Jain pilgrimages are an important event of communal identity since the Jains, an Indian merchant caste, do not have a territory of their own. The annual pilgrimage, for the most part on foot, assembles hundreds or even thousands of pilgrims who are prepared to confront bodily pain, hunger and thirst in order to celebrate the founders of their religion. After having walked on foot for days through the sparsely populated countryside pilgrims head for the Shatrunjaya mountains with Ȋȉȑ temples and about Ȋȉȉȉ smaller shrines. This temple complex is conceived of as one of the few places of eternity within a vast and constantly changing universe. The article will discuss the composition, organisation and ritual performances during the pilgrimage, its underlying conception of the universe and the constant re-affirmation of Jain identity through the veneration of their ancestral spiritual founders.

The aim of the volume is a comparative study of non-European pilgrimages under different historical conditions and changing power relations. Historic transformations but also continuities in organization, bodily and spiritual experience, as well as individual and collective motives are discussed. Written by an interdisciplinary group of authors, their various disciplinary perspectives offer insight into the differences in methods, theoretical reflections and the use and meanings of objects in ritual performances. The construction of sacred spaces as landscapes of imagination reflects a wide range of meaning in regard of the growing complexity and social dynamism in times of postmodernity.

This article investigates the application of a repertoire of terms used by both Austrian imperial and Istrian-Triestine scientists to categorise forms of cultural diversity
and hybridity on the Istrian peninsula. The study spans most of the 19th century (mostly
from the 1840s and the First World War), when such a range of categorising terms was
established in scientific works in Istria, Trieste/Trst/Triest and the whole Habsburg
Monarchy. The development and use of these terms formed the foundations for the
process of building a new regional order on the Upper-Adriatic coast (Istria) within the
general re-ordering of the Habsburg Empire.

The development of Italian language anti-Slavic propaganda in Trieste was a multifaceted process, arising from a variety of economic, social and political factors – both internal and external. Anti-Slavism was the result of several tendencies of the Italian-speaking middle class and intellectuals in the north-eastern Adriatic area (Littoral and Dalmatia). Anti-Slavic propaganda represented only minimally a clear pro-Italian/pre-irredentist agenda, as it did with some nationalist ideologists. The change of opinion towards Anti-Slavism of some Italian-speaking intellectuals in the Adriatic area in the wake of the revolution of March 1848 revealed, on the one hand, the coming about of new general conditions in the 1850s/1860s; on the other hand, the works of these authors before and after the revolution contain a common thread concerning their opinions about the Slavic peoples. The aim of this essay is to understand the development of the public health system within the Austrian Empire
between 1849 and the end of the 1880s. After a contextualisation of the legal and administrative rules of Austrian
citizenship and the welfare organisation system, the text provides some examples from documents in the archival
collection of the Littoral’s Lieutenancy. The essay focuses on the problematic relationship between the new laws for
inclusion in Austrian citizenship and the right of indigent persons to be cared for. Health, legal, bureaucratic and
socio-economic factors were so intertwined that they form a complicated Gordian knot.
