Tuttavia, la morte aleggia su tutte queste storie, come una nuvola che proietta una lunga ombra. Eppure, anche in questa oscurità, vi è l'opportunità di riflessione, di crescita e di trasformazione.

I vocaboli che emergono lentamente dal mio inconscio, che gocciano dalle immagini, sono riportati sulla carta fedelmente ed esprimono completamente e profondamente il mio sentito. Il mondo e il mio animo si spiegano a me in gocce di pensiero, che ho qui raccolto. Ogni goccia è la scheggia, il frammento di un tempo ed un’emozione passata che non ritorna ma forma chi sono e chi sono stata. Ogni memoria è un’onda che bagna il mio corpo e la mia anima modificandoli con il suo movimento e il suo tocco del passato che diviene presente in un moto perpetuo.

This chapter is intended for mediators and educators who identify pernicious metaphors in convers... more This chapter is intended for mediators and educators who identify pernicious metaphors in conversation, not just in personal conversations but in the general language used by large demographics. Metaphors are not just ornaments of language, they structure the world around us. They provide us with glasses to look at the world. They colour the lenses through which we view reality. Thus, dwelling on metaphors and analysing them helps us to wear the right glasses that do not distort reality. Working on metaphors, collecting and analysing them, seeing which cognitive possibilities they open up or limit would be an excellent educational tool, which could lead to a wider and more realistic worldview that considers the multiplicity inherent in each person, including whomever we consider the ‘Other.’

This chapter is interested in metaphors of depression and storytelling. I investigate the role of... more This chapter is interested in metaphors of depression and storytelling. I investigate the role of metaphors of depression and I state that they are the base on which a storytelling is developed. I understand metaphors as a matter of thought, thus I examine the influence of metaphors on: individuals reasoning about complex issues, how they search for further information and make choices and how they shape perceptions, communication. Metaphors when used in connection with a given topic create a conceptual domain – a certain organization of human experiences. Different conceptual domains have been shown to influence individuals’ framing of approaches to difficult social and policy problems: for instance Thibodeau and Boroditsky’s. Depression is framed through an abundance of metaphors. I found examples such as ‘blanket’, ‘tinted glasses’, ‘a bruise’ and ‘the weather’. Elements of the domain of depression – the target domain – originate from the source domain: so ‘variability’, and ‘darkness’ are some of them. This conceptual mapping created by the metaphor (only partially explicit in the language) is responsible for influencing the shaping of thoughts, attitudes, emotions and, ultimately, actions in connection with the target domain. This chapter suggests that an analysis of metaphors through a Type of Hierarchy (TH) method, might be a good tool for CBT practitioners, in order to identify mental distortions and the story that emerges from them.

Philosophers and scientists constantly employ conceptual metaphors in their explanations and Kuhn, over the years, makes some attempts at providing an evolutionary metaphor for scientific change. Here we discuss how biological analogies may ultimately be inadequate for the description of scientific change and how this inadequacy affects the soundness of Kuhn’s idea of incommensurability.
