In 1996 I got a degree in Physical Sciences from the University of La Laguna. I got a PhD at the same university in the year 2002 in the PhD program of Computers, Automatic and Communications. I joined as researcher and part-time teacher at the University of La Laguna in the year 1998. Since January 2011 I am an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Systems Engineering in the area of knowledge of Systems Engineering and Automation.

Se deben de elegir los protocolos adecuados para controlar el vehículo, transmitir las imágenes capturadas por las cámaras y asegurar un funcionamiento en tiempo real de la aplicación. Automatic marker selection for watershed segmentation is a difficult problem. Most of the existin... more Automatic marker selection for watershed segmentation is a difficult problem. Most of the existing procedures are intended for specific application fields and usually require some prior knowledge about the problem at hand. A simple and general method for generating markers is proposed. The markers are obtained from the splitting of the three-dimensional (3D) colour histogram of the image and imposed as minima for watershed segmentation. The method has been tested on natural images from the Berkeley segmentation dataset (BSDS500), showing results comparable with the state-of-the-art segmentation algorithms.

The contribution of this paper is a technique that in certain circumstances allows one to avoid t... more The contribution of this paper is a technique that in certain circumstances allows one to avoid the removal of dynamic shadows in the visible spectrum making use of images in the infrared spectrum. This technique emerged from a real problem concerning the autonomous navigation of a vehicle in a wind farm. In this environment, the dynamic shadows cast by the wind turbines' blades make it necessary to include a shadows removal stage in the preprocessing of the visible spectrum images in order to avoid the shadows being misclassified as obstacles. In the thermal images, dynamic shadows completely disappear, something that does not always occur in the visible spectrum, even when the preprocessing is executed. Thus, a fusion on thermal and visible bands is performed.

In order to ensure the required quality in the images the telescope provides, it is necessary to carry out the mirror active control. Due to the strong interconnections existing among the different segments composing the GTC’s primary mirror, a fully decentralized control does not provide the desired performance. However, it is possible to use a control strategy, we call ‘local-global’, combining a centralized and a decentralized control actions. When this strategy is used, the closed-loop system results in a multifrequency one, whose stability can not be analitically determined in a easy way. The purpose of this paper is to show how the appropriate inclusion of the lifting operators in the closed-loop system blocks diagram allows to carry out the stability study by computing the closed-loop system matrix eigenvalues. A real-time control laboratory is presented here. The experiments are based on a non-linear plant... more A real-time control laboratory is presented here. The experiments are based on a non-linear plant and are oriented to undergraduate courses on digital control and intelligent control. The strategies proposed are both classical and intelligent techniques. Thus, the students can compare, on the real plant, the results obtained with both approaches. The control problem is to eliminate the load oscillations in a transport crane. To solve this problem the students will apply a classical state feedback controller and then will improve this algorithm with intelligent techniques based on neural networks (NN) and fuzzy logic (FL). The experiments are carried out on a low-cost scale prototype.

In this paper, the authors describe the general lines of a method based on this technique for fully reconstructing 3D scenes, and conduct an analytical study of its performance and sensitivity to errors in the pitch angle of the stereoscopic vision system. The equations of the planes calculated for a given error in this angle yield the deviation with respect to the ideal planes (with a zero error in the angle) for a large test set consisting of planes with different orientations, which is represented graphically to analyze the method’s qualitative and quantitative performance. The relationship between the deviation of the planes and the error in the pitch angle is observed to be linear. The aim of this paper is to present a dynamic system for the automatic and dynamic generation of ... more The aim of this paper is to present a dynamic system for the automatic and dynamic generation of CV documents in an academic and research environment. In particular, this system has been developed in the FES Department of the University of La Laguna, Spain. For that purpose, the authors have integrated Multiagent Systems (MAS) with XML and Apache Cocoon, designing a web portal where the users – in this case, professors and research studentscan manage their CV data. Regarding to the use of Apache Cocoon and apart from showing its great potential, one of the main contributions of the work presented in this paper consists of the dynamic generation of the web environment, since the forms presented to the user change as soon as the structure of the XML files is modified. In other aspect, the agents will ensure the privacy and safety of the data.
