Il Liber glossarum e la tradizione altomedievale di Agostino

Il Liber glossarum è un misterioso glossario enciclopedico compilato entro il secolo VIII, che co... more Il Liber glossarum è un misterioso glossario enciclopedico compilato entro il secolo VIII, che comprende circa 56.000 voci tratte da fonti lessicografiche, grammaticali, tecnico-scientifiche, geografiche, esegetiche, omiletiche e molto altro. Il volume offre una sistematica analisi della relazione tra questa monumentale enciclopedia e la tradizione altomedievale di Agostino, da cui sono ricavate circa 350 delle voci incorporate nel Liber. L’indagine filologica consente da un lato di chiarire alcuni aspetti della controversa origine del glossario e dall’altro di illuminare certe dinamiche di trasmissione delle opere agostiniane, fornendo anche nuovi spunti per la loro ricostruzione testuale.

The critical text, based on seven early medieval witnesses, is preceded by a philological introduction, which – among other things – presents a new proposal for the historical contextualisation of the corpus. An ecdotic and linguistic commentary concludes the essay.

Nel corso di due convegni con il titolo Le mille facce della glossa sono state analizzate le form... more Nel corso di due convegni con il titolo Le mille facce della glossa sono state analizzate le forme testuali a carattere glossatorio e chiarificatore e le loro tecniche attuative, con prevalente attenzione per i documenti letterari dall'antichità all'età contemporanea mettendo assieme, in linea con la tradizione convegnistica bressanonese, retorica, stilistica e aspetti tematici e discorsivi. Puntando a una riflessione sull'intera fenomenologia delle forme esegetiche (glosse, note d'autore, chiose, scolii, postille, annotazioni interlineari, marginalia, autocommenti e commenti) e delle modalità glossatorie di natura ipertestuale (digressioni chiarificatrici, excursus con funzione interpretativa, frasi relative esplicative, formule di correctio), l'argomento è stato scandagliato a fondo nelle sue varie sfaccettature con risultati nuovi e di sicuro interesse. Al complesso panorama esplicativo-esegetico offerto dalle opere letterarie e alla sua ricca terminologia definitoria sono dedicati, con prospettive diverse ma convergenti nel dare rilievo ai modi, alle funzioni, alle tipologie annotatorie, i saggi raccolti nel presente volume, che attestano in maniera completa il lavoro svolto nelle sedute convegnistiche. La maggior parte riguarda la glossa e la nota in senso stretto esaminate nelle loro molteplici espressioni: dalle glosse cristiane e rabbiniche a quelle medievali dei testi patristici, da quelle integrate in altre glosse e nel testo a quelle delle cronache tardomedievali, dei testi omiletici e di commento biblico. Un rilievo specifico è riservato alle note d'autore della poesia folenghiana e pavana, del poema romeno Ţiganiada, di Rousseau, Manzoni, Rilke, del loro impiego vasto ed elaborato nei testi poetici (italiani) e narrativi (italiani e americani) del Novecento. Sono studiati anche scrittori come Valéry, autore e 'teorico' degli aspetti testuali esplicativi, il rapporto tra note e traduzione e le note di critici e studiosi (Spitzer, Folena) particolarmente inclini al loro uso. Un altro gruppo di saggi tratta forme testuali-esegetiche diversamente articolate ma sempre con valenza fortemente esplicativa: da quelle più organiche (l'autocommento di Dante, il commento di Benjamin a Brecht) alle didascalie tardoantiche e medievali delle immagini pittoriche e manoscritte, dalle interpretazioni e "riscritture" ermeneutiche alle digressioni interne a un'opera narrativa, dal rapporto tra testi antico-francesi e inserimenti biblico-glossatori alla messa in scena di personaggi-annotatori nel teatro di Rossini.

The article presents the first conclusions that can be drawn from the integral collation of Augus... more The article presents the first conclusions that can be drawn from the integral collation of Augustine’s De ciuitate Dei book I, against all pre-10th century complete and partial manuscript witnesses (fragments excluded), in order to lay more scientific foundations for the establishment of the text of this masterpiece. First, a brief external and internal description of the manuscripts included in the corpus is provided. Second, the stemmatical configuration of the lower levels of the stemma is discussed. Lastly, the issues related to the main branches are examined, also with regard to the possible survival of authorial variants.

