We report on the reproductive biology of southwestern Atlantic wreckfish. Females mature first at 77.9 cm total length (TL) (10.4 years) and all are mature by 90 cm TL (15.2 years). Males mature first at 74.9 cm (9 years) and all are mature by 80 cm TL (10.9 years). The wreckfish is a gonochoristic multiple spawner and the gonadal cycle is synchronized at the population level. Spawning occurs from late July to early October along the continental slope (<300 m). Ovarian fecundity varies from 3 to 11.9 million (135–311 oocytes×g−1) and increases exponentially with length. Spawning at western boundary current systems, maintained by homing of adults, is a basic requirement for self-sustaining populations of this species.

A raia Myliobatis goodei foi identificada segundo a descrição original dessa espécie (Garman, 1885), enquanto Myliobatis sp. foi o morfotipo denominado de "DL" por Levy e Conceição (1989) e que segundo esses autores é uma espécie cuja identidade taxonômica ainda não foi determinada. Rhinoptera brasiliensis foi identificada segundo Bigelow e Schroeder (1953), Squatina guggenheim segundo Vooren et al. (2003), e as demais espécies segundo Figueiredo (1977).

(ISBN 85--99751--01--8) A cabeça dos tubarões-martelo possui em ambas suas faces laterais uma extensão rígida, plana e perpendicular ao eixo do corpo (Figura 6.1). Os olhos e as fossas olfativas são situ-ados nas extremidades laterais dessas extensões da cabeça (Figuras 6.1 e 6.2). Essa posição dos olhos aumenta o campo de visão do animal, e a grande distância entre as fossas olfati-vas aumenta a capacidade de seguir rastros de cheiro na coluna d&#39;água. As duas extensões laterais e a porção da cabeça entre estas constituem em conjunto a estrutura denominada de cefalofólio, que tem esse nome porque ela tem a forma de um aerofólio. Species distribution models (SDMs) are tools to obtain habitat suitability maps based on historical species occurrences and environmental variables. Those maps can be used to restrict fishing grounds or to assist in planning and reserve selection. This is especially important for species at risk of extinction. We developed SDMs for five endangered elasmobranch species, namely Squatina guggenheim, S. occulta, Rhinobatos horkelii, Galeorhinus galeus, and Mustelus schmitti, using Boosted Regression Trees. Data from 1,704 bottom trawls carried out between 1972 and 2005 as part of research surveys on the southern Brazilian shelf between 28°36 0 S and 33°45 0 S, combined with satellite imagery and environmental atlases, were used in the models. Based on 10-fold cross-validation statistics, all models had a reasonable performance, though S. guggenheim models had an excellent discrimination (AUC [ 0.9) and R. horkelii models had just a fair discriminatory power (AUC 0.7-0.8). Except for R. horkelii, all models showed good association between observed and predicted occurrences (PBC [ 0.5). Squatina guggenheim models provided the greatest explained deviance (49-54%), whereas R. horkelii models the smallest (14-17%). Models' predictions were consistent with the current knowledge of all species. Moreover, those models made reasonable predictions using the great spatial and temporal coverage of satellite data.

The lakes and reservoirs morphometry as surface shape, surface area, underwater form, depth, and the irregularity of their shoreline have a major impact on turbulence, water stratification, sedimentation and resuspension, and the extent of littoral-zone wetlands that determine lake and reservoir functioning. The degree of irregularity is most frequently estimated from the shoreline development factor that reflects the extent to which the measured shore length is greater than the length of the circumference of a circle of an area equal to that of the lake. As indicated by Assireu et al. (2004), this index is not able to detect high-resolution geomorphologic features. In this work we present a dynamical morphometric index, based on recognition pattern techniques, which enable us to identify, for each wind direction, what are the reservoir regions not subject to wind-induced turbulence.
