I am a researcher in Computer Science; my research topic is distributed systems (i.e., interconnected computers working together). My two current projects are:

• Understanding replication and consistency.
• Simple proof techniques for concurrent programs.

An employee of INRIA, the French National Institute for Computer Science and Control Science, I am part of Regal, a joint group between INRIA and LIP6.

I previously led the Cambridge Distributed Systems Group (Camdis) at Microsoft Research Cambridge (MSRC). Before that I led INRIA's SOR group.

I am the past chair of EuroSys, the European professional society in Computer Systems, which I was instrumental in creating. EuroSys is is the European chapter of SIGOPS.

This report documents the program and the outcomes of Dagstuhl Seminar 12271 “AI meets Formal Sof... more This report documents the program and the outcomes of Dagstuhl Seminar 12271 “AI meets Formal Software Development”. This seminar brought together researchers from formal methods and AI. The participants addressed the issue of how AI can aid the formal software development process, including modelling and proof. There was a pleasing number of participants from industry and this made it possible to ground the discussions on industrial-scale problems.

The idea is to have enough (meta-) proof information (ie user intent, lemmas used, points of failure and ways of recovery, various proof attempts [sub-] trees, etc.), in order to be able to do meta-level reasoning about proofs, in particular for proof reuse, but also for proof maintenance and transferability to non-expert users. Three papers were ranked clearly above the others and three others were discussed in more depth between the chairs. As a result, the chairs proposed three papers for acceptance, and two more for discussion, one of which was accepted by the PC meeting.

The SOS is object-structured; all services and communication is expressed in terms of passive objects with procedural interfaces. Resources are accessed by clients via a local (to the client) proxy object. The possibly distributed or group nature of the resource is hidden behind the proxy interface.