edizione critica a cura di Marina Giani Il testo qui edito consiste in una redazione ridotta dell... more edizione critica a cura di Marina Giani Il testo qui edito consiste in una redazione ridotta della Vita latina auctore Leone classificata come BHL 4376, una delle nove agiografie che compongono il dossier del vescovo costantinopolitano e padre della Chiesa orientale Giovanni Crisostomo. Si tratta di una traduzione dal greco effettuata prima della fine del X secolo da Leone il Cieco, un chierico dell'Italia centrale o meridionale altrimenti ignoto 1. L'unica fonte per le notizie sull'autore e sulla genesi dell'opera è il prologo della Vita stessa, dal quale si evince che essa nacque dall'interazione e dalla collaborazione fra tre personaggi: dedicatario e committente fu un prelato definito vir nunc Lupus, quondam Iulianus nomine (sull'identificazione del quale sono state avanzate alcune proposte, nessuna delle quali però definitiva) 2 ; interpretans fu un certo Christophorus reverendus sacerdos, il quale eseguì una traduzione interlineare dal testo greco al latino parlato all'epoca, poi revisionata e redatta in stile elevato da Leone, l'agiografo vero e proprio, cieco fin dalla nascita. 1. Il governatore della regione, Urbano, esegue gli ordini imperiali imprigionando e sottoponendo a giudizio numerosi confessori. Una giovane nobildonna cristiana proveniente da Tiro, di nome Teodosia, viene sorpresa dalle guardie mentre si reca a salutare i correligionari rinchiusi in carcere. Portata al cospetto del governatore, alla richiesta di sacrificare agli dei pagani rifiuta con decisione. È perciò punita da Urbano, che ordina di dilaniarle i fianchi e il petto con degli uncini e poi di gettarla in mare. Questi gli avvenimenti secondo Eusebio di Cesarea, che nel suo De martyribus Palaestinae 1 racconta i travagli subiti dalla comunità cristiana durante la persecuzione dioclezianea nella sua regione. Questo opuscolo storico-apologetico si conserva oggi in due redazioni d'autore: quella più breve è inserita da alcuni manoscritti all'interno dei libri VIII o X dell'Historia Ecclesiastica 2 , mentre la redazione lunga è testimoniata da

Despite the crucial role of Augustine’s De ciuitate Dei in shaping Christian identity and its inf... more Despite the crucial role of Augustine’s De ciuitate Dei in shaping Christian identity and its influence on Western culture, we are still far from understanding the paths of its medieval transmission and dissemination. This paper aims to list a number of loci critici supporting the hypothesis of the genealogical relatedness – limited to book XVIII, in the current state of knowledge – of four 9th–century witnesses, namely
Brescia, Biblioteca Queriniana, G.III.3; München, Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, Clm 6267 (pars recentior); Oxford, Bodleian Library, Laud misc. 135; and Vercelli, Biblioteca Capitolare, LXXI (52). These loci have been singled out by collating randomly selected sample passages from the sole book XVIII, which is the longest in the entire work and the most frequently equipped with tabulae capitulorum. This enquiry
is to be intended as a first attempt to shed some light on a largely unexplored topic, which deserves to be examined in much more depth and on the basis of a broader array of data.

The paper presents some critical and exegetical notes on the extensive homiletic digressions in t... more The paper presents some critical and exegetical notes on the extensive homiletic digressions in the anonymous Passio Theodosiae, which are one of the few original traits in this otherwise standard hagiographical account. These passages consist either in literal quotations from Patristic works or in original pieces inspired by Patristic and ‘monastic’ sermons and rules, which allows to shed some light on the historical context in which the Passio originated. The contribution is mainly focused on an excerpt about liturgical chants from Niceta of Remesiana’s homily De psalmodiae bono, and explores the relevance of this sermon for the hagiographer, as well as the role of the Passio in its medieval transmission.

The research has been conducted through a wide bibliographical recognition, which has taken into account the physical resources available at the KU Leuven Special Collections as well as a wide selection of online digital tools. This research has resulted in a coherent prospect of selected data, which would otherwise be disseminated in the secondary literature.

The article summarizes the state of the art as regards the late-antique and early medieval direct... more The article summarizes the state of the art as regards the late-antique and early medieval direct tradition of Augustine’s De ciuitate Dei, with some new critical insights. It aims to provide a solid basis for future research on the topic and to fill a gap in the existing literature, by critically sifting through the information scattered in the bibliography and bringing it together into a coherent and up-to-date picture. The first part deals with a general overview of the earliest dissemination of De ciuitate Dei and its textual history in the early Middle Ages. In the second part, the complete and partial witnesses dated up to the 9th century that may be used to establish the text of De ciuitate Dei are listed. After an outline of the history of Bernhard Dombart’s edition and its revision by Alphonse Kalb, the last part deals with the little information available so far regarding the genealogical relations between the earliest copies, with a focus on Florus of Lyon’s role in the transmission of the work. Paratexts, readers’ annotations, and variant readings are discussed and mutually integrated, also in light of the recently published articles by Emanuela Colombi (2013 and 2019) and Jesse Keskiaho (2019).

