Some features of the model are drawn from the previ-ous literature: the crowding out of intrinsic ...

In particular we test the hypothesis that empathy modulates the anticipatory effect of guilt in bargaining situations and, more specifically, that it correlates with subjects’ willingness to give and to repay trust in an investment game. In doing this, economic science has followed faithfully the western civilization that, since ancient Greek, has considered children not citizens or agents.

Il vantaggio è duplice, tattico e strategico: non solo sviare, non essere identificati come responsabili ed obiettivi da colpire, ma indebolire ulteriormente le democrazie.

First, we highlight how some of the limitations of the classical theory of 7 games can hinder a deeper understanding of two fundamental dimensions of 8 the interpersonal relations, which are essential to our social epistemology: the 9 mentalizing and empathizing processes. Secondly, we present the results of a 10 series of experiments that stress the role of these two elements in the realm 11 of strategic interactions. Finally, we argue that, by conceptualizing a hierar-12 chy of higher order beliefs, psychological game theory seems to constitute a 13 promising step forward towards the introduction of relational elements in the 14 motivational structure of social agents.

In particular we test the hypothesis that empathy modulates the anticipatory effect of guilt in bargaining situations and, more specifically, that it correlates with subjects' willingness to give and to repay trust in an investment game. We also control for the effect of individual risk attitude. Our main results show that empathy significantly influences players' pattern of restitution in the investment game and that risk-propensity weakly affects the decision to trust; we also find a significant gender difference in the distribution of empathy.

Contractual market exchanges and long-run interactions are both situations based on selfinterested reciprocal behaviour. However, reciprocity is not only a behaviour but also a motive that sometimes appears to be inconsistent with self-interest. This fact produces a tension between those who try to explain reciprocal behaviour within the standard framework and those who aim at enlarging it with the introduction of additional behavioural principles. This special issue collects a selection of papers presented at the International Conference ''Reciprocity. Theory and facts'' were the two perspectives were compared and discussed. In this Introduction note we provide first a broad view of the role of reciprocity in economics and then a quick introduction to each of the contributions enclosed in this special issue.
