Noam Cook
I am a social philosopher drawing on diverse philosophical traditions in developing ways we might think and act more responsibly, especially concerning our currently unsustainable environmental, technological, and social practices. The areas of my research, publications, and consulting include: the essential interdependence of natural, technological, and human systems; innovation and adaptation through knowing and learning as cultural practices; and, applied social and environmental ethics. My work has been noted for productively challenging conventional wisdom in such areas.
I hold a Ph.D. from M.I.T., and BA and MA degrees from San Francisco State University. Following my doctoral work I spent two years on the research staff of Harvard Business School specializing in business ethics. I then returned to the Bay Area to join the philosophy faculty at San Jose State University in the heart of Silicon Valley, where I am currently Professor Emeritus. For ten years I was also a consulting researcher at Xerox PARC working on the role of know-how and values in R&D. Since 1997 I have been a member of the Grammy Award winning San Francisco Symphony Chorus.
