This paper focuses on Urbanization and Economics growth in Africa. The method applied is panel data investigation to justify the endogeneity problem related to such variables, GMM. We included variables important for economic growth and found that urbanization has both pros and cons for the economic growth in the region which are supported by extended neoclassical economic models. Some variables like government expenditure and Capital formation has to modify to manage the dynamic estimation techniques. The finding that urbanization impacted the economics growth of the region may be explained by the slum and unorganized urban policy in Africa.

The European Union Emission Trading Scheme (EU ETS) is a cornerstone of the EU’s strategy to fight climate change and an important device for plummeting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in an economically efficient manner. The power industry has switched to an auction-based allocation system at the onset of Phase III of the EU ETS to bring economic efficiency by negating windfall profits that have been resulted from grandfathered allocation of allowances in the previous phases. Demand response (DR) programs have gained much attention during the last three decades to optimize the decisions of the electricity market participants considering the demand-side management (DSM). It can potentially enhance system reliability and manages price volatility by modifying the amount or time of electricity consumption. This paper proposes a novel game-theoretical model accounting for the relationship between retailers (leaders) and consumers (followers) in a dynamic price environment where both players optimize their respective economic goals under uncertainty. The model is solved under two frameworks. First by considering retailer's market power and second by accounting for an equilibrium setting based on a Cournot game. The interplay between risk aversion and financial derivatives has received increasing attention since the advent of electricity market liberalization. One important challenge in this context is how to develop economically efficient and cost-effective models to integrate renewable energy sources (RES) in the electricity market, which constitutes a relatively new and exciting field of research. This paper proposes a game-theoretical equilibrium model that characterizes the interactions between oligopolistic generators in a two-stage electricity market under the presence of high RES penetration. Given conventional generators with generation cost uncertainty and renewable generators with intermittent and stochastic capacity, we consider a single futures contract market that is cleared prior to a spot market where the energy delivery takes place. We introduce physical and financial contracts to evaluate their performance and assess their impact on the electricity market outcomes and examine how these depend on the level of RES penetration. Since market participants are usually risk averse, a coherent risk measure is introduced to deal with both risk neutral and risk averse generators. We derive analytical relationships between contracts, study the implications of uncertainties, test the performance of the proposed equilibrium model and its main properties through numerical examples. Our results show that overall electricity prices, generation costs, profits, and quantities for conventional generators decrease, whereas quantities and profits for RES generators increase with RES penetration. Hence, both physical and financial contracts efficiently mitigate the impact of uncertainties and help the integration of RES into the electricity system. However, each type of contract has different quantitative impacts on the market outcomes. Moreover, risk aversion increases profit and decreases generators’ risk under different levels of competition by shielding them from the risk associated with cost, demand, and RES uncertainties.

Small ruminant lentiviruses (SRLVs) represent a group of viruses infecting sheep and goats worldwide. Despite the high heterogeneity of genotype A strains, which cluster into as many as ten subtypes, genotype B was believed to be less complex and has, so far, been subdivided into only two subtypes. Here, we describe two novel full-length proviral sequences isolated from Sarda sheep in two Italian regions. Genome sequence as well as the main linear epitopes clearly placed this cluster into genotype B. However, owing to long-standing segregation of this sheep breed, the genetic distances that are clearly .15 % with respect to B1 and B2 subtypes suggest the designation of a novel subtype, B3. Moreover the close relationship with a gag sequence obtained from a Turkish sheep adds new evidence to historical data that suggest an anthropochorous dissemination of hosts (small ruminants) and their pathogens (SRLV) during the colonization of the Mediterranean from the Middle East.

Sheep were immunized against Visna/Maedi virus (VMV) gag and/or env genes via the nasopharynxassociated lymphoid tissue (NALT) and lung using polyethylenimine (PEI)-DNA complexes and modified vaccinia Ankara, and challenged with live virus via the lung. env immunization enhanced humoral responses prior to but not after VMV challenge. Systemic T cell proliferative and cytotoxic responses were generally low, with the responses following single gag gene immunization being significantly depressed after challenge. A transient reduction in provirus load in the blood early after challenge was observed following env immunization, whilst the gag gene either alone or in combination with env resulted in significantly elevated provirus loads in lung. However, despite this, a significant reduction in lesion score was observed in animals immunized with the single gag gene at post-mortem. Inclusion of IFN-␥ in the immunization mixture in general had no significant effects. The results thus showed that protective effects against VMV-induced lesions can be induced following respiratory immunization with the single gag gene, though this was accompanied by an increased pulmonary provirus load.

