L'ampio volume in lingua inglese, curato da Silvia Kunitz, Numa Markee e Olcay Sert-figure di ril... more L'ampio volume in lingua inglese, curato da Silvia Kunitz, Numa Markee e Olcay Sert-figure di rilievo nella ricerca glottodidattica ispirata all'analisi conversazionale (AC)offre un'imponente panoramica di studi che utilizzano gli strumenti dell'AC per esaminare insegnamento e apprendimento delle lingue nel contesto della classe di LS/L2 (CA Research in L2 Classrooms) e in ambito CLIL (CA Research in Content Based Language Classroom), come pure per sondare le possibilità applicative dell'approccio conversazionale nella formazione dei docenti (CA Research and Teacher Education) e in ambito valutativo (CA and Assessment). Le lingue (inglese LS o L2 in Svezia, Finlandia, Spagna, Turchia, Corea del Sud, Lussemburgo e Stati Uniti, come pure lo svedese L2 in Svezia e l'italiano LS in Nordamerica) e i contesti educativi coinvolti (scuola primaria e secondaria, università, formazione iniziale e continua dei docenti) caratterizzano il taglio internazionale e di ampio respiro dell'opera, articolata in cinque parti-sono complessivamente 16 i saggi qui raccolti-e contestualizzata da un'estesa sezione introduttiva. Il volume si rivolge a studiosi, ma ancor più a docenti e futuri docenti, come pure a formatori, esperti di testing e di curricoli, con l'intento dichiarato di gettare un ponte tra ricerca di base da un lato e ricerca applicata, ricerca-azione e prassi didattica dall'altro, e dunque tra ambiti spesso ancora troppo lontani per prospettive, problematiche e finalità, ma tra i quali proprio per questo risulta sempre più indispensabile instaurare un solido dialogo. In linea con tale obiettivo, le autrici e gli autori di tutti i lavori qui presentati declinano le proprie indagini-tipicamente basate sull'analisi di dati interazionali-anche in chiave applicativa, fornendo di volta in volta indicazioni concrete per la prassi didattica, per la formazione degli insegnanti o per il testing: un'impostazione, questa, fortemente voluta da Kunitz, Markee e Sert, e che si configura come uno dei punti di forza a dell'intera opera.

The paper explores some uses of the Italian expressions bene, va bene and benissimo in institutio... more The paper explores some uses of the Italian expressions bene, va bene and benissimo in institutional talk. Drawing on audio-and videorecorded data from classroom interaction, radio interviews and research interviews, and with the methods of interactional linguistics and conversation analysis, I examine how speakers use bene, va bene and benissimo as resources to organize and structure interaction. In particular, I show how they can be used by teachers and lecturers, radio hosts and researchers-i.e., by participants who take up the institutionally defined and interactionally ratified role of chairing and managing the encounter-1) as ways of closing down question-answer sequences, and thereby as a pre-closing of the whole interaction; 2) at transitions between different kinds of activities involving changes in the participation framework; 3) or at transitions from one topic to the next. I then discuss how these resources, rather than initiating or achieving pre-closings and transitions on their own, are mobilized together with further linguistic-as for instance alloraand/or embodied resources, thus highlighting the relevance of a multimodal perspective for the analysis of face-to-face encounters.

Linguistic research on academic communication in pedagogical settings, traditionally focussing on... more Linguistic research on academic communication in pedagogical settings, traditionally focussing on the characteristics of teacher talk (Flowerdew 1994, Hornero/Luzón/Murillo 2006 and other studies originated from the MICASE and BASE corpora1), has only recently started to examine how non-verbal resources are made relevant in such settings (see Roth/Lawless 2002, Crawford Camiciottoli 2004, Veronesi 2007). Furthermore, while CA-oriented investigations on pedagogical events like seminars and tutorials have not failed to examine how all participants coordinate with each other in the unfolding interaction (Anderson/Piazza 2005, Waring 2002, among others), the analysis of academic lectures has been mainly concerned with monologic talk on the one hand, and students’ lecture comprehension on the other, studied by means of interviews and written protocols (see Jung 2006). Taking its departure point from an overview of existing studies on academic discourse, the paper ... more Taking its departure point from an overview of existing studies on academic discourse, the paper discusses some results of an ongoing research focussing on lectures in a multiligual setting. The analysis, based on a corpus videorecorded at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano, examines a number of discursive and linguistic phenomena characterizing lecturers’ monologic talk, considered for their possible role in supporting comprehension and in shaping the relationship with students. The use of one or more languages within lectures is also observed and commented upon, while final considerations are devoted to research perspectives for the study of lectures as dialogic and multimodal face-to-face communicative events.

"Recent research on language biographies, as collected by means of narrative int... more "Recent research on language biographies, as collected by means of narrative interviews, has shown the usefulness of a discursive, qualitative approach when studying bi- and multilingualism, in that it provides insights on how individual speakers experience and view languages and discursively construct their identity. Taking such studies as a point of departure, the paper explores the language biographies of eight speakers living in South Tyrol, Italy, and investigates the ways they represent their linguistic repertoire (first language, second language, language varieties), and bilingualism: its definition as well as values, advantages and drawbacks that are attributed to it. Particular attention is thereby devoted to similarities and differences in the discourse of (self-defined) “bilingual” and “non-bilingual” speakers, so as to capture the peculiarities of individual life trajectories but also what may be common in the experience of growing up with one or two languages, as well as in the ways speakers define their own linguistic and cultural identity."

Based on a research project on intercultural communication in the plurilingual area of South Tyro... more Based on a research project on intercultural communication in the plurilingual area of South Tyrol-Alto Adige, Italy, the paper focusses on the micro-analysis of verbal interactions in linguistically 'mixed' groups, with speakers who are either South Tyroleans of Italian and German mother-tongue or come from different regions of Italy and other countries. After a brief description of the socio-political and linguistic situation of South Tyrot where the the German-speaking community is protected as linguistic minority, examples taken from different settings, ranging from professional, educational and political contexts, are examined, in order to see how the official goal of Italian-German bilingualism is reflected in real communicative exchanges, how language choice and language alternation can fulfil communicative purposes and how limited competences in the second or foreign language can be exploited in intercultural communication.

Reshaping Teacher-Student Interaction in the Virtual Classroom: a Case Study
This paper presents an exploratory examination of video-mediated classroom interaction in School ... more This paper presents an exploratory examination of video-mediated classroom interaction in School and University settings, a modality of teaching and learning which has recently experienced a rapid growth as a consequence of the COVID-19 emergency. Based on a corpus of audio and video recorded virtual classes, we analyze how instructors and students cope with the challenges of not being physically co-present and lacking direct visual contact in the virtual enviroment, and discuss how fundamental mechanisms of face-to-face classroom interaction –participants’ mutual orientation in the opening phase, speakers’ identification and recognition, as well as instructors’ actions like comprehension checks, solicitations for ques-tions/comments, questions and evaluations– are partially modified in the virtual environment, making it more complex, for instructors, to enhance students’ active participation. Final considerations are devoted to the possible implications of these preliminary findings.
