This book offers the first synthesis of the current state of research. It begins by presenting the relevant theories and develops a typology suitable for the era, distinguishing between voluntary and forced, individual and mass, privately and publicly directed changes of location. In a third step, meaningful examples provide a panorama of ancient migration history from the early Greeks to the Migration Period.

The knowledge they contain reflects the various needs for information of people who were at the crossroads of classical education and Christianity. The “ancient Romans” were still important for Christian identity. This study on the culture of history provides a detailed evaluation of breviaries and their reception from the points of view of social and intellectual history.

One of the main aims of epitomes was to provide new men in politics and administration with necessary basic knowledge of Roman history; sometimes epitomes were also 'misused' by Christian authors for apologetic aims. As such, they had quite a broad, heterogeneous public. Renaissance epitomes (presented here in a selection from 15th-century Italy) didn't serve any particular political goals. They were written by humanists for learned readers who were often looking for intellectual entertainment-as opposed to the practical and easy-to-read epitomes of late antiquity, which were aimed at inerudite readers. The change in media from manuscripts to printed books increased the impact and circulation of late antique epitomes, but did not have the same positive effect for Renaissance epitomes.

More interesting than the typology of deportations is the comparison of the different cultures of deportation - here shown within the Roman empire and different Russian empires.

The paper tries to apply two methods to explain the emergence of the state: The collective action theory by Mancur Olson and the comparative approach by Blanton/ Fargher.

Consequently, going down before the emperor's knees in ruler cult is disliked. Emperor and Plebs communicated in a lot of gestures , but proskynesis of Roman citizens was unwelcome. When emperor and plebs met, different greetings, gestures and airs became performative acts of the Roman empire. Christian reception of these acts is to be supposed – quite concrete in the form of games, bloody sacrifices and idololatry. From the polytheistic point of view, these rituals demonstrated loyalty to the imperial dynasty – the political influence of the plebs was diminished since the end of the republic. New forms of participation arose.

Digital image processing was still in its infancy. Scanners were to be found in centres for computing, digital cameras were expensive. Nowadays (2014) it is much easier to digitize even with smartphone or tablet. But I think that some remarks on the specific problems of scanning coins are relevant also nowadays. One of my examples is work of the Augustan age -this should be interesting in the 2000 th year of Augustus' death. I have to thank Richard Riggs (now Erwin, TN) for reading the text and Helmut Schubert (Frankfurt) for the images of coins.

The article observes the development of the genre from M. Fulvius Nobilior, Hemina, Piso, Tuditanus and Gracchanus to Varro and L. Iulius Caesar. Some aspects are mythology, rituals, divination and connections to politics. In the third quarter of the 1st Century BC a lot of fragments from antiquary works survived and show that this genre existed before Varro.

Palombi suggested that the well-known columna rostrata of BC 36 was augmented by three new columns, which would be quite astonishing since the earlier column remembered explicitly civil war.
In my mind, the coin RIC I² Aug. Nr. 266. presents
the four columns with an architrave in front of the Curia Iulia. Such an innovative type of monument fits into the Augustan urban transformations.

More than the half of Handels Operas has ancient themes -historical and mythological. But the influence of the ancient sources on the libretti was quite different: Opera has never intended to narrate ancient or medieval history. It was legitimate to invent a story that had only the starting point in Virgil, Plutarch or Tacitus. The following operas are in the focus of interest: Wolfgang A. Mozart: Ascanio in Alba (1771) George Frederic Handel: Giulio Cesare in Egitto (1724) Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber: Arminio (1690/92) George Frederic Handel: Arminio The libretti for the Arminius-Operas used ancient sources as well as recent literary works. Drama and Happy End were more important than historicity. * Diese Ausarbeitung geht auf einen Vortrag zurück, den ich im Wintersemester 2002/3 an der Universität Rostock gehalten habe.