Around 1109, the nine-year-old Alberic of Settefrati fell ill and experienced a vision of the aft... more Around 1109, the nine-year-old Alberic of Settefrati fell ill and experienced a vision of the afterlife while in a coma. Once recovered, he joined the Benedictine community of Montecassino. At the time of abbot Gerard (1111-1123), Guido of Montecassino wrote the first account of Alberic’s vision, which is believed to have been lost. At the time of abbot Seniorect (1127-1137), Guido’s version was revised by Alberic himself together with Peter the Deacon, as it is reported in the prefatory epistle that precedes the Visio Alberici in the only surviving witness known so far, MS. Montecassino, Biblioteca Statale del Monumento Nazionale, 257. Peter Dinzelbacher and Claude Carozzi have already pointed out how certain passages of the Visio present stylistic and structural inconsistencies must have been added to the original text at a later stage, most probably during the revision carried out by Peter and Alberic. This paper presents a hitherto unknown copy of the Visio Alberici in a manuscript compiled between the end of the 12th century and the first half of the 13th by the canons regular at Santa Cruz de Coimbra. The Visio Alberici is preserved here in a shorter form which lacks the final part of the test. The comparative analysis of the two versions through textual criticism, linguistic analysis, and sources criticism seems to confirm Dinzelbacher and Carozzi’s hypotheses, as the version transmitted by the Portuguese copy apparently predates that of the Cassinese witness and it is likely to be identified with Guido’s early account.

This article presents the first critical edition of the pseudo-Hieronymian sermon on the Nativity... more This article presents the first critical edition of the pseudo-Hieronymian sermon on the Nativity transmitted by the 12th/13th century manuscript Porto, Biblioteca Pública Municipal, Santa Cruz de Coimbra 31 (56). The quotation of its incipit by the abbot Speraindeo in a letter to Paulus Albarus reveals that the sermon circulated already in the 9th century in the Iberian Peninsula under Jerome’s name. The first part of the article provides a description of the manuscript and of its contents. The second part considers the context within which the sermon is transmitted, namely a series of ten liturgical sermons delivered on feast days from Advent to the Circumcision of Christ. The third part examines the sermon’s sources and loci paralleli and advances some hypotheses about its origin. The most plausible of these is that it is a cento combining extracts from Ambrose’s Expositio in Lucam and Chromatius’ sermon 32 on the Nativity, including several hitherto unknown passages from the Chromatian homily.

Medieval glossaries and commentaries raise peculiar philological issues, related to their origin,... more Medieval glossaries and commentaries raise peculiar philological issues, related to their origin, transmission, and textual features, that partly overlap with the ones presented by the Liber glossarum. This paper discusses specific challenges tackled by the author in the attempt to produce a critical edition of a small portion of this vast encyclopedic glossary, namely the entries drawn from Augustine’s De Genesi ad litteram. The attention is focused mostly on the emendatio phase.

Saint Theodosia of Caesarea, martyred during the Diocletianic persecution, was venerated in the B... more Saint Theodosia of Caesarea, martyred during the Diocletianic persecution, was venerated in the Byzan-tine Empire, notably in Constantinople. Eusebius of Caesarea's De martyribus Palaestinae (BHG 1775) is the source of all the Greek hagiographic accounts of her martyrium, one of which, nowadays lost, was translated in Latin between the 5 th and the 7 th century (BHL 8090). Another independent translation of the lost Greek Passio was performed in Venice in the last centuries of the Middle Ages. According to Francesco Negri's Historia Theodosiae and to the anonymous Martyrium sanctae Theosiae-an incunab-ulum printed by Antonio Zanchi in 1498-the cult of Saint Theodosia was practiced and promoted in the first half of the 15 th century in at least two Venetian churches, San Tomà, and Corpus Domini. The 'Venetian' Passio is solely witnessed by the ms. Milano, Biblioteca Braidense, Gerli 26 and it has never been printed. The aim of this paper is to publish a critical edition of the text and to understand the historical circumstances under which it was elaborated.

The paper focuses on the quotations from Augustine’s «Enarrationes in Psalmos graduum» in the «Li... more The paper focuses on the quotations from Augustine’s «Enarrationes in Psalmos graduum» in the «Liber glossarum». It aims to investigate the relation between the two works by identifying the branch of the tradition of the former text that was used by the compilers of the latter, in order to evaluate the reliability of the «Liber glossarum» as an indirect witness, through which to restore Augustine’s original text. After a brief introduction to the tradition of the «Enarrationes in Psalmos graduum» and to the working method adopted by the «Liber glossarum» compilers, a list of items drawn from Augustine’s work is given. The entries are analyzed in comparison with the text witnessed by the direct tradition: the glossary turns out to preserve an early stage of the transmission of its source, which would be otherwise lost.
