This paper looks into a rhetorical device often employed to induce such changes, namely the play upon words which results in puns. These are quite frequently used because of their playfulness and humorous effect and can easily be identified in advertising, political discourse or mass media. Their usefulness is further demonstrated by the fact that they are employed even by the Romanian Intelligence Service, an institution whose very objective is an extremely serious onenational security, protection of democratic values, civil rights and freedoms, and the rule of law. Thus, the paper analyses some of the messages which the institution sends out in order to maintain a link with the public and decodes the levels of signification involved therein.

From Ceausescu's ideological perspective, that particular period offered arguments for supporting protochronist theories while exaggerating the dimension of the "pioneering" phenomenon, the theory of the Romanian Europeanity and devotion of cultural elites regarding the Romanian identity project.
