Heritage and Hollywood: Shaping human identity and gender from the Renaissance to the age of AI, 2025

The age of artificial intelligence (AI) is taking hold like an expanding universe and setting int... more The age of artificial intelligence (AI) is taking hold like an expanding universe and setting into motion the spawning of a new global culture. In parallel with these changes, humans interact with media messages steeped in visual and conversational language streamed across neural global platforms, with billions of humans participating. How is this tech-saturated environment impacting human and gender identity and aesthetics? This paper considers these issues, looking through the lens of the arts, from the past to the present and back again. A central theme is the personification of male and female symbolic characteristics. We see that arts and culture are an enduring and powerful influence across time and space, from Ancient Greece to the 21 st century, juxtaposing rapid change in AI technology with time-tested symbols and personas of gender identity. This paper offers a visual journey of cultural transmission that exemplifies this fascinating dichotomy to both reveal and question, especially given recent years that have witnessed a significant surge of gender and cultural wars, and a defining moment for cultural heritage.

This paper extends a companion paper on compilation for target platforms with hidden deterministi... more This paper extends a companion paper on compilation for target platforms with hidden deterministic hardware aliasing to generate aliasing as well as compensate for it, in so-called 'chaotic' compilation. That may be applied in encrypted computing to statistically hide any information inadvertently introduced by a human programmer. A prototype compiler implementing the technology currently covers all of ANSI C except longjmp/setjmp, and this paper sketches a proof that it protects against polynomial complexity attacks on runtime data.

Appropriately modifying the arithmetic in a processor causes data to remain in encrypted form thr... more Appropriately modifying the arithmetic in a processor causes data to remain in encrypted form throughout processing. That principle is the basis for the design reported here, extending our initial reports in 2016. The design aims to prevent insider attacks by the operator against the user. Progress and practical experience with the prototype superscalar pipelined RISC processor and supporting software infrastructure is reported. The privileged, operator mode of the processor runs on unencrypted data and has full access to all registers and memory in the conventional way, facilitating operating system and infrastructure development. The user mode has restricted access rights, as is conventional, but the security barrier that protects it is not based on access but on the fact that it runs through-and-through on encrypted data. It has been formally shown impossible for operator mode to read (or write to order) data originating from or being operated on in the user mode of the processor in this context. Cycle-accurate measures based on our stable toolchain for AES-128 encrypted computation on a 128-bit architecture, and RC2-64 on 64-bit, show 104-140 Dhrystone MIPS respectively for a nominal 1 GHz base clock, equivalent to a 433-583 MHz classic Pentium. This paper aims to alert the secure hardware community that encrypted computing is both possibly practical and theoretically plausible. 1. Other minor changes follow from encrypted working. Section 4 discusses changes to the RAM addressing hardware subsystem in particular. 2. Supervisor/operator are synonyms for 'unrestricted access' mode here.

Thanks to its position at the heart of the Mediterranean Sea, Malta has been a crossroads of civilisations whose traces are still visible today, leaving a particularly rich and varied cultural heritage, from megalithic temples to baroque palaces and Caravaggio masterpieces. Conveying all these different aspects within a single application, using textual, visual, and audio means, has raised many different issues about the planning and production of cultural content for mobile usage, together with usability aspects regarding design and distribution of a mobile app. In this paper, we outline all of these aspects, focusing on the design and planning strategies for a long-term user commitment and how to evaluate results for cultural mobile applications. We include experience of all the steps of developing a mobile app, information that is of possible benefit to other app developers in the cultural sector. Mobile apps. Usability. App design. Museums have used computers to develop exhibition interactives and games over the years. This pap... more Museums have used computers to develop exhibition interactives and games over the years. This paper provides early case study examples and historical context. During the 1980s, computer-based displays in museum exhibitions were largely standalone. In the 1990s, the availability of the web allowed networked interactivity. In the 2000s, access via smartphones became increasingly widespread, enabling mobile access from personal devices. As well as the early examples, the paper provides an overview of more recent developments. Online gaming, including serious games with the purpose of not just entertainment, but educational and cultural, has increased in prevalence. Preservation and access to these digital resources have their own unique issues, and these are reflected in the paper, especially for early examples.

