Licklider Transmission Protocol - Motivation

This document describes the motivation for the development of the Licklider Transmission Protocol... more This document describes the motivation for the development of the Licklider Transmission Protocol (LTP) designed to provide retransmission-based reliability over links characterized by extremely long message round-trip times (RTTs) and/or frequent interruptions in connectivity. Since communication across interplanetary space is the most prominent example of this sort of environment, LTP is principally aimed at supporting &quot;long-haul&quot; reliable transmission in interplanetary space, but it has applications in other environments as well. In an Interplanetary Internet setting deploying the Bundle protocol, LTP is intended to serve as a reliable convergence layer over single-hop deep-space radio frequency (RF) links. LTP does Automatic Repeat reQuest (ARQ) of data transmissions by soliciting selective- acknowledgment reception reports. It is stateful and has no negotiation or handshakes.

Collaboration among scientists in research projects and anzong engineers in the development of co... more Collaboration among scientists in research projects and anzong engineers in the development of complex systems has become the ride rather than the exception. While this collaboration can occur inside a single organization or at a particular location the ubiquity of the internet and information technology tools has permitted collaboration across long distances to become cominon. We describe Irere our project and plans to develop methods, s o f i a r e tools, and infiastructure tools to address challenges relating to geographically distributed sofware development. SpeciJically, this work is creating an infrastructure that supports applications working over distributed geographical and organizational domains and is using this infrastructure to develop a tool that supports project development using risk nzanagement and analysis techniques where the participants are not collocated, This work builds upon successful risk assessment methods and tools. i t is lioped that this system will aid scientists and engineers better perform the risk management process through enabling distributed participation. Additionally it is important to provide usable human-computer interfaces and data analysis tools so that meaningfiul decisions arise from the injormation.

Every mission into deep space has a communications system to carry commands and other information... more Every mission into deep space has a communications system to carry commands and other information from Earth to a spacecraft or to a remote planet and to return scientific data to Earth . Communications systems are central to the success of space missions. Large amounts of data need to be transferred (for example, nearly 25 TB in 2013 concerning the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO)), and the demand will grow in the future [1] because of the employment of more sophisticated instruments that will generate more data. This will require the availability of high network transfer rates. Satellite systems already have to cope with difficult communication challenges: long round trip times (RTTs); the likelihood of data loss due to errors on the communication link; possible channel disruptions; and coverage issues at high latitudes and in challenging terrain. These problems are magnified in space communications characterized by huge distances among network nodes, which imply extremely long delays and intermittent connectivity. At the same time, a space communications system must be reliable over time due to the long duration of space missions. Moreover, the importance of enabling Internet-like communications with space vehicles is increasing, realizing the concept of extended Future Internet, an IP (Internet Protocol) pervasive network of networks including interplanetary communication , where a wide variety of science information values are acquired through sensors and transmitted.
