Mit dem dreizehnten Band der „Keilschrifttexte aus Assur literarischen Inhalts“ (KAL) erscheint n... more Mit dem dreizehnten Band der „Keilschrifttexte aus Assur literarischen Inhalts“ (KAL) erscheint nunmehr der dritte und letzte Teil der Edition divinatorischer Keilschrifttexte, die bei den Ausgrabungen der Deutschen Orient-Gesellschaft in Assur gefunden wurden und in das Vorderasiatische Museum zu Berlin gelangten. In diesem Band werden insgesamt 77 Tontafeln und Tontafelfragmente vorgelegt, die das Streben der Gelehrten in Assur belegen, die tiefere Bedeutung der Himmelsbewegungen zu erfassen. Neben einigen wenigen Manuskripten der astrologischen Omenserie Enūma Anu Ellil umfasst das Textkorpus vor allem zahlreiche mittel- und neuassyrische Texte zu Beobachtungen des Mondes, der Sonne, des Wetters sowie der Planeten und Fixsterne. Etliche interessante Textkommentare zu astrologischen Omina und eine große Tafel mit glossierten Omina zu unterschiedlichen Themen runden das Textmaterial ab. Auffällig ist das fast völlige Fehlen von Tafeln in babylonischer Schrift, wie sie bei anderen divinatorischen Texten aus Assur belegt sind. Die Mehrzahl der Texte werden zum ersten Mal der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemacht, zudem werden erstmals Handzeichnungen von einigen Texte vorgelegt, die der Fachwelt bereits durch frühere Publikationen in Umschrift bekannt waren. Ausführliche Konkordanzen und Indices, darunter ein Glossar der akkadischen Wörter und Indices von Zahlen, Monats-, Götter-, Dämonen-, Stern- und Planetennamen, sowie Abbildungen der Keilschrifttexte in Form von Handzeichnungen und Photographien schließen den Band ab.

The ambivalence of magic to serve both well-wishing and ill-wishing aims puts the practitioners ever at risk. This volume illuminates the strategies adopted to legitimise the practice of magic and analyses how these justifications are phrased and formulated in cuneiform texts, thereby revealing the underlying principles and unexplained axioms of using magic in the Ancient Near East.

This paper offers an editio princeps of HS 1898, a Kassite exercise tablet containing an extract ... more This paper offers an editio princeps of HS 1898, a Kassite exercise tablet containing an extract with ten liver omens followed by numeric tallies with the 10u-sign. The omens duplicate the fragmentary obverse of the Neo-Babylonian nīru-compendium BM 68454+69328 (ms. C in Starr 1993), the reverse of which is in turn replicated with omens known from the 15th tablet of the bārûtu-series Pān tākalti and the unedited fragment K 2030B from Nineveh. No conventional renderings of nīru, ‘the Yoke’, are found in HS 1898, as the Kassite student uses complicated lexical and graphical variations instead.

Chr. in Mesopotamien eine erstaunliche Karriere gemacht. Ohne klar erkennbare Vorläufer erschienen spätestens im ausgehenden 8. Jahrhundert v. Chr. Darstellungen dieses Dämons mit einer voll ausgebildeten Ikonographie und Texte mit einer mythologischen Geschichte, die seine Herkunft aus den Bergen, seinen Kampf gegen Winddämonen und seine zerstörerische Kraft schildern. Auf zahlreichen Statuetten, Amuletten und Formen, mit Köpfen an und auf Siegeln, Köpfen an Fibeln und vor allem zahlreichen Köpfen aus den verschiedensten Materialien wird Pazuzus Kopf, pars pro toto, mit einer distinktiven, klar erkennbaren Ikonographie dargestellt. Der Artikel identifiziert neuere Pazuzu-Darstellungen aus Grabungen in der südlichen Levante und diskutiert diese.

Zusammenfassung: Die altorientalische Vorzeichenkunde (Divination), lange als Zeichen für einen i... more Zusammenfassung: Die altorientalische Vorzeichenkunde (Divination), lange als Zeichen für einen imaginierten »orientalischen Aberglauben« angesehen, wird in der Altorientalistik mittlerweile häufig als »Wissenschaft« bezeichnet. Der dabei nicht aufgelöste Zwiespalt zwischen der Zeichenhaftigkeit des Alten Orients und der »Entzauberung« der modernen Welt wird hier zum Anlass genommen, die altorientalische Divination in ihren Grundzügen vorzustellen und aufzuzeigen, dass sie nicht nur ein erfolgreiches, mehrere Jahrtausende überdauerndes antikes Wissen(schaft)ssystem darstellt, sondern einen wichtigen epistemologischen Entwicklungsschritt, der das Entstehen der rechnenden Wissenschaft befeuert und so erst ermöglicht hat.

Among the numerous rituals performed at the Assyrian royal court, some state rituals stand out, a... more Among the numerous rituals performed at the Assyrian royal court, some state rituals stand out, as they are only found in Assyria and are written in Standard Babylonian interspersed with some elements of the Assyrian language. These include in particular the rites on the spring festivities in Assur and the tākultu 'banquet' rites. They provide deep insights into the Assyrian ideology and the role of the king in the Assyrian state. This article presents these rites with a special focus on the role of the king and discusses the question whether the king participated in these rites in persona, or whether he was present only in parts of the often long-lasting ritual sequences, or if these rites could be performed completely without the person of the king.

Dans l'ouvrage de base d'Eckart Frahm de 2011 1 , 24 commentaires sur la série SA.GIG sont répertoriés et sur le site web du Cuneiform Commentaries Project à Yale, 35 sont désormais listés, y compris des pièces discutables 2. A dire vrai, ces commentaires textuels sont géographiquement très clairement répartis : à l'exception d'un fragment de la ville assyrienne Ḫuzirīna (Sultantepe) 3 , tous les commentaires du SA.GIG proviennent de Babylonie. Cette distribution est frappante, d'autant plus qu'aucun commentaire textuel ayant trait au manuel de diagnostics et provenant de Ninive n'était connu à ce jour 4. Le fragment de commentaire K. 11939 publié ici est d'un grand intérêt, non seulement parce qu'il représente la première preuve de l'existence à Ninive d'un commentaire du SA.GIG, mais aussi parce que le nombre de commentaires portant sur les dernières tablettes de la série est comparativement plus petit ; c'est de plus le seul commentaire connu à ce jour de la 37 e tablette de la série SA.GIG, tablette qui n'est que partiellement conservée.
