The World Health Organization defines female genital cutting as any procedure that removes or otherwise injures any part of a female’s external genitalia for non-medical reasons (1). Females are typically cut when they are young girls. Although different forms of cutting exist, the most aggressive forms involve extensive tissue removal followed by a procedure known as infibulation. To infibulate a female, the wounds produced by cutting are sewn up so that they heal to leave only a small opening for urine and menstrual blood. Female genital cutting brings no documented health benefits, and it can lead to serious health problems throughout life. These health problems include severe pain, bleeding, infection, psychological trauma, infertility, and a variety of obstetric complications that in the worst cases lead to death. Boggs draws upon years of practical experience in providing technical support and educational outreach on tree pest diagnostics and management to reexamine well-known Integrated Pest Management principles through the lens of modern arboriculture. The result is a simple 4-Step approach to pest management. From determining which pests matter to deciding when to pull the pesticide trigger, this presentation uses real-life case studies to educate participants on how to apply intelligent pest management concepts to meet client needs and expectations.

This program involved collaboration between OSU Extension agriculture and natural resources, 4-H youth development, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program – Education, Scioto County Soil and Water Conservation District, Findlay Manor Retirement Center, the 14th Street Community Center, and Scioto County Head Start to establish youth community garden programs. Underserved youth of Scioto County learned about community service, gardening and nutrition in this intergenerational program. Educators met with children at the garden three times a week in season where they planted, weeded, watered, raked, and tended to needs of the garden. Children learned how to plant a garden, learned the importance of growing their own food, the cost effectiveness of planting a garden, working together, team-building, nutrition, responsibility, confidence, the benefits of physical activity, following directions and a sense of community pride.
