
Panos D Prevedouros
Dr. Panos Prevedouros is a Professor of Transportation and Chairman of the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Hawaii at Manoa where and he developed and manages UH’s Traffic and Transportation Laboratory. He’s a Subcommittee Chair of the Transportation Research Board (TRB), a unit of the National Academies. Prevedouros is a registered Professional Engineer in the European Union and a Court-qualified Traffic and Transportation Engineering expert in Hawaii and Illinois.
Prevedouros has expertise in urban road network management, incident management, traffic flow analysis, traffic signal optimization, intelligent transportation systems, demand forecasting and evaluation of transportation alternatives, sustainable infrastructure including transportation, energy, policies and regulation.
As of May 2016, Dr. Prevedouros has published 49 Technical Reports, 45 Academic Journal Papers, 43 Conference Refereed Papers, 33 Proceedings Papers, and co-authored the 2nd and 3rd editions of internationally adopted textbook Transportation Engineering and Planning (Prentice Hall, 1993 and 2001.) He has pioneered effective traffic solutions for Honolulu such as traffic underpasses and reversible flow lanes. He’s also developed a realistic plan for Hawaii’s energy future. Every improvement to H-1 freeway done between 2000 and 2014 has been analyzed and justified by Dr. Prevedouros. He’s an advisor to Attica Tollway, an expressway in Athens, Greece completed in 2004 with a centerline length that is longer than H-1, H-2 and H-3 combined. He designed several congestion mitigation solutions that Attica Tollway built.
Prevedouros has won several awards including Best Paper award on transportation noise from TRB in 1995, Outstanding Faculty award from the American Society of Civil Engineers-Hawaii in 1996, Van Wagoner award for Urban Underpasses from the Institute of Transportation Engineers in 2005, Freeway Operations Service award from TRB in 2009, and Best Paper on Transportation Sustainability award from the World Road Association in 2011.
Prevedouros was candidate for Honolulu mayor in 2008 (17% of the vote) and 2010 (almost 20%), and an advisor to Gov. Ben Cayetano during his 2012 mayoral campaign. The Honolulu Star Bulletin selected him as one of the “10 People Who Made a Difference in Hawaii in 2008.” He received an Honor Certificate for Public Service from the City Council of Honolulu in 2012.
He earned his PhD in Civil Engineering from Northwestern University, Evanston, IL (1990), his M.S. in Civil Engineering from Northwestern University, Evanston, IL (1987), and his Diploma in Engineering from Aristotle University, Thessaloniki, Greece (1984.)
