Les textes ici rassemblés proposent d’apporter de nouveaux matériaux à l’appui de l’interprétatio... more Les textes ici rassemblés proposent d’apporter de nouveaux matériaux à l’appui de l’interprétation de l’Histoire naturelle de Pline l’Ancien, texte primordial pour la compréhension du Principat romain. De fait, cette « encyclopédie » peut être considérée comme un véritable inventaire du monde romain autour du Ier siècle p.C. Dans son travail de compilation savante et avisée, Pline ne s’est pas limité à la collation d’informations tirées des auteurs romains et « étrangers » (en fait, des Grecs) ; il a régulièrement mis en valeur les premiers, afin de s’affranchir du poids des autorités grecques et de présenter le monde vu par un Romain, en donnant la priorité à la dimension géographique : de l’Afrique du nord au Caucase et à l’Iran, en passant par la Grèce, l’Asie mineure et l’Égypte. Sans négliger, bien entendu, Rome ni l’Italie.

J.-C. Ces territoires présentent le point commun de ne pas appartenir à l’aire culturelle grecque et d’abriter des populations aux origines et cultures diverses. L’étude des sociétés préexistantes à la conquête macédonienne apporte un élément majeur de compréhension du fonctionnement des nouveaux pouvoirs, de leur structuration et de l’administration qu’ils vont générer ainsi que des transferts culturels entre communautés. Les sources correspondant au domaine de spécialité de
chacun des auteurs et le débat historiographique qu’elles suscitent sont ainsi au coeur de ce manuel. Après un tableau chronologique, sont abordées les questions de l’administration des territoires, de leur économie, du rôle des sanctuaires comme communautés locales et des aspects culturels.

• Omar Coloru est chercheur post-doctoral, spécialiste des relations entre les mondes gréco-romain et iranien.

In Book XV of Strabo’s Geographiká the description of the northwestern sector of India, now corre... more In Book XV of Strabo’s Geographiká the description of the northwestern sector of India, now corresponding to the region along the modern Afghan-Pakistani border, presents some ambiguous features that are due to several factors. The Eratosthenian subdivision adopted by the geographer fails to understand the geomorphological and ethnic specificities of the area in question. On the other hand, the complexity of the hydrographic system and the conflicting geographical data transmitted by the Alexandrographers imply that the description of the territory cannot always be translated into simple geometric representation. Strabo’s decision to reject the element of ‘marvelous’ as being considered a fabrication of the Alexandrographers
must also be taken into consideration

The purpose of this paper is to illustrate how, in his military operations, the Seleucid ruler An... more The purpose of this paper is to illustrate how, in his military operations, the Seleucid ruler Antiochos III did not always resort to armed confrontation with his opponents. On the contrary, he was able to deploy “soft power” strategies through the use of diplomacy, stratagems and the use of intelligence. The paper focuses on the ruler’s anabasis in the Upper Satrapies and the phases immediately preceding the outbreak of the war against Rome. Antiochos ultimately manages at the same time to remain true to the image of the warrior ruler according to the dictates of Hellenistic kingship and to develop refined techniques of conflict management at a distance.

The present contribution will focus on a few case studies from the Archaic and Classical periods ... more The present contribution will focus on a few case studies from the Archaic and Classical periods (the seer Mopsos, Alcaeus and his brother Antimenidas, the Greek mercenaries in Egypt, Aristagoras of Miletus, and the hero Memnon) in order to investigate the way according to which the Greeks perceived and defined the boundaries of some Near Eastern imperial formations, i.e. Assyria, Babylon, Egypt, and Persia. The analysis aims to understand how different factors such as imperial ideology, geographical knowledge, and personal experience contributed to shaping Greek views on the imperial space.

As the author states at the beginning of his work (1,3), the journeys and deeds of Apollonios were recorded by a man of Nineveh named Damis, who had become the pupil of the miracle worker and accompanied him in his peregrinations. Leaving aside the long-debated question of the authenticity of Damis’ account the present paper focuses on the itinerary of Apollonios in order to detect elements of common sense geography.

The article presents an overview of the archaeological data (updated to 2021) from the recent exc... more The article presents an overview of the archaeological data (updated to 2021) from the recent excavations at Barikot, Swat (Pakistan), and preliminary results from ongoing studies of the other archaeological evidence related to the post‑Indo‑Greek phases in Swat and Gandhara (ca. 50 BC–50 AD). The article introduces some of the most distinctive markers of material culture in this context, as well as the evidence of new fortifications and building activity both in urban centres and Buddhist sanctuaries. The data collected thus far underpin a new interpretation of this little‑known historical phase of ancient northwestern India. The phase is characterized by a building program and political vibrancy, which do not correspond with the model of an economic recession advanced by scholars thus far. Indeed, in this framework, the so‑called ‘Great Debasement’ attributed to Azes II, might have had alternative implications.
