On examples of teaching introductory courses on digital design, the article summarizes four years... more On examples of teaching introductory courses on digital design, the article summarizes four years of the author's experience in using active teaching and learning methods in engineering education. The results of a number of pedagogical experiments showed that: 1) active strategies lead to higher attendance in lectures and a noticeable improvement in student performance; 2) reducing course content and slide presentations in favor of more active teaching style is greatly welcomed by students and has positive influence on learning outcomes; 3) "Concept Inventories" standards allow for defining the minimum course content and identifying gaps in conceptual understanding; and 4) a significant improvement of learning outcomes can be obtained using dedicated video mini-lectures available to students online. Streszczenie. Na przykładzie dwóch przedmiotów podstawowych z dziedziny techniki cyfrowej artykuł podsumowuje cztery lata doświadczeń autora oraz stan obecnej wiedzy dotyczącej aktywnych metod nauczania inżynierskiego. Rezultaty przeprowadzonych eksperymentów wykazują, że: 1) strategie aktywne prowadzą do zwiększenia frekwencji wykładowej i polepszenia wyników egzaminacyjnych; 2) rezygnacja z prezentacji slajdów na rzecz form aktywnych spotyka się z bardzo dobrym przyjęciem studentów i wpływa korzystnie na osiągnięcie założonych efektów kształcenia; 3) wykorzystanie istniejących standardów "Concept Inventories" pozwala wykryć luki w zrozumieniu podstawowych koncepcji; 4) znaczną poprawę efektów uczenia się można uzyskać udostępniając studentom dedykowane przedmiotowi krótkie wykłady wideo. Effective Learner-Centered Approach for Teaching an Introductory Digital Systems Course

In the Internet era, students have increasingly lost interest in traditional lectures; as a conse... more In the Internet era, students have increasingly lost interest in traditional lectures; as a consequence, their learning motivation and exam performance have decreased. The widespread adoption of learner-centered teaching methods that address this issue faces certain barriers, including: 1) the significant faculty effort necessary to prepare e-learning materials; 2) significant extra time required for active online communication with students; 3) student resistance to taking an active role in their education; and 4) lecturers' common belief that learner-centered teaching activities do not allow discussion of all the required topics. This paper presents a case study based on one offering of an introductory digital systems course taught with a combination of learner-centered strategies selected to overcome these barriers and improve student performance. These measures included: 1) improving the student-teacher relationship; 2) applying intriguing, inductive, and counterintuitive approaches to introducing new concepts; 3) adopting puzzle-based quizzes integrated with peer instruction; 4) using an audience response system; 5) replacing certain lectures with tutorials; 6) reducing course duration; and 7) using a graphics tablet. The results obtained demonstrate significant improvements in lecture attendance and in student performance. The author believes that the approach presented here can benefit other engineering educators in similar courses.

A concise description of an Internet database system for teaching and research information manage... more A concise description of an Internet database system for teaching and research information management, for historical reasons known as Student’s Electronic Card, is presented in this paper. The system was developed between 1998 and 2007 and successfully deployed at the Faculty of Electrical, Electronic, Computer and Control Engineering at the Technical University of Łódź, Poland. The system facilitates the most important activities of the community of 4,500 students and 450 faculty staff members. The core elements of the system are an Internet database and a number of specialised computer programs (terminals) with diverse functionality (teaching assignments, marking, student portal, cost analysis, etc). These terminals are used to enter, edit and retrieve data related to teaching, research and other activities at the faculty, and aids funds allocation, cost analysis and quality assurance. Fast texture synthesis with cellular neural network-based patch stitching

The proposed method utilizes Cellular Neural Networks (CNNs) for patch stitching, the most important operation of the synthesis procedure, expected to transform a patchwork made up of pieces of some small texture sample into a seamless, large texture. To fill in between-patch gaps, spontaneous pattern formation capabilities of CNNs are used. By using autoregressive filtering framework, we show that CNNs can be designed to generate complex stochastic fields that approximate stochastic and near-stochastic textures. The proposed texturesynthesis procedure is the following. After creating a patchwork from randomly drawn pieces of a small target texture, we fix boundary CNN conditions to edge pixels of all patches subject to stitching and execute an appropriately derived texture-approximating template. Finally, brightness of the resulting patterns is locally adjusted by executing a diffusion CNN template. As both processing steps involve pure CNN dynamics, the proposed patch-stitching method can be extremely fast if implemented in existing hardware (at the order of milliseconds for synthesizing several megapixel images).

The considered class of textures includes images, which are combinations of large-scale and fine-scale stochastic patterns. Accurate modeling of properties of such complex stochastic fields by means of a single 1-neighborhood CNN poses great difficulties. Therefore, we propose a method that exploits texture decomposition into two elements and involves an application of two networks, designated for performing distinct partial tasks. The first step of the proposed CNN-based texture generation procedure focuses on modeling of a coarse, large-scale textural pattern. The second step refines this pattern into a final image that is expected to closely imitate a target texture.

The key element for the task realization is an appropriate selection of template elements, which should provide a transformation of initial, random CNN state into a stable equilibrium, featuring desired perceptual properties. A template derivation procedure comprises two steps: linear CNN design, followed by a template-refinement procedure that involves nonlinear optimization. In addition, a procedure that extends CNN texture rendition capabilities into a realm of non-pure stochastic textures is proposed.