Small ruminant lentiviruses infect sheep and goats worldwide, causing chronic progressive diseases and relevant economic losses. Disease eradication and prevention is mostly based on serological testing. The goal of this research was to investigate the presence of the small ruminant lentiviruses (SRLVs) in Jordan and to characterize the serological response in sheep and goat populations. A panel of sera were collected from flocks located in Northern Jordan and Jordan Valley. The samples were tested using three ELISA assays: a commercially available ELISA based on p25 recombinant protein and transmembrane peptide derived from British maedi-visna virus (MVV) EV1 strain, an ELISA based on P16-P25 recombinant protein derived from two Italian strains representative of MVV-and caprine arthritis encephalitis virus (CAEV)-like SRLVs, and an ELISA based on SU5 peptide from the same two Italian isolates. The results indicate that both MVV-and CAEV-like strains are present in Jordan and that the majority of the viruses circulating among sheep and goat populations belong to the MVV-like genotype.

The aim of this study was the development of gag and pol dual labelled probe real-time PCR and RT PCR assays to quantify the proviral load and the transcripts of the British Visna/maedi virus EV1 strain. Primers and probes were chosen based on the consensus sequences of gag and pol clones representative of EV1 genetic variants. Both PCRs had a detection limit of 3 copies of target gene, with a linearity over 6 orders of magnitude. The performances of the two PCRs in vivo were evaluated and compared on a panel of DNAs extracted from blood of sheep infected experimentally with EV1. The pol assay detected in most cases lower numbers of viral molecules than gag assay, yielding some false negative results. The gag real-time RT PCR had a detection limit of 100 RNA molecules with a linearity over 5 orders of magnitude. This did not result in a lower performance of the RT PCR compared to the PCR in cells permissive for virus replication, which contain higher numbers of viral transcripts than proviral genomes. The real-time assays developed in this study, particularly the gag assay, provide a sensitive tool which can be used to quantify the viral load in experimental infections.

We have examined the role of the AP-1 transcription factor on thymocyte maturation and thymus architecture by overexpressing FosB2 in transgenic mice. FosB2 is a naturally occurring splice variant of the FosB2 gene, encoding a truncated protein which lacks two domains necessary for transcriptional activation. The expression of FosB2 in the thymocytes severely aected their maturation and the structure of the whole thymus: the phenotype developed slowly during the ®rst months of life, resulting in a progressive expansion of the medulla and concomitant reduction of the cortex. CD4 + thymocytes represented the major thymocyte population, whereas the CD4 + 8 + thymocytes were virtually absent. This phenotype appeared to be an intrinsic property of bone marrow derived cells, as it could be reproduced in bone marrow chimaeric mice. This pathology was very reminiscent to that observed in mice overexpressing c-Fos in thymic epithelium: also in that case the thymus underwent with age a progressive expansion of the epithelium and major changes in the ratio of thymocyte subsets, but the phenotype appeared to be an intrinsic property of the epithelial cells since it could not be reproduced by transgenic bone marrow transplantation. We speculate that both overexpression of FosB2 in thymocytes and overexpression of c-Fos in thymic epithelium results in aberrant signaling between thymocytes and stroma, that ultimately alters the thymic micromilieu, leading to this severe pathology.

Hemizygosity for the retinoblastoma gene RB in man strongly predisposes to retinoblastoma. In the mouse, however, Rb hemizygosity leaves the retina normal, whereas in Rb -/-chimeras pRb-deficient retinoblasts undergo apoptosis. To test whether concomitant inactivation of the Rb-related gene p107 is required to unleash the oncogenic potential of pRb deficiency in the mouse retina, we inactivated both Rb and p107 by homologous recombination in embryonic stem cells and generated chimeric mice. Retinoblastomas were found in five out of seven adult pRb/p107-deficient chimeras. The retinal tumors showed amacrine cell differentiation, and therefore originated from cells committed to the inner but not the outer nuclear layer. Retinal lesions were already observed at embryonic day 17.5. At this stage, the primitive nuclear layer exhibited severe dysplasia, including rosette-like arrangements, and apoptosis. These findings provide formal proof for the role of loss of Rb in retinoblastoma development in the mouse and the first in vivo evidence that p107 can exert a tumor suppressor function.

