En primer lugar, los acuso a ustedes, enseñantes de ciencias, de dedicar sus energías a la mera transmisión de conocimientos y principios científicos; de ser, en otras palabras, libros de texto animados hasta el punto de que sus alumnos creen que la ciencia no es nada más que eso. En segundo lugar, los acuso de dar a sus alumnos una idea falsa de la esencia de la ciencia los acuso de no transmitir la gran verdad de que la esencia de la ciencia es un método, una empresa desordenada, imaginativa, con frecuencia poco sistemática donde la suerte y la perseverancia desempeñan un papel importante. Los acuso, pues, de transmitir a sus alumnus la idea falsa de que los modelos y analogías que utilizan para explicar ideas científicas son representaciones exactas de la realidad, en vez de ser, como son en realidad, construcciones imaginativas de la mente humana.

The 2016 Royal Society of Chemistry's report Future of the Chemical Sciences presents four differ... more The 2016 Royal Society of Chemistry's report Future of the Chemical Sciences presents four different scenarios for the future of chemistry: chemistry saves the world; pushbutton chemistry; a world without chemists; and free market chemistry. In this paper we ethically assess them. If chemistry is to solve many of the greatest challenges facing the contemporary world, prioritization of research topics will need to be done explicitly on the basis of moral values, such as solidarity and equity, but also environmental justice, which will have to be central in determining a research agenda for chemistry. The decentralization of chemistry will also present ethical challenges to the research standards established by the scientific community. Ethical education in chemistry may help counteract these risks. We also argue that if chemistry and its subdisciplines are to fulfil their goal of generating knowledge and helping us solve the great challenges of the contemporary world, then it is ethically imperative that scientists from different disciplines be more open to interdisciplinary work. Finally, if the future of chemistry is in free market forms, then it is necessary that we pay more attention to the possible risks that this model has. We call attention to two: first, it is likely that problems that affect the lowest income countries or the most disadvantaged sectors of society, who do not have the means to pay for some of the goods and services, will not be addressed; second, the free market tends to foster unsustainable forms of development.

En este libro se discute el desarrollo de algunas prácticas químicas, tanto académicas como indus... more En este libro se discute el desarrollo de algunas prácticas químicas, tanto académicas como industriales, a lo largo de buena parte del siglo XX. Pasando por la brutal irrupción en la vida pública española de F. Franco, líder del golpe de estado contra la República Española que dio lugar a la Guerra Civil (1936-39) y posteriormente a una férrea dictadura militar de casi cuarenta años de duración. En este largo periodo, químicos españoles, en España y en América Latina, sostuvieron sus prácticas desde una posición política, a veces clara, otras encubierta. En ambos lados del Atlántico, la presencia de los profesionales de la química resultó fundamental y ejemplifica lo que el autor denomina la ambigüedad moral de la química.

ABSTRACT En: Alambique : didáctica de las ciencias experimentales Barcelona 2005, n. 46, octubre-... more ABSTRACT En: Alambique : didáctica de las ciencias experimentales Barcelona 2005, n. 46, octubre-diciembre ; p. 9-17 Se plantea una reflexión sobre el hecho de que los conceptos científicos surgen de situaciones problemáticas y por lo tanto, requieren de una situación real en la que aplicarse y en la que adquieren sentido. Se reclama un cambio en la visión dogmática y cerrada que se proporciona en las clases tradicionales de la ciencia, haciéndose necesario recuperar el carácter dinámico y tentativo de las ciencias mediante actividades específicas de ciencia contextualizada, con ello se avanza en la distinción entre ejercicios y problemas, reconociéndose el valor de construir un currículo de ciencia escolar integrado alrededor de problemas reales, y no de simples ejercicios memorísticos, bibliografia p. 16-17

The trans → cis rearrangement of the trans-[PdCl2(LAllyl)2] complex was observed. The relative thermodynamic stability of these isomers was studied using DFT calculations.

La historia de lo que América Latina es en la actualidad responde, de alguna manera, a su situación geográfica, su variedad ecológica, y su habilidad para intercambiar productos con otros países. Se consideran tres fases históricas: Prehispánica (hasta el principio del siglo XVI), donde se ponderan los productos. Colonial (siglos XVI-XVIII), donde predominan los procesos. Independiente (principios del XIX hasta nuestros días), donde se establecen las instituciones. Hoy América Latina produce alrededor de 2% de la investigación química.

The graphic organizer called here heuristic diagram as an improvement of Gowin's Vee heuristic is... more The graphic organizer called here heuristic diagram as an improvement of Gowin's Vee heuristic is proposed as a tool to teach history of science. Heuristic diagrams have the purpose of helping students (or teachers, or researchers) to understand their own research considering that asks and problem-solving are central to scientific activity. The left side originally related in Gowin's Vee with philosophies, theories, models, laws or regularities now agrees with Toulmin's concepts (language, models as representation techniques and application procedures). Mexican science teachers without experience in science education research used the heuristic diagram to learn about the history of chemistry considering also in the left side two different historical times: past and present. Through a semantic differential scale teachers' attitude to the heuristic diagram was evaluated and its usefulness was demonstrated. If we just show the findings and products of science, no matter how useful and inspiring they may be, without communicating its critical method, how the average person can distinguish between science and pseudoscience?
