Yet, compered to the architecture of the same period of other countries of Yugoslavia, it remains a 'grey area'. It is less analysed and documented compared with the Byzantine and Islamic Architecture, whose conquest counts a significant influence on building urban and architectonic identity of the country. Modernism in Kosovo came in the name of prosperity and progress. But this meant that a number of traditional buildings and old city cores were erased following the maxim 'destroy the old, place the new', to make place for new modernist structures. Major cities of Kosovo witnessed major transformations. Also, these transformations were not led by the local authorities, but were mostly imposed from outside. Consequently, for many reasons, modernist architecture has enjoyed a negative reputation in Kosovo as being foreign and imposed. As a result of this negative reputation,as well as other significant factors-such as political and social changes after '99s war in Kosovo, mostly connected with the process of privatization-the second urban and architectural destruction in Kosovo started in the beginning of the 21st century. This time not the destruction of the traditional structures, but of the modernist heritage. With the evaluation of certain examples of material production of Kosovo modernism, using the comprehension methodology of the initial and the current state, this paper intends to bringlight to the journey of the modernist architecture of Kosovo, its construction and deconstruction phases and the reasons after the neglected appreciation of its values. It aims to show the hidden values of Kosovo modernist architecture and the urge for its valuation, documentation and preservation. josha.org

Various agendas have been pursued and diff erent approaches and solutions produced,1 each depending on the vision of prosperity that countries worldwide embraced in the aftermath of the Second World War. It is also recognized that modernist architecture emerged under very diff erent regimes and conditions which, as Heuvel notes, were “sometimes not quite as progressive as propagated” and were “indeed at times outright repressive”.2 In socialist Yugoslavia,3 modernist architecture and urbanism were critical in the construction of socialism and as means for diff erentiating new developments from the capitalist form of urbanization. Negative references to unresolved contradictions between the individual and society, the city and the villages, urban centres and their peripheries – which Yugoslav urbanists of the time...

Energy Efficiency Assessment of University Buildings - Case Study: Technical Faculties Building

The aim of our research described in this paper is to investigate and evaluate several aspects of energy efficiency, such as source and use of energy and its loss in education buildings, when it comes to lighting and heating of the building during the learning process; as well as medium-term strategies for alternative energy sources for these items. The key issue in this study is based on analysis and assessment of enclosed architectural space and its constructive elements, electrical and heating installations of the case study building, the Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Faculty of Civil Engineering and Architecture and Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, so-called Technical Faculties Building (TFB). This paper is based on comparing the analysis fro...

Actually, general hospitals in Peja, Gjakova, Prizren, Mitrovica, Ferizaj, Vushtri and Gjilan are identified as regional. University clinical centre of Kosovo belong to the tertiary care, but due to high flux of patients, it is acting as a general hospital too. Above mentioned hospitals were subject of this study. Since there is no proper evidence of systemized data regarding regional hospitals in Kosovo, this study attempts to perform a research on various aspects on this topic. In addition, to classify these hospitals, among others, regarding their construction period, typology, architecturally recognizable structure, spatial organization, by creating a proper data base which will enable serious analyses to be carried out. In this sense, initially all available information about relevant par...

To recover such a state, emergency interventions from many international organizations besides reconstruction of residential buildings being the priority of the programs were mainly focused in the improvement of the primary school buildings' infrastructure, as it was an important factor to return residents in their settlements. The purpose of this study is to analyze the process of emergency design and construction of primary schools in the postwar period in Kosovo, from 1999 and afterward, also to investigate the impact of the used standards on the reforming of the educational system. The study was performed on following case studies: primary schools "Idriz Ajeti"-Shalë (Lipjan), "Ramiz Sadiku"-Gllarevë (Klinë), Abri e Epërme in Glogovac, "Kongresi i Manastirit"-Studençan (Suharekë). Outcomes have shown that postwar Kosovo design standards, used for the design and emergency construction of primary schools, have contributed to the easy and informal transition from traditional school to new school architecture and were suitable for application of new teaching methods. josha.org

Analyzes of spatial planning documents and legislation of Kosova and Albania, toward approaching New Urban Agenda, as benchmarking to sustainable development, its strategic objectives, priorities, modalities is of importance. Kosovo and Albanian cities are facing rapid urbanization due to several developmental and transitional reasons, migration, economic development challenges, initially regulated by spatial planning legislation followed by spatial planning documents. Global trends says that one third of the global population will live in cities by 2050 (UN, 2014), in Albania over two third of population will live in cities after 2035 (UN, World Urbanization Prospects, 2009 Revision).

It explores the changing image of the city through interpreting the temporal and spatial forms of urban and architectural contributions that occurred between late 1940s and 1980s. Our analysis classifies six types of such contribution, comparable to Hamilton’s model of the socialist city, which prove that the intentions of the modernist socialist urbanism and architecture in Prishtina were similar to other socialist cities. However, the political and cultural background of Prishtina was different from other ex-Yugoslavian cities, and we try to show what impact it had in the shaping of its urban and socialist features. Analysis identified two major undertakings to support this argument: firstly, the destruction of traditional architecture with high symbolic value, with intention to erase the cultural construct of the city through, allegedly, the liquidation of primitive culture and the backwardness of the city; and secondly, and the fragmentary nature of urban development which made sure that such backwardness would frame the urban identity of the city in the modern context.

It represents the difficulties of the transfor-mation process, which can be identified in cities all over the Balkans as well as in other parts of the world.
