Open Source Cloud Computing: Characteristics and an Overview

In an attempt to reduce costs by taking advantage of efficient computing resources, new developed... more In an attempt to reduce costs by taking advantage of efficient computing resources, new developed technologies and architectures are gaining wide acceptance in the market. One of such technologies is cloud computing, which uses existing technologies, such as virtualization, trying to solve problems like energy consumption and space allocation in data centers or large companies. This paper presents a study on cloud computing, describing their main characteristics, models of deployment, services, and architectures, including an analysis over its benefits, risks and challenges. It also presents a study over some open-source cloud managers, presenting its advantages and drawbacks. All of this is presented aiming to provide a clear guide for those that are evaluating the possible adoption of cloud technology for their IT problems.

Increased accessibility to high-performance computing resources has created a demand for user sup... more Increased accessibility to high-performance computing resources has created a demand for user support through performance evaluation tools like the iSPD (iconic Simulator for Parallel and Distributed systems), a simulator based on iconic modelling for distributed environments such as computer grids. It was developed to make it easier for general users to create their grid models, including allocation and scheduling algorithms. This paper describes how schedulers are managed by iSPD and how users can easily adopt the scheduling policy that improves the system being simulated. A thorough description of iSPD is given, detailing its scheduler manager. Some comparisons between iSPD and Simgrid simulations, including runs of the simulated environment in a real cluster, are also presented.

Reconfigurable computing is one of the most recent research topics in computer science. The Alter... more Reconfigurable computing is one of the most recent research topics in computer science. The Altera™ Nios II soft-core processor can be included in a large set of reconfigurable architectures, especially because it is designed in software, allowing it to be configured according to the application. The recent growth in applications that demand reconfigurable computing made necessary the building of compilers that translate high level languages source codes into reconfigurable devices instruction sets. In this paper we present a compiler that takes as input the bytecodes generated by a Java front-end compiler and generates a set of instructions that attends to the Nios II processor instruction set rules. Our work shows how we process Java bytecodes to the intermediate code, in the Nios II instructions format, and build the control flow and the control dependence graphs.

In this article we explore the NVIDIA graphical processing units (GPU) computational power in cry... more In this article we explore the NVIDIA graphical processing units (GPU) computational power in cryptography using CUDA (Compute Unified Device Architecture) technology. CUDA makes the general purpose computing easy using the parallel processing presents in GPUs. To do this, the NVIDIA GPUs architectures and CUDA are presented, besides cryptography concepts. Furthermore, we do the comparison between the versions executed in CPU with the parallel version of the cryptography algorithms Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) and Message-digest Algorithm 5 (MD5) wrote in CUDA. Keywords-GPU; cryptography; parallel algorithms; CUDA Resumo—Neste trabalho faz-se a exploração do poder computacional das unidades de processamento gráfico (Graphical Processing Units - GPUs) da NVIDIA em criptografia através do uso da tecnologia CUDA (Compute Unified Device Architecture). CUDA facilita o desenvolvimento de computação de propósito geral utilizando o processamento paralelo presente nas GPUs. Para isso, apresenta-se a arquitetura das GPUs NVIDIA e a tecnologia CUDA, além de conceitos e algoritmos de criptografia. Adicionalmente, é feita a comparação do desempenho da versão executada em CPU com a versão paralela dos algoritmos de criptografia Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) e Message- digest Algorithm 5 (MD5) escritos em CUDA.
