The scientific output of research sectors involved in Cuban R&D activities during the period 2003... more The scientific output of research sectors involved in Cuban R&D activities during the period 2003-2007, using Scopus as data source, was analyzed. Quantitative and qualitative dimension of the scientific production was described through a set of bibliometric indicators. The most productive and visible sectors were identified. The evolution of the total scientific output by sector, and the behavior of the three most important sectors were studied. Inter-sector relationships were visualized with the aim to analyze the national scientific macro-structure. The growth of Higher Education and Health Sector determined the nation's growth during this period. Despite a positive evolution of the Cuban scientific output, a weak linkage between universities and institutions of science and technological innovation, and also scarce relationships between scientific research centers and health institutions, were observed. Low indices of international collaboration in Health Sector, and deficient links between R&D units of enterprises and institutions belonging to Higher Education and Science and Technology, were also identified.

As it is known, Web of Science interface allows a user to obtain at most 100,000 items from a single query. But what about queries that achieve a result of more than 100,000 items? The exercise developed one possible way to achieve this objective. The case study is the retrieval of the entire scientific production from the United States in a specific year. Different sections of items were retrieved using the field Source of the database. Then, a simple Boolean statement was created with the aim of eliminating overlapping and to improve the accuracy of the search strategy. The importance of team work in the development of advanced search strategies was noted.

This short communication is a bibliometric approach about research on this vector, which is responsible for more than 25,000 deaths annually. Current scientific research on A. aegypti is characterized, using Scopus as data source. A total of 5039 published articles during the period 2006-2015 were retrieved. Two time-slices to calculate growth rates by countries and subject areas were developed. Coword analysis for research fronts identification was used. Scientific output was mainly concentrated in four Scopus subject areas: Medicine; Immunology and Microbiology; Agricultural and Biological Sciences; and Biochemistry, Genetics and Molecular Biology. Highest growth rate was observed in Pharmacology, Toxicology and Pharmaceutics. United States, Brazil and India were the most productive countries. Four research fronts were identified: epidemiology; gene expression and biological control; larvicidal and insecticidal effects; and reproduction and insecticide resistance. Literature on A. aegypti during the last 10 years showed an exponential growth. INTRODUCTION: Transmission levels and severity of infections in Aedes aegypti-transmitted disease... more INTRODUCTION: Transmission levels and severity of infections in Aedes aegypti-transmitted diseases have been currently intensified. However, non bibliometric studies have been published abording research on this vector, which is responsible of more than 25,000 deaths annually. PURPOSE: To characterize current scientific research on Aedes aegypti. METHODOLOGY: Scopus was used as data source. A total of 5039 published articles were retrieved during the period 2006-2015, using the term Aedes aegypti as serch strategy. Two time-slices to calculate growth rates by countries and subject areas were developed. Co-words analysis was used for research fronts identification. Bibexcel and VOSviewer were the software used for clustering and visualization of the most frequent terms. RESULTS: Scientific output was mainly concentrated by four Scopus subject areas: Medicine; Immunology & Microbiology; Agricultural & Biological Sciences; and Biochemistry, Genetics and Molecular Biology. CONCLUSIONS: Literature on Aedes aegypti during the last ten years experimented a linear growth. This growing was associated to the identification of mosquitos in new environments, as well as the appearing of outbreaks related to diseases transmitted by this vector.

We take two extreme cases, on one hand, an institution divided in departments with no collaboration between people in different departments. These could be disciplines or merely projects. On the other hand, we consider an institution that allows interactions between all individuals, without a departmental structure to a department. We compare the results with data from the Institute of Renewable Energy (IER) at UNAM, which has changed its organization and policies during the last 30 years, and we could quantitatively predict the changes observed in productivity and multidisciplinarity. This model can be applied to a broader set of institutions and processes.

Over the past four decades there have been considerable arguments against the arbitrary use of Garfield's Impact Factor in research evaluation. Over the past decade, the emergence of databases with considerable breadth of coverage, such as Scopus and Google Scholar, together with the general demand for greater accuracy in journal assessments, has motivated the emergence of alternative journal indicators. However, the study of Latin American journals using these quantitative measures is still scarce. Objectives. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the use of advanced bibliometric indicators to analyze the performance of scientific journals, and to identify a mainstream journals core in national and regional contexts. Methods. Thomson Reuters' Journal Citation Report and Elsevier's Journal Metrics were used as information sources. Four bibliometric indicators were selected to identify clusters of high-visibility journals: Impact Factor, Eigenfactor Score, Source Normalized Impact per Paper, and SCImago Journal Rank. A Self-Organizing Map (SOM) based artificial intelligence method to identify a mainstream journals core was also used. Mexican serials were selected for the case study. Results. The coverage of Mexican journals in Web of Science and Scopus during the period 2004-2013 was studied. The performance of Mexican scientific journals was also evaluated. Mexican journal rankings based on Scopus-based metrics versus Web of Science-based metrics were compared.

Bibliometrics is one of the more objective ways to the analysis and characterization of these communities. The current study characterized the behavior of the scientific community specialized on alopecia areata during the period 2001-2014, through a bibliometric perspective. The Web of Science was used as information source. A battery of bibliometric indicators was used to determine productivity, influence and performance of authors, as well as to characterize their most relevant researches. Annual productivity was determined. An exponential growth of the scientific output on alopecia areata was observed. The fifteen most productive journals were identified, which produced around 50 % of the total amount of articles. The most visible author´s core was identified. The value of H index was demonstrated, not only as indicator to determine scientific performance, but also as a measure to identify leadership in scientific knowledge domains, especially in the field of Medical Sciences.