Maedi-Visna virus (MVV) is a non-oncogenic ovine lentivirus whose main targets are the lung, mammary gland, central nervous system and joints. Cells of the monocyte-macrophage lineage are the major viral target in vivo; other cell types are infected as well, as indicated by several studies, largely based on the examination of animals infected experimentally or on the in vitro infection of cultured cells. Aim of this study was to investigate the cell types harbouring the viral genome in lungs and mammary glands of animals infected naturally by using in situ PCR-associated immunohistochemistry. Several types of cells were infected: in the lung type I and II pneumocytes, interstitial and alveolar macrophages, endothelial cells and fibroblast-like cells. Epithelial cells, macrophages, endothelial cells and fibroblast-like cells were infected also in the mammary gland. These results indicate that the in situ PCR, a powerful technique which combines the high sensitivity of the conventional PCR with the ability to localise the cellular targets within a tissue, can be improved further by its association with the immunohistochemistry. This can be especially advantageous when the presence and localisation of the target sequence are investigated in the context of a tissue with its complex cellular organisation. #

To determine whether systemic immunization with plasmid DNA and virus vector against visna/maedi virus (VMV) would induce protective immune responses, sheep were immunized with VMV gag and/or env sequences using particle-mediated epidermal bombardment and injection of recombinant modified vaccinia Ankara. The results showed that immunization induced both humoral and cell-mediated responses prior to and after virus challenge. The vaccination protocol did not prevent infection, but immunization with the gag gene or a combination of gag and env genes resulted in significantly reduced provirus loads in blood and mediastinal lymph node, respectively. Provirus loads in lung and draining lymph node were unaffected, but p25 expression was undetectable in lungs of animals immunized with a combination of gag and env genes. Analysis of target tissues for lesions at post-mortem showed that immunization with the env gene caused a significant increase in lesion score, while the gag gene or a combination of gag and env genes had no effect. Inclusion of the ovine interferon-gene in the initial priming mixture had minimal effect on immune responses, provirus load, or lesion development, although it resulted in a decreased p25 expression in the lung. The results thus show that systemic immunization with gag or a combination of gag and env genes reduces provirus load in blood and lymphoid tissue, respectively whereas env immunization has no effect on provirus load but increased lesion development.

The quartz-crystal-microbalance (QCM) is a widespread analytical tool used in various fields such as chemistry, life-sciences, and soft-matter research. The QCM can detect mass and viscoelastic changes over its sensors surface. The sensor signal stems from the variation of the quartz resonant acoustic frequencies, called harmonics. To date, the operator selects and analyses one or few of these harmonics, therefore introducing an operator bias. This standard method also causes a massive loss of information owing to the discarding of the unanalyzed signals. Here, we develop a novel method for QCM data-analysis based on principal-component-analysis (PCA) that takes advantage from the whole harmonic dataset and avoids any operator bias. Such method is applied to two different molecular adsorption experiments. One is a standard benchmark experiment based on the streptavidin-biotin binding, widely used in the biosensing field. The other experiment is a case-study where an antigen-antibody binding is tested in presence of biological noise. The antigen of choice is the glial-fibrillary-acidic-protein (GFAP), recently discovered as a brain-damage biomarker. In both cases, we observed an improved sensitivity and limit-of-detection compared to the standard method. Our analysis further reveals a decreased, or nearly unvaried, noiselevel. The proposed PCA-based approach standardizes the QCM data-analysis procedure and improves its performance. This method, besides being a useful tool for the QCM community, can be customized to other sensing technologies whose response is made of several variables.

The local zeta regularization allows to treat local divergences appearing in quantum field theory; these are renormalized by pure analytic continuation (in the parameter of the regulator), with no need to remove or subtract divergent terms. This approach can be applied to the stress-energy tensor of the Casimir effect, and works as well on curved space-times. It is not useless to illustrate the power and elegance of this method in a simple case. In the present paper, our attention is devoted to the case of a neutral, massless scalar field in flat space-time, on a space domain with suitable (e.g., Dirichlet) boundary conditions. After a general outline of the local zeta method for the Casimir effect, we exemplify it in the typical case of a (Dirichlet) field between two parallel plates, or outside them. The results agree with the ones obtained by more popular methods, such as point splitting regularization. Connections with the existing literature on this subject are indicated.

Applying the general framework for local zeta regularization proposed in Part I of this series of papers, we compute the renormalized vacuum expectation value of several observables (in particular, of the stress-energy tensor and of the total energy) for a massless scalar field confined within a rectangular box of arbitrary dimension.
