Jeremy Butman
I have a Ph.D in philosophy from the New School for Social Research, where I concentrated on 19th and 20th century philosophy, especially Heidegger, Levinas, and Derrida. My dissertation, "Terrestriality: The Concept of the Planet and the Critique of Metaphysics," explores the intersections of politics, science and the environment by examining the transformation undergone by the concept of nature in 20th century continental philosophy. It was supervised by Simon Critchley, and approved by Richard J. Bernstein and Jay M. Bernstein. In future work I hope to continue analyzing the ways that themes in continental philosophy are developing in the 21st century, and am particularly interested in pragmatist approaches to global human rights and political ecology. I have published work in the New York Times, the Los Angeles Review of Books, the Kenyon Review, the Atlantic, the Brooklyn Rail, and elsewhere. I believe philosophy has special currency and urgency at this moment in history, and I'm motivated by the belief that academic research, in combination with philosophical communication to a broad audience, is essential to navigating a world in tumult.
