Serious risk assessment and pest management in forestry need practicable tools based on profound knowledge about triggers of insect outbreaks. At the Institute of Forest Entomology a rating system was established which facilitates the evaluation of a given region with respect to its potentials for bark beetle development. The practical and empirical work has been carried out mainly with MapModels -a graphical modelling language based on ArcView® which supports easy development of analysis procedures by means of flowchart representations.

A comprehensive grid cell model was prepared at a scale of 1:500.000, linking basic data in terms of the Earth sciences and regional planning as well as technical models, to permit a generalised forecast to be made on the near-surface geothermal potential in Austria. The basis of the grid cell model was a regional planning model delimiting areas of potential geothermal usage and areas to be excluded. The areas found that lent themselves to geothermal usage were associated with a generalised ground model, which allowed the potential technical extraction capacity to be calculated by means of a simulation on the basis of reference production plant (vertical collector, shallow collector). It was thus possible to determine the geothermal potential (technical potential, the potential to meet requirements) in combination with the demand situation, that is, the specific heating demand related to housing units. Building types were defined, using structural and site-specific building data, and these were associated with heating-demand data on the assumption of heating refurbishment being carried out. Im Rahmen der Studie GEO-Pot wurde ein flächendeckendes Rasterzellenmodell im Maßstab 1:500.000 erarbeitet, das aufgrund der Verknüpfung von geowissenschaftlichen Basisdaten, technischen Modellen und raumplanerischen Kennwerten eine generalisierte Prognose zum oberflächennahen, geothermischen Potenzial Österreichs liefert. Die Grundlage des Rasterzellenmodells bildet ein raumplanerisches Modell, welches potenzielle Nutzungs- und Ausschlussflächen eingrenzt. Angesichts der zunehmenden Häufigkeit und der Intensität extremer Hitzeereignisse sind der Erhalt und die Schaffung öffentlicher Grünflächen besonders wichtig. Gerade in Städten bieten öffentliche Grünflächen eine Vielzahl ökologischer und hitzereduzierender Dienstleistungen und tragen dadurch maßgeblich zur Lebensqualität der Bewohner-Innen bei. Die vorliegende Diplomarbeit analysiert den räumlichen Zusammenhang zwischen dem Zugang zu öffentlichen Grünflächen und hitzebezogener Vulnerabilität in Wien. Zur Identifizierung der vulnerablen Bevölkerung wurde basierend auf zwölf umweltbezogenen und soziodemografischen Variablen ein Hitzevulnerabilitätsindex (HVI) für Wien erstellt. Mithilfe von ArcGIS wurde eine Netzwerkanalyse durchgeführt, um festzustellen, ob jene StadtbewohnerInnen, die laut HVI als vulnerabler gegenüber Hitze gelten, einen schlechteren Zugang zu öffentlichen Grünflächen haben, wobei die Freiund Grünraumrichtlinien der Stadt Wien berücksichtigt werden. Public transport – as the key element of an eco-friendly mobility system – is currently underrepresented in GIS-based accessibility analyses due to a lack of data. Efforts to make machinereadable timetable information available in the open GTFS format as OpenData offer new possibilities. The integration of these data into geographical information systems provides the basis for spatial analyses in the field of accessibility and thus the possibility to generate valid accessibility indicators for public transport. This paper discusses examples of first implementations of common indicators, such as travel time budget indicators and gravity based indicators, and shows potentials of enhancing these indicators by incorporating a “probability dimension”.

For many years, GIS has been a flexible tool for a wide range of spatial tasks in the spatial planning curriculum of at TU Wien. The steadily increasing number of students, the rising number of participants struggling with solving analytical problems, as well as suboptimal evaluation strategies initiated a total redesign of the course. We have rebuilt the didactic concept to better support the learning process and strengthen the understanding of learned skills, and have automated large parts of the evaluation, which allows for a more thorough assessment of quantitative results.

