Analysis of two major scientific literature databases suggests that the number of publications including books and journal articles dealing with chemical stratigraphy or isotopic stratigraphy grows at an exponential rate. Published geoscientific articles/books dealing with chemostratigraphy have unequivocally established that this technique can be relied upon when other conventional stratigraphic methods failed and/or have limitations. Among the different time slices of Earth’s history, the Phanerozoic, especially the Cenozoic, was intensively studied chemostratigraphically, as revealed by the number of publications. The plethora of literature has also resulted in highly varied terminologies that hinder clear understanding and development of the subject. A glossary of commonly used terminologies and intended meanings is presented in this chapter. The glossary is to be considered as a platform for further discussion and improvement rather than an exhaustive list.
