The effect of a gastrointestinal carcinogen, 1-methyl-3-nitro-l-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG), on chromosomes of rat digestive tract epithelial cells was studied. A blind loop of colorectal segment was surgically produced and the epithelial cells of this loop were treated twice with 0.5% and 0.1% MNNG solutions, respectively (5 ml each). After the first treatment, the mucosa revealed severe damage, and repair and mitoses upon regeneration were maximal on days 4 6. Chromosomal aberrations were studied 3 48 hr after the second treatment. Cells with chromosomal aberrations increased progressively from 6 hr on, reaching their maximum level at 15 hr, and gradually returned to the original level at 48 hr. Chromosomal aberrations consisted of gaps, breaks, and exchanges. The above results indicate that gastrointestinal carcinogens induce chromosomal aberrations in target epithelial cells.

This paper describes our project which studies skill acquisition mechanism and develops skill transfer systems. To clarify skill acquisition mechanism, we analyze top athletes, elite music performers and handicapped persons who have advanced skills which are not found in ordinary people. Then we will develop skill transfer systems by using advanced computer vision, robotics and artificial intelligence.

This paper investigates the usage of informal-style (IF) by advanced learners of Japanese as a second language when they shift from a formal (polite) speech style into an informal (plain) version. The data consists of fifteen dyads between native and non-native speakers who meet for the first time. The results show there was negligible difference in the plain form usage between learners and native speakers, but the learners used IF proportionally more than native speakers. The analysis of sentence final particles, rising intonation, and WH-questions in the learners’ IF forms revealed that the learners’ use of plain forms became IF in the following two occasions: First, the learners expressed a spontaneous emotional reaction, and the plain form was accompanied by the particle YO, NE, or rising intonation. Second, they used rising intonation but did not use self-monitoring discourse markers in monologues.

This paper intends to analyze the effect of design management on business performance quantitatively, focusing on firms receiving international design awards, which are supposed to represent their competitive design. First, we conduct a traditional performance study concerning stock and financial indices in Japan to offer the geographical complement to predecessors focusing on other areas. However, the findings from these methods are not always reliable because it entails methodological defects in itself. Thus, secondly, an event study is implemented in order to complement the results of the performance study. It can be said not only to hold a high level of reproducibility and objectivity, but also to help us exclude practically all the effects of factors other than design. En Japón, la educación de lenguas extranjeras ha estado a cargo, tradicionalmente, de los lingüistas y los especialistas de la literatura de cada idioma. Sin embargo, últimamente hay cada vez más docentes que se han formado en el ramo de las ciencias sociales. El autor de este ensayo es uno de ellos: me formé en el Departamento de Estudios Latinoamericanos de una universidad japonesa y, luego, he hecho estudios sobre la política mexicana a nivel local y la migración mexicana hacia los Estados Unidos, haciendo mi trabajo de campo en el estado de Yucatán, principalmente 3 .
