected by the C-AQM system is stored in a time series database and is available both to city council managers for decision making and to citizens for informative purposes. In this paper, we present the main bases of the C-AQM system as well as the measurements validation campaign carried out.

Smart Energy Systems for Increasing the Energy Independence of Small Islands: Integrating Renewable Energies, Storage Systems and Sustainable Mobility

Several islands around the world are facing common challenges in terms of high energy costs, loca... more Several islands around the world are facing common challenges in terms of high energy costs, local CO2 emissions, security of supply and system stability. In EU, many islands have become sites of energy innovation, where betting on Renewable Energy Sources (RES) is a winning choice to meet their energy needs. In this framework, renewable energies play a key role for supporting the transition of small islands to an autonomous, cleaner and low-carbon energy systemin line with the overall EU Energy Union package and EU2030 goals. The intervention will deal with the suitability of smart energy systems in the insular context. Particularly, the use of several RES generators in the grid will be discussed as well as the potential synergies that can be obtained by coupling different energy sectors such as the sectors of transport, heating and water production. In detail, the benefits in terms of enhanced grid flexibility and thus the potential increase of RES penetration without compromising the island electric grid will be presented. Particularly, the speech will consider solutions that exploit synergies between different energy consuming sectors trough power-to-X solutions. Where X stands for i) transport through the use of Electric Vehicles (EVs), ii) heating by means of Heat Pumps (HPs) and iii) hydrogen produced by electrolysis used in Fuel-cell Electric Vehicles (FCEVs) or in Hydrogen Compressed and Natural Gas (HCNG) blend fuelled buses in the public transportation sector. All of the above-mentioned solutions will be presented by means of several energy scenarios applied to the island of Favignana, Italy. Results will be presented and discussed focusing on the energetic point of view as well as the economic and the environmental aspects. The intervention will end proposing interesting hint for future research topics related to innovative market schemes able to trigger the above-mentioned solutions and also the cascade effect that RES investments have on island communities.

In this study, detailed thermo-economic analysis and parametric studies are conducted to evaluate... more In this study, detailed thermo-economic analysis and parametric studies are conducted to evaluate the performance of a hybrid triple effect parallel flow water-lithium bromide (H 2 O-LiBr) absorption-compression cycle, that integrates a compressor between the evaporator and absorber. Optimization using a particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is conducted to identify the optimum operating conditions of the system under various conditions. The results show that the effect of integrating the compressor on thermo-economic performance is different under various operating conditions. However, it significantly improves the coefficient of performance (COP) and the improvement decreases with a further increase in the compressor pressure ratio. Integrating the compressor makes the system operation practical under certain operating conditions, especially at high condenser temperatures, where a typical system fails to operate. The results show that employing the compressor is not always economically attractive and requires careful consideration. For an evaporator temperature of°C 6 , a COP enhancement of over 200% can be achieved at a condenser temperature of°C 40 , which corresponds to 57% reduction in the unit production cost of cooling. Performing a detailed optimization using a robust algorithm like PSO is very useful in designing a thermodynamically and economically efficient hybrid system.