Anastylosis is the archaeological and architectural reconstruction of a ruined monument at the historic site after careful study of the remaining original elements. We present research results concerning 3D technologies that are used in the digital anastylosis of cultural heritage monuments. Based on current state-of-the-art research we present 3D data collection, digital artefact reconstruction, and digital reassembly of existing fragments, illustrated by means of the Octagon monument in Ephesos, Turkey. Our focus is on methods that belong to geometry processing.

Shifting traffic to active transport modes (eg. walking/cycling) poses one of the most promising ways of tackling the persisting challenges that arise from motorized traffic. However, planning and policy making in walking and cycling domains is frequently impeded by a small-scaled and heterogeneous political landscape that rarely acts based on evidence thus limiting cost-effectiveness and target achievement. This paper proposes a largely datadriven planning approach that builds upon aggregated statistical models explaining walking and cycling modal shares. In addition to investigating a comprehensive set of influencing factors in relevant fields such as environment, climate, infrastructure or demographics, we bring attention to the role of political and administrative commitment in aggregated modal share modeling. Results suggest that our holistic approach is feasible both methodologically and in terms of its applicability in planning practice. As a first step towards evidence-based decision making the incremental effects of individual planning measures can be simulated and thus be used to rank options according to their effectiveness. Another outcome lies in the data-driven identification of spatial target areas for specific agenda setting in terms of awareness, mobility behavior, infrastructure, settlement structure and other planning-relevant domains.

The so-called Hadrian's Temple is one of the most famous monuments in the ancient city of Ephesus (Turkey) and occupies a prominent location in the western section of Curetes Street, one of the chief thoroughfares of the site. This paper explains the on-site conditions for creating an up-to-date architectural documentation including three-dimensional digital scan data of the temple and also discusses the different 3D surface scanning systems which were employed for this task: fringe projection and time of flight laser scanning based on phase shifting. With respect to the required resolution and the scale of the documentation both methods are ideally suited to digitally record certain areas of the Temple. Furthermore, this paper puts a focus on how both types of 3D scan data can be combined in a final 3D model within specific postprocessing steps. The scanning results as well as the virtual reconstruction of Hadrian's Temple will be presented in this paper.

am Österreichischen archäologischen Institut (ÖaI) wurde in den Jahren von 2009 bis 2012 ein Projekt zum sog. Hadrianstempel an der Kuretenstraße in Ephesos (abb. 151) durchgeführt, das vom fonds zur förderung der wissenschaftlichen forschung finanziert wurde.1 der kleine Tempel aus der römischen Kaiserzeit mit seinem charakteristischen syrischen Giebel ist eines der bekanntesten Monumente von ephesos. Zur architekturdokumentation wurden verschiedene Methoden des 3D-Surface Scannings angewandt. Diese sollen im folgenden exemplarisch vorgestellt werden, um die anwendungsmöglichkeiten dieser Methoden im Bereich der dokumentation von denkmälern sowie einer auf diesen Daten basierenden Präsentation auszuloten.

In June 2010, the Dwelling Unit 7 of the Terrace House 2 in Ephesus, Turkey, was scanned from 172 scanning positions covering the object completely. Altogether, approximately 10 billion laser scanning points and a set of control points were acquired. In order to enable a global registration of the given datasets, we applied a robust 3D filtering method on the individual scans to reduce the amount data. After the registration, the points were merged to one point cloud by means of the same 3D filtering process. The main task of the project was the determination of 2D floor plans and sections and the generation of scaled projections of numerous walls for further archaeological interpretation. When investigating national and international transport policies of the last decade, an ever increasing emphasis on promoting non-motorized transport modes such as walking or cycling can be identified, aiming at reaching multiple political targets (eg. reducing pollution, increasing health or lowering land consumption). However, despite substantial financial efforts being put into infrastructural or awarenessraising activities, achieving the desired modal shift towards active mobility remains a challenge. This is frequently due to unclear cause and effect patterns between active mode shares and their determinants, which in turn leads to uncoordinated or highly fragmented initiatives that impede target-oriented planning. An internationally adopted approach to overcome this problem is applying aggregated statistical models that explain modal choice involving multiple regression techniques and hypothetical covariates.