Monitoring communities has become increasingly easy on the web as the number of visualisation too... more Monitoring communities has become increasingly easy on the web as the number of visualisation tools and amount of data available about communities increase. It is possible to visualise connections on social and professional networks such as Facebook in the form of mathematical graphs. It is also possible to visualise connections between authors of papers. In particular, Microsoft Academic Search now has a large corpus of information on publications, together with author and citation information, that can be visualised in a number of ways. In mathematical circles, the concept of the "Erd\H{o}s number" has been introduced, in honour of the Hungarian mathematician Paul Erd\H{o}s, measuring the "collaborative distance" of a person away from Erd\H{o}s through links by co-author. Similar metrics have been proposed in other fields, including acting. The possibility of exploring and visualising such links in arts fields is proposed in this paper.

Our ever-more digital societal context means that many are experiencing a digital life where reality and digitality blur in their distinction in many people's digital lives. This paper considers these aspects with respect to digital culture, especially in the context of heritage and museums. In particular, we look at developments since a previous 2014 paper by the authors and speculate on possible future developments. We focus especially on the reality check provided by the Covid-19 pandemic, that has accelerated societal digitality.

The last two years have seen research and development on a standards-compliant processor that shows that near-conventional speeds are attainable via this approach. Benchmark performance with the US AES-128 flagship encryption and a 1GHz clock is now equivalent to a 433MHz classic Pentium, and most block encryptions fit in AES's place. This summary article details how user data is protected by a system based on the processor from being read or interfered with by the computer operator, for those computing paradigms that entail trust in data-oriented computation in remote locations where it may be accessible to powerful and dishonest insiders. Multithreaded Discrete Event Simulation Language (MDESL) is a Verilog-like language and it contains a rich variety of interesting features such as the event-driven computation and shared-variable concurrency as well as the realtime feature. In this paper, we present the denotational semantics for MDESL based on UTP. First a discrete time semantic model is proposed to describe the observation-oriented semantics for MDESL. The observations record the change of variables of atomic actions over time. Then the healthy formulae are defined to denote all different behaviors of programs and the semantics of programs is expressed in terms of healthy formulae. In addition, we demonstrate some interesting properties about the MDESL programs expressing as algebraic laws and their proofs are supported by our formalized denotational semantics. The latest research in digital arts and new media are explored, with contributors ranging from established scholars to the new generation of research students who will lead the field tomorrow. Conference papers cover reconstructive archaeology, virtual museology, digital arts concepts and practice, immersive environments, and digital performance and music. Editors Alan Seal has recently worked as Head of Records and Collections Services in the Victoria and Albert Museum where he was responsible for the photographic services and archive in the museum and the automation and digitisation of the collections. He was previously Head of Collections Management in the National Art Library in the V&A. A librarian by training, he is particularly interested in user interfaces and online public access systems, both textual and multi-media. He has undertaken research into bibliographic standards in information systems and online library catalogues during a period at the Centre for Catalogue Research at the University of Bath. Suzanne Keene's background is in large-scale collection management in museums, including digital technologies. At University College London, she directed the MA in Museum Studies. Over almost two decades, the EVA London conference on Electronic Visualisation and the Arts has e... more Over almost two decades, the EVA London conference on Electronic Visualisation and the Arts has established itself as one of the United Kingdom's most innovative and interdisciplinary conferences. It brings together a wide range of research domains to celebrate a diverse range of interests with a specialised focus on visualisation. EVA London 2013 presents a wide spectrum of papers, presentations, demonstrations, an exhibition, and a research workshop. It is a forum where the sciences, arts, humanities and performance are equally at home. EVA London 2013 presents 66 papers and abstracts from 15 countries, by researchers inside and outside academia, from graduate artists, PhD students, seasoned industry professionals, established scholars and senior researchers, who value EVA London for its interdisciplinary community. This year, the conference features three keynote speakers: Prof. Steve DiPaola from Simon Fraser University (Canada); Prof. Linda Candy from the University of Technology (Australia); and Don McIntyre from the Glasgow School of Arts (United Kingdom). The proceedings has resulted from a highly selective peer review process, fitting as many excellent submissions as possible into the limited timetable of the conference.
