Kinetic energy is established by a mathematical equation involving the mass of an object and the ... more Kinetic energy is established by a mathematical equation involving the mass of an object and the speed at which the object travels, and is a relevant measure in regards to athletic performance due to frequent transfer of energy during sport (i.e. athlete to athlete (tackling), athlete to object (throwing), object to object (tennis/baseball hitting)). Previous research has utilized the 60-yd run-shuttle to examine kinetic energy factors (k-factor) of difference sports, recognizing significant differences in energy capability between gender, sport teams, and individual sport positions. The utilization of k-factor, pertaining to baseball, has distinguished significant positional (i.e. infielder, outfielder, catcher, pitcher) differences. Similarities are noted between the baseball pitching motion and the kinetic chain employed in agility tests that involve acceleration, deceleration, and change of direction measures of agility. PURPOSE: The purpose of this investigation was to determine pre-season agility in NCAA pitchers and to relate these measures to regular season pitching performance. METHODS: NCAA Division II pitchers (n=10, age 20.2 ± 1.9 yrs., weight 83.8 ± 10.3 kg, height 1.85 ± 0.48 m) volunteered as study subjects. Players are tasked to execute successful and efficient accelerations, sprints, abrupt stops, quick changes of direction, varying vertical jumps, and many times a combination of these motor skills. Agility can greatly impact the skills required for an athlete to excel on the court. The purpose of this study was to investigate how the agility of basketball players affected their in-game performance during regular season conference contests. The subjects (N = 10) in this study were members of a collegiate men’s basketball team. Agility of the subjects were measured using the JJ Shuttle which produces four segment times and a total time. These five shuttle times were compared for correlation to their in-game performance during regular season conference play. In its entirety, the article is meant to clarify the complex scenarios woven into the NCAA Manual. Further, the observations serve to illuminate the obscure corners of collegiate football that house potential opportunity and possible pitfalls as the student-athlete advances to the gridiron. Little research exists on hearing health of individuals using cardiovascular entertainment (CE) s... more Little research exists on hearing health of individuals using cardiovascular entertainment (CE) systems while exercising.The authors have previously researched and discovered patrons of a fitness center voluntarily prefer volume settings above the recommended safe hearing levels. The purpose of this study was to investigate preferences for volume settings of CE systems within the environment of a university fitness center when hearing health warning signs are posted. Participants (N=104) completed a cardiovascular workout while listening to music and/or television on a CE system with earphones. All participants exceeded the manufacturer's suggested volume setting levels while hearing health warning signs were posted, thus endangering hearing health.

Kinesiology is one of the fastest growing and expanding majors regarding student enrollment. As a... more Kinesiology is one of the fastest growing and expanding majors regarding student enrollment. As a result, Kinesiology academic units are having to implement organizational changes. This study describes the steps taken during a Kinesiology department-to-school academic unit transformation at a mid-sized public university located in Southwest United States. Qualitative research methodology included a walking interview with the change agent, an Associate Dean and Professor of Kinesiology. After transcribing the interview verbatim and conducting data analysis deductive coding,we found that the efforts made during the change process followed John Kotter"s Eight Stage Process for Change model. It is important to note that the change agent was unaware of the Kotter"s change management model prior to the current study. Therefore, this study is particularly important because it not only contributes to existing literature on Kotter"s model, but also reveals that Kotter"s change management process was in fact intuitive. This article concludes with a call for future research on the intuitiveness of Kotter"s change process and encourages Kinesiology leaders and change agents to look to change management models for theoretical and practical guidance.

Publishing in the Blogosphere: Impacts on Students’ Professional Writing

To determine if writing weekly blog posts with peer-editing will improve graduate students' profe... more To determine if writing weekly blog posts with peer-editing will improve graduate students' professional writing skills, as well as their confidence in and attitudes toward their professional writing Methodology: Students wrote 10 weekly blog posts on topics of their choice, using APA format and 2 cited peer-reviewed references. Weekly, they completed peer editing and received edits from the instructor before posting a final draft of the blog online. A rubric was used to evaluate changes in writing skills from the first to the final blog post. Additionally, a focus group discussion was completed at the end of the experience to evaluate students' attitudes and perceptions. Findings: Three of the 4 writing skills and the overall average rubric scores improved significantly from the first to the last blog post. Throughout the focus group discussion, a few themes surfaced including accountability for one's writing, exposure to a wide audience, improvement in writing skills, a sense of purpose/importance, and a better appreciation for the importance of good writing skills. Practical Implications: Blogging can have a profound impact on the writing skills, confidence, and attitudes of collegiate students. This is a unique approach to teaching professional writing and research skills in the collegiate setting.
