Background: Evidence‐based practice (EBP) models provide a framework to guide organizations and their clinicians to implement evidence‐based policies, protocols, and guidelines. A historical review of evidence‐based models is presented. The revised Colorado Patient‐Centered Interprofessional EBP Model supports use of research evidence and nonresearch evidence and adopts a patient‐centered approach to EBP. Aim: The purpose of this article is to present a framework that can be used to transform an organization and foster the use of evidence by interdisciplinary team members. Approach: An evidence‐based intervention to decrease catheter associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) is presented to show how the model is operationalized. The EBP model is supported by the five steps that clinicians should use as they identify a clinical problem, gather the evidence, and move the evidence into practice. To provide quality patient care and achieve positive patient outcomes, it is widely recognized that organizations must develop a supportive environment that encourages individuals to practice from a research- and evidence-based framework. This article describes a Web-based professional educational program designed to teach principles of evidence-based practice to nurses in rural hospitals. Nurses working in staff development will find this useful for designing educational programs for staff in rural hospitals.

The Colorado Health Outcomes (COHO) Department of the School of Medicine at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center (UCHSC) coordinates the Rocky Mountain Evidence-Based Health Care (EBHC) Workshop, which has been held annually since 1999. The goals of the workshop include helping participants-physicians, pharmacists, health care policy makers, journalists and librarians-learn and apply skills for critically appraising medical research literature and for effective use of evidence-based information resources. Participants are encouraged to share ideas and to plan local services and instruction for those working in clinical settings. Each year, librarians from UCHSC Denison Memorial Library participate as faculty by teaching searching skills (PubMed, Cochrane Library, ACP Journal Club, etc.), providing support to small groups, and staffing two computer labs. In 2002, Denison Library received a National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM) MidContinental Region Impact Award to fund the attendance of three health sciences librarians from the MidContinental Region, an academic education librarian, a clinical medical librarian, and a department librarian. In this paper, the participating librarians share the lessons they learned about how health care practitioners approach evidence-based practice. The participating librarians also share how they incorporated these lessons into their support of evidence-based practice related to teaching about evidence-based resources, assisting health care practitioners with developing answerable questions, enhancing the clinician-librarian partnership, and assisting practitioners in selecting evidence-based resources for quick answers to clinical questions.

ii This volume contains the full papers accepted for presentation at the BioLINK 2005 meeting. This workshop represents the first joint Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL)/Intelligent Systems for Molecular Biology (ISMB) meeting. Each organization has held a workshop in this area for the past three to four years; this is the first meeting sponsored jointly by the two parent organizations. In bringing these two groups together, we have also melded two different traditions of distribution. The ISMB tradition has been focussed on invited talks and "short papers" describing works in progress. The ACL tradition has focussed on rigorously peer-reviewed full papers describing compeleted work. This workshop features works in the three categories of "full paper," "short paper," and poster submissions. Submissions in all three categories underwent an ACL-style peer review process.

The goal of an information-literacy program is to develop student skills in locating, evaluating, and applying information for use in critical thinking and problem solving. This paper describes a multidimensional evaluation process for determining nursing students' growth in cognitive and affective domains. Results indicate improvement in student skills as a result of a nursing information literacy program. Multidimensional evaluation produces a well rounded
picture of student progress based on formal measurement as
well as informal feedback. Developing new educational programs can be a time-consuming challenge. It is important, when expending so much effort, to ensure that the goals of the new program are achieved and benefits to students demonstrated. A multidimensional approach to evaluation
can help to accomplish those ends. In 1988, the University of
Northern Colorado School of Nursing began working with a librarian to integrate an information-literacy component, entitled Pathways to Information Literacy, into the curriculum [1]. This article describes the program and discusses how a multidimensional evaluation process was used to assess program effectiveness. The evaluation process not only helped to measure the effectiveness of the program but also allowed the instructors to use several different approaches to evaluation.

This case study examines strategies used to leverage the library’s existing journal licenses to obtain a large collection of full-text journal articles in XML format, the right to text mine the collection, and the right to use the collection and the data mined from it for grant-funded research to develop biomedical natural language processing (BNLP) tools. Researchers attempted to obtain content directly from PubMed Central (PMC). This attempt failed because of limits on use of content in PMC. Next, researchers and their library liaison attempted to obtain content from contacts in the technical divisions of the publishing industry. This resulted in an incomplete research data set. Researchers, the library liaison, and the acquisitions librarian then collaborated with the sales and technical staff of a major science, technology, engineering, and medical (STEM) publisher to successfully create a method for obtaining XML content as an extension of the library’s typical acquisition process for electronic resources. Our experience led us to realize that text-mining rights of full-text articles in XML format should routinely be included in the negotiation of the library’s licenses.

A joint program of instruction was created between the University of Northern Colo*.-ado's Michener Library and School of Nursing. This expanded bibliographic instruction program was based on a proposal that outlined the need for information liteLacy instruction in nursing education, enumerated the possible benefits of such instruction to students and faculty, and outlined the course content and assignments that might oe included. First offered in the fall semester of 1988, the course is currently pre3ented as part of two courses and includes four class sessions of one and a half hours each. The first session is included in an introductory course, Conceptual Foundations; the remaining three sessions are included in the required course on nursing research. This report provides background information on the course, a copy of the Proposal, an outline of the lecture Lontent for each session, a resource bibliography, a background survey questionnaire for students, and handouts and assigments created for the course. Thi lourse materials include a resource bibliography; assignments for re _arch papers; guides and assignments for using Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI), MEDLINE on CD-ROM, and the Index Medicus and Nursing and Allied Health (CINAHL) online databases. Also provided are handouts on the APA (American Psychological Association) style manual, scholarly research, and sources of information on evaluation, and tests and measurement. A topics chart for organizing a research paper, the questionnaire for the 1990-1991 survey of library users, and questions included in the graduate follow-up survey are also included. (MAB)

Arguing that today's nursing students will be better prepared to face future challenges if they possess information literacy skills, this paper describes an information literacy program which has been integrated into the University of Northern Colorado's School of Nursing curriculum. Information literacy is described and defined, and the four goals of the information literacy program are outlined: (1) to teach students how information is identified and defined by experts; (2) to teach students how information sources are structured; (3) to teach students how information sources are intellectually accessed; and (4) to teach students how information sources are physically organized.