This paper proposes a new methodology to analyse the indoor air quality with a cheap and third-age-dedicated device. A new prototype, called Home Pollution Embedded System (HOPES), was developed to give simple and understandable information, also comprehensible for people with cognitive problems or that are not familiar with new technologies. The device gathers pollutants data and displays to the user different air pollutants concentrations, from toxics gasses up to explosives. Moreover, an overall air quality index has been elaborated and is displayed by HOPES with lights and numerical information. HOPES is an Internet of things device that works in real time and that can be connected to the web and to a geographic information system platform to add spatial information of each pollutant. The hardware architecture employs a set of gas semiconductor sensors and an IR particulate matter sensor. Experimental results demonstrated that HOPES has an accurate sensor response and is suitable to be used with the proposed indices. In fact, despite of the poor-selective metal oxide sensors, the results highlighted how it is possible to get useful air quality information with a cheap device. However, the system needs more tests to validate the sensors array with different substances. The development of new tools that allow continuous monitoring of air quality is essential for the... more The development of new tools that allow continuous monitoring of air quality is essential for the study of actions, in order to improve the levels of pollutants in the air that are harmful to the health of citizens. Cardiovascular and respiratory diseases have been identified as risk factors for death in patients with COVID-19; at the same time, exposure to air pollution is associated with these diseases. In this article, we present the pilot tests of the Crowdsourced Air Quality Monitoring (C-AQM) system, which allows the generation of reliable air pollution maps, using data provided by low-cost sensor nodes. The results verify that the system is correct after performing a data calibration; an improvement in NO2 pollution has been observed on weekends, as well as a situation of less air pollution by NO2 between the first and second pandemic waves in Spain.

Abstract A novel integrated energy system based on a geothermal heat source and a liquefied natur... more Abstract A novel integrated energy system based on a geothermal heat source and a liquefied natural gas heat sink is proposed in this study for providing heating, cooling, electricity power, and drinking water simultaneously. The arrangement is a cascade incorporating a flash-binary geothermal system, a regenerative organic Rankine cycle, a simple organic Rankine cycle, a vapor compression refrigeration cycle, a regasification unit, and a reverse osmosis desalination system. Energy, exergy, and exergoeconomic methods are employed to analyze the suggested system. A parametric study based on decision variables is carried out to better assess the system performance. Four different multi-objective optimization problems are also carried out. At the most excellent trade-off solution specified by the TOPSIS method, the system attains 29.15% exergy efficiency and 1.512 $/GJ total product cost per exergy unit. The main output products are consequently calculated to be 101.07 kg/s cooling water, 570.44 kW net output power, and 81.57 kg/s potable water.

Risk assessment of oil spills along the Mediterranean coast: A sensitivity analysis of the choice of hazard quantification

Quantifying the risks associated with a potential spill is often based on results generated from oil spill models. In this study, MEDSLIK-II, an EU funded and endorsed oil spill model, is used to assess potential oil spill scenarios at four pilot areas located along the northern, eastern, and southern Mediterranean shoreline, providing a wide range of spill conditions and coastal geomorphological characteristics. Oil spill risk assessment at the four pilot areas was quantified as a function of three oil pollution metrics that include the susceptibility of oiling per beach segment, the average volume of oiling expected in the event of beaching, and the average oil beaching time. The results show that while the three pollution metrics tend to agree in their hazard characterization when the shoreline morphology is simple, considerable differences in the quantification of the associated hazard is possible under complex coastal morphologies. These differences proved to greatly alter the evaluation of environmental risks. An integrative hazard index is proposed that encompasses the three simulated pollution metrics. The index promises to shed light on oil spill hazards that can be universally applied across the Mediterranean basin by integrating it with the unified oil spill risk assessment tool developed by the Regional Marine Pollution Emergency Response Centre for the Mediterranean (REMPEC).

In this study, a multi-criteria index was developed to assess anthropogenic stressors along the M... more In this study, a multi-criteria index was developed to assess anthropogenic stressors along the Mediterranean coastline. The index aimed at geo-locating pollution hotspots for informed decision making related to coastal zone management. The index was integrated in a Geographical Information System based geodatabase implemented at several pilot areas along the Northern (Italy and France), Eastern (Lebanon), and Southern (Tunisia) Mediterranean coastlines. The generated stressor maps were coupled with a biodiversity richness index and an environmental sensitivity index to produce vulnerability maps that can form the basis for prioritizing management and mitigation interventions towards the identification of pollution hotspots and the promotion of sustainable coastal zone management. The results identified significant differences between the two assessment methods, which can bias prioritization in decision making and policy planning depending on stakeholders' interests. The discrepancies emphasize the need for transparency and understanding of the underlying foundations behind vulnerability indices and mapping development.
