Documenting knowledge on distribution and use of medicinal plants by different ethnic groups and at spatial scale on a single platform is important from a conservation planning and management perspective. The sustainable use, continuous practice, and safeguarding of traditional knowledge are essential. Communication of such knowledge among scientists and policy makers at local and global level is equally important, as the available information at present is limited and scattered in Nepal. There are number of publications that documented the distribution of orchids in Nepal. But the resource assessment method of epiphytic orchids has not been developed yet which has created difficulty in the quantification of such orchids which are in trade and potential for trade. Thus, this paper intends to develop assessment method that enables government agencies, researchers and resource managers to quantify the epiphytic orchids which ultimately supports the conservation and management of orchids.

With the industrialization of traditional medicine and globalization of the medicinal plant trade, the bulk of Nepalese medicinal plants are exported to India, China, and beyond [10-13], where they are the subject of increasing interest in the herbal curative system [14]. This high demand may be due to the significant efficiency [15] of bioconstituents in modern medicine, the proximity to centuries-old systems (Ayurveda, Tibetan Medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine) [16] or their use in the preparation of aromatic products, cosmetics, plant fibers, herbal dyes, food flavoring [17]. From 11,971 species of flowering and non-flowering plants, including fungi and lichens [18] more than 2,300 have medicinal value [19] while 300 are traded and exported from Nepal [20].

However, data about MAP consumption, volumes of trade and levels of demand are inadequate. In Nepal, there is a general lack of reliable trade data that constrains the estimation of total amount of MAPs in trade. This study aims to assess current trends in volume and value of MAP commodities exported from Nepal and identify the major destination countries. We mainly used formal trade data of Nepalese MAP products over the last 10 years (2005 to 2014) from the repository of UN COMTRADE database accessed via TRADE MAP. Results indicated that the export value of MAP products increased from USD 27.49 million in 2005 to USD 60.09 million in 2014 (mean for the last 10 years being USD 39.34 million) and this increment is primarily due to increase in price, as the trade volume follows decreasing trend over the same periods. In Nepal, 363 species of orchids are organized into 97 genera. Orchids fall under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) Appendix II but do not fall under the legal protection of any existing national legislation. Habitat loss, forest destruction and degradation and over-exploitation have posed threats to the conservation of orchids in Nepal. The current study aims to document the orchids and estimate the stock of Dendrobium denudans and Dendrobium eriiflorum in a few potential locations of Rolpa district. A total of 36 species were documented in the surveyed 17 Village Development Committees (VDCs). Among them, 31 species were identified up to species level, two species up to generic level and the remaining three were unidentifed.
