Increasing demand for large scale and highly complex systems and applications, particularly with ... more Increasing demand for large scale and highly complex systems and applications, particularly with the emergence of pervasive computing and the impact of adaptive systems, introduces significant challenges for software development, as well as for user-machine interaction. Therefore, a perspective shift on software development and user-machine interaction is required. An amalgamation of model driven development and ontologies has been envisaged as a promising direction in recent literature. In this paper, we investigate this merged approach and conclude that a merger of both approaches, from formal modelling and knowledge representation perspective, on the one hand enables use of ontologies at run-time together with rules, prominently in terms of run-time reasoning, dynamic adaptations, software intelligibility, self-expressiveness, user involvement, and user situation awareness; and on the other hand at development time, prominently in terms of automated and incremental code generation, requirement adaptability, preservation of application knowledge, and validation and verification of structural and behavioural properties of the software. The core contribution of this paper lies in providing an elaborate and exploratory discussion of the problem and solution spaces along with a multidisciplinary meta-review and identification of complementary efforts in literature required to realise a merged approach.

In this paper, we discuss a method of composing a system from components with anonymous dependenc... more In this paper, we discuss a method of composing a system from components with anonymous dependencies. We make observations based on our experience with defining and implementing a composition mechanism for layered architectures. We propose a manner of specifying component descriptions by means of semantic-unaware properties, an application-domain independent formalism for describing the client-specific configuration requests in terms of desired properties, and a composition algorithm that works well in these conditions. Secondly, we argue that the composition method should be independent from the application domain, only architecture-style dependent. In order to permit the user to specify the application requirements in a higher-level abstraction that considers the domain-specific semantics, we recommend a two-phase composition process comprising the deployment of domain-specific front-end tools for the “translation” of requirements. We illustrate with an example of automatic composition of protocol stacks within DiPS [13], our Distrinet Protocol Stack framework for building network subsystems. The integration of an automatic composition module into DiPS has validated our approach as a simple but powerful tool for customizing software to support client-specific requirements.

In this article we present CCDL, a description language able to cover these three aforementioned categories.We define a composable component as an architectural entity described by an external contractual specification and a set of structural constraints for its variable internal configuration. The internal configuration of a composable component is not fixed, but is a target that must be composed from available components. This composition is driven by external requirements while complying with the fixed structural constraints. Such hierarchically composable components permit finetuned customization of component-based systems with a high degree of unanticipated variability. Our composition approach is architectural style specific and addresses multiflow architectures.The most important strength of CCDL is its ability to describe structural constraints of composable components (that represent composition targets), as flexible guidelines for their composition. The CCDL descriptions can be used by automatic composition tools that implement requirements driven compositions strategies.

We have introduced hierarchically composable components as means to achieve finetuned customization of component based systems. A composable component is defined by a fixed contractual specification of its external view and a set of structural constraints for its internal configuration. The internal configuration of a composable component is not fixed, but will be composed according to different requirements and has to comply with the structural constraints. This permits a high degree of unanticipated variability. Our approach is architectural style specific and addresses multiflow architectures. The goal of CCDL is to describe contractual specifications and structural constraints of composable components, as guidelines for their composition. CCDL descriptions can be used by automatic composition tools that implement requirements driven composition strategies.

To realise an Ambient Intelligence environment, it is paramount that applications can dispose of ... more To realise an Ambient Intelligence environment, it is paramount that applications can dispose of information about the context in which they operate, preferably in a very general manner. For this purpose various types of information should be assembled to form a representation of the context of the device on which aforementioned applications run. To allow interoperability in an Ambient Intelligence environment, it is necessary that the context terminology is commonly understood by all participating devices. In this paper we propose an adaptable and extensible context ontology for creating context-aware computing infrastructures, ranging from small embedded devices to high-end service platforms. The ontology has been designed to solve several key challenges in Ambient Intelligence, such as application adaptation, automatic code generation and code mobility, and generation of device specific user interfaces.

Many architectures have been proposed that implement context-sensitive service discovery, selection and composition, or that use a component-based software engineering methodology to facilitate runtime adaptation to changing circumstances. This paper explores live service mobility in pervasive computing environments as a way to mitigate the risk of disconnections during service provision in mobile ad hoc networks. It focuses on contextaware service migration and diffusion to multiple hosts to increase accessibility and expedite human interaction with the service. We analyze the basic requirements for service mobility and discuss an implementation on top of OSGi. Finally, we evaluate our approach to service mobility and illustrate its effectiveness by means of a real-life scenario.

