Cultural Anthropology

This article deals with increasing rents and their effects on middle-class inhabitants of cities. Munich, the capital of the German housing market crisis, serves as an example for developments which can also be observed in many other agglomeration areas. The focus of the research presented here is on practices which aim at access to housing space and, consequently, are linked with representations which repeatedly take recourse to imaginations of a good life. The home plays a central role in the lifeworlds of not only individuals, groups and communities, but also societies which, in turn, form themselves as social structures. Individual living is always to be understood as a piece of a widely cast net and is connected primarily to the living of others, is integrated into policies, and dense urban housing particularly is always connected with questions about capital and habitus, about the design of the collective, about belonging, and the negotiation of difference and indifference. Social differences must be considered to arrive at sustainable solutions to the issue of the housing problem and the discussion around participation, however, at the same time, one needs to think beyond classes.

Simone Egger ‚Volkskultur' in der spätmodernen Welt ‚Das Bayerische' als ethnokulturelles Dispositiv Abstract: Folk Culture in a Postmodern World. 'The Bavarian' as an Ethnocultural Dispositive. Since the year 2000, dealing with 'the Bavarian' has become more popular than ever before. While the world is connected via businesses, family relations and digital networks and separated because of wars and conflicts at the same time, ethnocultural coded objects and practices supposed to be typical, local or traditional attract global attention. 'Folk culture' seems to hit the aesthetics of the 21st century. With Michel Foucault 'the Bavarian' may be understood as a dispositive consisting of institutions, people, relations and even breaks. 'The Bavarian'-whatever that means-is not and has never been static. Furthermore 'the Bavarian' functions as a kind of cloud. Conceived as a process its various meanings are permanently negotiated by everyone feeling called to comment on this matter. During the last 15 years more and more people from all over the world have arrived in Bavaria and the metropolitan region of its capital Munich for private or professional reasons, as refugees or high skilled migrants. The effect is an increasing diversity of society in the cities as well as in less urbanized parts of the country. In a postmodern sense, practices, materials, symbols and performances imagined as characteristic components of 'the Bavarian' are to be considered as possibilities of participation.

Aspasia Schönwald from Smyrna and the spaces of a transnational biography Abstract: On the basis of a historical stock of letters the project presented in this article is concerned with a dual biography: of a woman and of a city. In particular, it focusses on the lifeworld of Aspasia Schoenwald, who was born in 1891 in Ottoman Smyrna. Her story is unthinkable without the Levantine city on the Mediterranean Sea and its cosmopolitan lifestyle. The source material mainly dates back to the 1910s. By finding constellations and horizons of meaning from the perspective of a historical cultural analysis a widely interconnected, transnational past can be made visible on the example of this dual biography. In her letters and parcels to Wilhelm Boeck in Munich Aspa creates a Third Space (Soja 1996), where actors, lifestyles, practices and ideas are connected across geopolitical and social boundaries. This cosmopolitan space of communication, which was even maintained during the Great War, points to links and aspects in this transnational space that are not remembered in the present. And yet, it is these historical relations that are indicative of contacts, shared knowledge and translations and that may have implications for thinking in a new way about the future of Europe.

Um das Globale im Lokalen fassen zu können, schlägt der französische Soziologe Bruno Latour einen fundamentalen Perspektivwechsel vor-weil dieser Zugriff aus seiner Sicht so nicht funktioniert. Die etablierte Vorgehensweise, "lokalen Interaktionen" nachzuspüren und dabei "globale Kontexte" aufzumachen, führt zum einen analytisch ins Leere und trägt zum anderen auch nicht dazu bei, das Lokale in irgendeiner Weise zu fassen, wie der Soziologe meint.

Die Lebenswelt des Dorfes ist, entgegen gängiger städtischer Imaginationen, die das Landleben zuallererst idealisieren und darüber besonders immobil und statisch erscheinen lassen, kontinuierlich von Bewegungen geprägt – von Mobilitäten, von Wandel, von Veränderungen in variierenden Intervallen. Ebenso vielfältig wie die Entwicklungen in ländlichen Regionen sind die Fragestellungen, die sich daran aus kulturwissenschaftlicher Sicht knüpfen lassen.

