The tenth book of the Institutio oratoria by Quintilian (1st century A.D.) contains an extensive ... more The tenth book of the Institutio oratoria by Quintilian (1st century A.D.) contains an extensive review of the authors and the works that young speakers in training had to read, learn to judge, imitate and emulate. The book aims to study the theoretical assumptions and the expositive and argumentative procedures that led to compiling this list that was the first ample example of literary history in a comparative perspective between the Greek and Latin worlds. The specific theme fits in the broader context of rhetorical education in Rome during the Imperial Age. The art of speech was the cultural paradigm that profoundly and comprehensively structured the worldview of the ruling groups of that time: through the art of speech they were formed, they perceived and thought reality, and they acted in public life.
Avieno (IV sec. d.C.), nel momento del tramonto del mondo antico, propone al lettore colto della ... more Avieno (IV sec. d.C.), nel momento del tramonto del mondo antico, propone al lettore colto della sua epoca una visione ordinata della realtà celeste e terrestre attraverso la riscrittura di testi greci di ampia e consolidata fama come i componimenti didascalici di Arato e Dionisio Periegeta. Egli compie una sintesi di tutta quanta la tradizione letteraria romana e si dimostra un attento lettore e un fecondo emulatore dei classici della poesia esametrica latina. Si presenta in questo volume un’edizione critica dell’orbis terrae che aggiorna quella di P. van de Woestijne (Brugge 1961). Il testo latino è accompagnato da un’introduzione che affronta in modo originale i principali problemi testuali e interpretativi; si stampa inoltre la prima traduzione italiana dell’opera e un apparato di note contenutistiche ed esegetiche.

La mappa delle terre abitate del II sec. d.C. trova negli esametri di Dionigi il Periegeta una si... more La mappa delle terre abitate del II sec. d.C. trova negli esametri di Dionigi il Periegeta una sintesi straordinariamente intensa in cui confluiscono la migliore tradizione poetica greca, una forte attenzione ai percorsi di terra e di mare che uniscono le grandi città dell’impero romano, collaudati elenchi di popoli periferici e lontani. Il testo è stato letto alla luce delle conoscenze antiche e moderne sulla vita e l’opera del Periegeta; il curatore ha tenuto in debito conto gli importanti studi che negli ultimi due decenni hanno avuto come oggetto questo autore. Della Guida delle terre abitate si ripropone l’edizione critica pubblicata nel 1990 da Isabella Tsavari, corredata da note esplicative e da una traduzione italiana, che aggiorna e corregge quella stampata da Francesco Negri nel 1838.

Occorre un dialogo tra specializzazioni e punti di vista diversi, dalla filologia alla biologia, dalla linguistica alla fisica. I contributi di questo volume sono raccolti in due parti, una più specialistica e una più divulgativa. In entrambe è pari l’impegno a portare su Aristotele e sulla storia della sua ricezione uno sguardo originale, ma soprattutto il testo intende essere un invito alla lettura dello Stagirita, un’introduzione a uno dei pensatori più significativi della cultura occidentale.

This paper investigates the use of the preposition de with the ablative in Ennodius’ Dictiones 21... more This paper investigates the use of the preposition de with the ablative in Ennodius’ Dictiones 21-22 and compares it not only with other prose texts of the author, but also with the declamatory corpus of Ps. Quintilian, to which Ennodius explicitly refers, and, in particular, with the Major Declamation 5, of which the Dictio 21 constitutes the opposing discourse. Compared to previous studies, the analysis shows the great variability in Ennodius’ use of the nexus de with the ablative. Furthermore, it seems plausible that the Declamations of Ps. Quintilian may have influenced the high frequency of this syntagma in the declamatory texts of Ennodius, although we never find repetitions but variations and adaptations. However, the main peculiarity in its use in the Dictiones 21-22 is that it becomes one of the tools at the author’s disposal to realise his literary and stylistic ideal.

The theme of the banquet is widely present in Late Antique authors, especially for aspects relate... more The theme of the banquet is widely present in Late Antique authors, especially for aspects related to Christian preaching. Between the 5th and 6th centuries, however, there is also no lack of cases in which the motif of the traditional banquet, as a place dedicated to poetry and philosophical discussion, is united with concerns specific to Christianity. Even, the banquet becomes an identity theme, a practice to be preserved and interpreted within an intercultural horizon in which the Greco-Latin tradition enters in relation with the new dominant classes of foreign origin. In this contribution, two examples are explored, one from Gaul and one from Italy, taken respectively from the epistolary collections of Sidonius Apollinaris (epist. 9, 13) and Cassiodorus (var. 2, 40). In these texts, in spite of the profound transformations produced by Christianity, in spite of the contribution of new cultural traditions now prevailing on the European scene, the banquet continues to be a central moment not only for sociality but also for the cultural identity of the social and political elites, whether of more ancient or more recent Romanisation. The case of Ennodius is more complex and multifaceted: in his work, the banquet turns from a literary motif into an occasion for satire and parody, from a cue for religious and moral reflection into a place for cultural encounter and clash.

The contribution focuses on the epitomes to the Facta et dicta memorabilia of Valerius Maximus, a... more The contribution focuses on the epitomes to the Facta et dicta memorabilia of Valerius Maximus, an author of Tiberian age who was himself a selector and epitomator of previous literary works. The two epitomes date back to the Late Antiquity: the epitome of Iulius Paris is complete, whereas the epitome of Ianuarius Nepotianus is interrupted at the beginning of Valerius Maximus’ third book (3, 2, 7). The paper analyses the dedicatory letters of the two epitomes to bring out the methodological principles that guided the authors. Then, a case study is presented to explain the textual strategies that led from the source text (a passage by Livy) to its rewrites, first in Valerius Maximus, then in Iulius Paris and Nepotianus. Finally, to get even better into the epitomator’s workshop, some observations are made on the anecdotes that Nepotianus added to the works of Valerius Maximus.

After some general considerations, I focus on the comparison between the Roman writer and his Greek predecessor, Dionysius of Halicarnassus, about the construction of a shared literary memory in order thereby to identify what are the motivations and the discursive strategies Quintilian uses in the devel- opment of this dynamic process between memory and oblivion.

The concept of ἕξις is the starting point for the tenth book of Quintilian’s Institutio oratoria... more The concept of ἕξις is the starting point for the tenth book of Quintilian’s Institutio oratoria. This concept had its origins in the philosophical field in the works by Plato and Aristotle but was also used by many other Greek and Latin authors. In my paper, I analyse some crucial moments in the history of this term in Greek and study its Latin translations (habitus, facultas, facilitas). In particular, my focus is on its use in the rhetorical field from Cicero to Tacitus, with specific attention to Quintilian, and on its meaning of facility of expression.

The aggregate of Republican oratorical material in Quintilian is shown to be highly heterogeneous, and Quintilian's immanent authorial concerns emerge as an important factor in the patterns of citation observable in his work. Quintilian is argued to have known much of the Republican oratory he cites at first hand, and thus, rather than recycle judgements or passages from his predecessors, was fully equipped to make a personal intervention in the critical traditions concerned with Republican oratory".
