Many years before he became recognised as the founder of the Czech-Moravian national opera, and l... more Many years before he became recognised as the founder of the Czech-Moravian national opera, and long before the successful performance of Jenufa in Prague and Vienna strengthened his position in the canon of Czech music and established his lasting international reputation, Leoš Janáček presented himself as a composer, organist, church musician, music critic – and, first and foremost, as a choirmaster and conductor. Except for Helfert, earlier musicologists have been so anxious to comment on Janáček’s later works and to tell the story about “the unrecognized genius”, that they have not paid much attention to the reception of his early activities. And, therefore, they have not realized that Janáček came to be the Janáček – the recognized genius – when he was barely thirty years old. In Brno, Janáček enjoyed great favour from the critics and the public, at first almost entirely Czech, from his first attempts as a conductor, performer, and composer. The reception of all of his artistic activities was conditioned by their specific functions in the Czech bourgeoisie culture that was becoming emancipated in Brno in the early 1870s – a culture that was in many respects late revivalist (in terms of the National Revival), ideologically oriented by the Old Czech political movement and defined by a combination of Roman Catholicism, Moravian patriotism, and Czech nationalism.

The importance of the literary analysis of musicological texts, of the examinations of “musicolog... more The importance of the literary analysis of musicological texts, of the examinations of “musicological poetics”, was stressed more than twenty years ago by Henry Kingsbury, and many remarkable results have been achieved in this field ever since, especially in the context of “new musicology”. But this cannot be said about Czech musicology, and particularly about the research into the poetics of Czech music historiography. Such lagging behind in this particular area naturally also hinders the development of the closely related sub-disciplines of Czech music historiography, namely its methodology and the history of music reception. I have chosen a methodological approach called neoformalism (David Bordwell and Kristin Thompson). The goal of the study is to analyze formal (i.e. stylistic and narrative) system of the movie, to put it in the context of Czechoslovakian and world cinematography, to enlighten how the movie produces the effect of defamiliarization and meanings. In this movie Vlacil represents baroque culture using some of baroque aesthetic principles.

Autor provedl analýzu 127 lidových pisni z etnografickeho regionu Horňacko (vydaných ve sbirce Zeman, Martin: Horňacke pisně, eds. Toncrova, Marta - Uhlikova, Lucie. Brno: Etnologický ustav AV CR, 2000). Cilem analýzy bylo ověřit a upřesnit dřive postulovane teze Holeho (1966) a Trojana (1980) o povaze tonin moravskeho hudebniho folkloru (zejmena z Horňacka). Na zakladě autorovy vlastni systematiky melodických paradigmat (vytvořene na zakladě Volkovy teorie) byla vyhodnocena cetnost jednotlivých melodických paradigmat (MP) a diatonických flexi. The paper deals with semantic (semio-pragmatic) analysis of one of the most significant works of ... more The paper deals with semantic (semio-pragmatic) analysis of one of the most significant works of the Czech interwar avant-garde music – Stafeta [The Relay], a Schoenbergian string quartet by Leos Janacek’s pupil Vilem Petrželka. The composition is likely to be included in the temporary wave of compositions reflecting and representing sports, such as Honegger’s Rugby, Half-time, La Bagarre by Bohuslav Martinů, Start and Stadion by Pavel Bořkovec and others. The temporary ontological status of The Relay was basically determined by three main imaginative factors – sports, collectivism and unbounded sexuality – which were strongly bounded in temporary social discourses. Just like in other temporary "sport compositions" (Bateman 2009), mainly the motional aspect of sport is represented here, using motorial music structures and other convenient methods of the late 19th century programmatic music. Music video is one of the dominant audio-visual forms of the last forty years. In this study, I t... more Music video is one of the dominant audio-visual forms of the last forty years. In this study, I try to address the art of music video through the analysis of one of the specifics of its early existence. In the British music videos of the early 1980s, mask, or rather the relationship between face and mask, was boldly thematized, mainly in connection with the depiction of evil in its various forms. In the videos in question, mask often functioned as a gate or a bridge to the area of human experience which could be called the “night world”: as a symptom or trigger of dissociation (from daydreaming to psychosis) and associated asocial behavior and immorality which disengages sexuality and unleashes violence. At the same time, mask represented an emblem that connected all these aspects of the “night world”.

The article is devoted to one of the first modern conceptions of a music museum within the framew... more The article is devoted to one of the first modern conceptions of a music museum within the framework of Czech or Czechoslovak ideas on musical museology. This conception originated with the musicologist Vladimír Helfert. The article follows the development of Helfert’s conception, which was realised primarily in the form of the Musical Archive of the Moravian Museum. The article also identifies the constant features of that conception. Helfert conceived of a music museum (“musical archive”) as a basic institution facilitating work on musical historiography, meaning the compiling, cataloguing, and protecting of musical artefacts (especially two-dimensional artefacts), and their presentation of to the expert community.

tak rozdílné – a přitom vnitřně příbuzné – fenomény, jakými jsou tvorba Leoše Janáčka či Ivy Bittové.

Two dominant lines can be recognized in the music-museological thought from the end of the 18th c... more Two dominant lines can be recognized in the music-museological thought from the end of the 18th century to the present day. Each of these two lines relates to the musealization of one of the two fundamental types of musical things, as well as to the respective types of music-museal institutions. The first line has reflected the musealization of musicalia as musical texts (i.e. textual records of music, texts about music, and texts otherwise connected with the existence of music). In this study, however, we deal with the second line of music-museological thought, the one that reflects musical instruments. The collecting and musealization of musical instruments are old and universal phenomena, which took on the specific form of musical instrument museums in the course of the 19th century. These institutions then became the centres of nascent organology.

The study summarizes the existing synthetic history of Moravian music of the 19 th and 20 th cent... more The study summarizes the existing synthetic history of Moravian music of the 19 th and 20 th centuries. It then puts forward a proposal on how to write a history of Moravian music in the current situation that would overcome the common reductionist approaches to musical Moravianism based on cultural (ethnic or national, formal, territorial) categories. Finally, the relevant musicological production of the past twenty years is selectively evaluated.

The Young Janáček and the German Music Criticism

The relations between Leoš Janáček and German musical culture – either in the Czech Lands or abro... more The relations between Leoš Janáček and German musical culture – either in the Czech Lands or abroad – deserve attention for many reasons. As part of the ongoing research on the early Janáček reception (1872–1888), we have focused on the attitudes of German musical critics towards Janáček. The German, in particular the Brno-based, press played an essential role in the process in question, this being a fact which nobody has taken into account yet. The suppression of national aspects fundamentally distinguished the way Brno-based German critics wrote about the young Janáček from the way Czech press in Brno, Prague and elsewhere reported on him. While the Czech reception of Janáček was nationalistic from the very beginning, the reception of Janáček by the Brno Germans suggests that the Liberal concept of German music, local and regional patriotism, and, of course, the music itself can not only disturb but even transcend national borders. But only to a certain extent. In other words, it seems that German critics tried to adopt those aspects of Janáček and his artistic activities which corresponded to their concept of Germanness (Deutschtum) and, in contrast tried to eliminate aspects of the difference.