Das gute Leben und der Immobilienmarkt

Grenfell Tower: 80 Menschen sind am 14. Juni 2017 bei einem verheerenden Brand im Londoner Stadtteil North Kensington ums Leben gekommen. Durch einen Kurzschluss, den ein defekter Kühlschrank in einer Wohnung im vierten Stock ausgelöst hat, entzündete sich ein Feuer, und die Flammen konnten sich wahrscheinlich über die wenige Monate zuvor angebrachte Wärmedämmung in rasender Geschwindigkeit über die 24 Geschosse des Hauses ausbreiten. 151 Wohnungen wurden zerstört, in der Umgebung sind viele Appartements aufgrund von Rauch, Löschwasser und Asche unbewohnbar geworden.

Der Beitrag beschäftigt sich mit der Inszenierung lokaler Bilder im Zusammenhang mit einer Internationalisierung der Kommunalpolitik im München der 1960er und 70er Jahre. Das Dirndl wurde im Zuge der Sommerspiele der XX. Olympiade 1972 weltweit zum Symbol für Stadt und Region und hat damit ebenso als Piktogramm funktioniert wie die von Otl Aicher entworfenen ohne spezifische Sprachkenntnisse zu verstehenden Zeichen.

Städte prägen sich uns gestalthaft ein", gibt der Sozialpsychologe Alexander Mitscherlich Mitte der 1960er Jahre zu bedenken, "[…] aber auch gleichsam in ihrer Anatomie. Wo immer wir uns durch die Gassen von Paris bewegen, wir behalten ein Gefühl für das Ganze dieses Körpers, für seine Topographie. Wien, das alte Köln, Gent, sind mehr als die Summe der Straßen und Häuser. Wie sehr eine Stadt ein lebender Organismus ist, ein Antlitz hat, erfährt man im sinnlos gespaltenen Berlin; an jeder Stelle in Ost und West fühlt man die schwere Krankheit, welche die Stadt wie in fiebrigem Schlaf hält, in einer müden Agonie, über die keine Betriebsamkeit täuschen kann. Stadt ist-gelungen oder mißlungen, kultiviert oder trübsinnig-Gruppenausdruck und Ausdruck der Geschichte von Gruppen, ihrer Machtentfaltung und Untergänge; ein unsichtbares, aber ein sehr wirksames Band verknüpft Einstellungen, Mentalität, Beweglichkeit, Traditionalismus der in einer Stadt lebenden Geschlechterfolge. Ein Stilgefühl besonderer Art ist der ‚Stadtgeist'. Neigung und Abneigung gegenüber dieser ‚Gestalt' einer Stadt bilden sich auf eine so komplexe Weise, daß das ABC der Ästhetik sie nicht erklären kann, und auch unsere Psychologie ist noch viel zu schwerfällig dazu. Da gibt es etwa imposante Stadtareale, die man gesehen haben muß, nach denen es einen aber später nicht mehr zurückzieht. Und dann wieder sind es volkreiche oder stille Straßen und Plätze, zu denen wir zurückkehren mit dem tiefen Glücksgefühl des Land-oder Meerfahrers, der nach Hause kommt. Es spielen sich also Neigungs-bzw. Abneigungsbegegnungen ab, die, wie die Begegnungen der Menschen untereinander, Glückliches oder Unglückliches verheißen. Wie weit das Cachet der Städte, das sie so anziehend oder abstoßend (für den Fremden) macht […], wie weit diese ganze eigentümliche Lebensluft bestimmend in die Biographie der Bürger hineinwirkt, wissen wir keineswegs. Wahrscheinlich wirkt sie sehr tief" (Mitscherlich 1970: 32 f., Hervorhebung im Original).

The paper focusses on the relation between references to an 'average' and urban developments of crowding or increases in rents. The occurrence of normative orientations towards an 'average' in diverse fields -such as debates on work-life balance and medium achievements in the workplace or goals to keep up with average performances in leisure sport -serves as a starting point to investigate the role of the 'average' in urban housing. Based on qualitative interviews, discourse analysis and fieldwork in the Rathenauviertel and other districts in Cologne, it asks how ideas of an 'average' feature discursively in urban housing and how they are connected to other fields. The paper starts by outlining the prevalence of orientations towards the middle in different fields and specifically in the realm of housing. It proceeds by highlighting how notions of the middle are conveyed in advertisements, how they are tied to normative presuppositions and what impact they have on esthetics and materializations. The paper shows how perceptions of public space change with shifts in urban housing and conditions of appropriateness are adjusted. It concludes by arguing that orientations towards the middle in urban housing can be understood as an interplay between external pressures, normative orientations and justifications.