Adaptive Context Management Using a Component-Based Approach

It is crucial for ubiquitous and pervasive computing because the context of a user or device serves as the source of information to adapt services. In this paper, we propose a modular context management system that is able to collect, transform, reason on and use context information to adapt services. By employing a component-based approach, we enable our infrastructure not only to support context-aware adaptation of services, but also to support adaptation of the context management system itself at deployment time and at runtime. This self-adaptation is based upon the service requirements and the current context of the device, such as the current resource usage or other devices in the neighborhood, resulting in an adaptive context management system for improved quality of service.

In this paper we evaluate and compare five commercial off-the-shelf platforms for building conver... more In this paper we evaluate and compare five commercial off-the-shelf platforms for building converged serviceoriented architectures in an ambient computing environment. To this end, we have identified several categories of requirements that support the always-connected digital lifestyle of the mobile user. Key requirements are providing convergence -joining the worlds of web services and telecom services -and offering context awareness in order to tailor services better to the user's environment, preferences and needs. Our evaluation shows that currently none of the investigated architectures completely fulfills the two aforementioned requirements in order to deploy a variety of future converged mobile and context-aware services. However, the resulting comparison can be used as a practical guideline for decision-makers to select a platform to build a service-oriented architecture adjusted to the specific requirements within their application domain.

In the suburban areas or during the night when the density of vehicles is low, multi-hop communication is only possible if (i) the vehicles store-carry-forward the messages or (ii) by using roadside units. Each of the solutions has its drawback. The former introduces delivery delay and the latter is an expensive solution. In this paper, we propose the Parked Vehicle Communication Model (PVCM) to use the parked vehicles along the roads to act as relay nodes and assist the communication in low density situations. We argue that the number and the distribution of parked vehicles is suitable to serve our purpose. We also show that the automotive battery can be utilized to keep the on-board unit running without draining all its energy.

Pervasive computing environments are populated with networked software and hardware resources pro... more Pervasive computing environments are populated with networked software and hardware resources providing various functionalities that are abstracted, thanks to the Service Oriented Architecture paradigm, as services. Within these environments, service discovery enabled by service discovery protocols (SDPs) is a critical functionality for establishing ad hoc associations between service providers and service requesters. Furthermore, the dynamics, the openness and the usercentric vision aimed at by the pervasive computing paradigm call for solutions that enable rich, semantic, context-and QoS-aware service discovery. Although the Semantic Web paradigm envisions to achieve such support, current solutions are hardly deployable in the pervasive environment due to the costly underlying semantic reasoning with ontologies. In this article, we present EASY to support efficient, semantic, context-and QoS-aware service discovery on top of existing SDPs. EASY provides EASY-L, a language for semantic specification of functional and non-functional service properties, as well as EASY-M, a corresponding set of conformance relations. Furthermore, EASY provides solutions to efficiently assess conformance between service capabilities. These solutions are based on an efficient encoding technique, as well as on an efficient organization of service repositories (caches), which enables both fast service advertising and discovery. Experimental results show that the deployment of EASY on top of an existing SDP, namely Ariadne, enhancing it only with slight changes to EASY-Ariadne, enables rich semantic, context-and QoS-aware service discovery, which furthermore performs better than the classical, rigid, syntactic matching, and improves the scalability of Ariadne.

Ant algorithms already demonstrated their usefulness in today's multi-agent systems. This paper i... more Ant algorithms already demonstrated their usefulness in today's multi-agent systems. This paper introduces a meta-scheme describing a high-level behavior for ant agents in a graph environment. Application of this meta-scheme makes the ant agents repeatedly visit the nodes in the graph that constitutes their environment. The main focus of the meta-scheme is on its reusability. The meta-scheme is used/extended by filling in the elements that decide about routing and cloning, as well as the retrieval and writing of information on information spaces attached to the nodes of environment. Two sample applications of the metascheme are described, called the "Flooding Walk Role" and "Emitting Walk Role" respectively. The research team applied these two applications of the meta-scheme to a case for communication networks and a case for manufacturing control. Finally, a conclusion is made on the utilization and the reusability of the proposed metascheme.
