Aquaculture, in addition to agriculture is one of the most sought after occupations for the peopl... more Aquaculture, in addition to agriculture is one of the most sought after occupations for the people of coastal regions of India. These farmers depend on the yield generated from aquaculture farming for their livelihood. However, due to various environmental as well as social factors, the water quality in these farms deteriorates and leads to untimely death of fishes. Such a scenario leads to heavy losses to the farmers. These farmers follow traditional approaches in measuring water quality which is time-consuming and inefficient. They are unable to get any warnings to take measures to save their fishes from getting deteriorated. This paper presents design and development of an Internet of Things(IoT)-based framework which measures water quality in aquaculture farms and provides alerts to the farmers so that they can take necessary precautions and save themselves from hefty losses.

In this paper, design and development of a real-time water quality monitoring framework for aquac... more In this paper, design and development of a real-time water quality monitoring framework for aquaculture ponds has been presented. This wireless sensor network framework consists of sensor nodes to measure water pH, dissolved oxygen, water temperature, atmospheric temperature and pressure using sensors and transmit this information to the data storage and analysis module. Alerts on physico-chemical parameters of water are made available to the farmers through designed mobile application. The framework has been deployed in two testbeds, namely end-user shrimp farm and an institution pond, for the evaluation of system feasibility and robustness. Statistical analysis of the data collected through the system deployed in these testbeds was conducted, and it was observed that these physico-chemical parameters of water are within range, which depicts that the pond water is suitable for the growth of shrimp and fish. Feedback collected from the end-users (local aquaculture farmers) conveys acceptability of the system by them. Learnings and research challenges observed during system deployment have also been enumerated.

Th... more Most of the state-of-the-art research papers have discussed only common abnormality detection. This proposed work aims to diagnose congenital heart defect (CHD) in new-born babies. By monitoring different physiological parameters in neonates, CHD in neonates is detected in early stage. The designed WBAN environment is three-tier architecture. This three-tier architecture is comprised of entities as body sensor, hub, base station, and diagnosing server. Each of the processes is segregated in each tier such as data aggregation, authentication, channel selection, and classification. IEEE 802.15.6 standard is used in WBAN by which identification of the criticality and allocation of high priority will be done. Then, hub prefers the best channel to transmit the sensed reports without any packet loss. The sensed data reaches diagnosing server from the base station. Diagnosing server is responsible to classify the sensed data according to its severity (normal and critical). Early diagnosis of CHD in neonates using WBAN is not addressed in any of the previous works; so, this paper presents an efficient solution for diagnosing CHD.

Aiming at the sugarcane crop, a multi-parameter monitoring system is designed based on low-power ZigBee wireless communication technology for system automation and monitoring. Real time data is collected by wireless sensor nodes and transmitted to base station using zigbee. Data is received, saved and displayed at base station to achieve soil temperature, soil moisture and humidity monitoring. The data is continuously monitored at base station and if it exceeds the desired limit, a message is sent to farmer on mobile through GSM network for controlling actions. The influence of sesame phyllody, an important phytoplasmal disease of sesame, on VAM colonizatio... more The influence of sesame phyllody, an important phytoplasmal disease of sesame, on VAM colonization was studied in the cultivars Rajeshwari and Gowri, uprooted from the same field locations. Both healthy and infected plants of the 2 sesame varietiesexhibited mycorrhizal colonization. The percentage VAM colonization was more in Rajeshwari than Gowri, and in both cultivars the colonization was greater in infected plants than healthy plants. Vesicles and mycelium were associated with all types of plants but arbuscules were only present in infected plants of both cultivars. Glomus fasciculatum and Sclerocystis rubiformis were observed in all 4 types of plants. Glomus mosseae was associated with healthy and diseased plants of Rajeshwari only and Acaulospora morrowea was recorded in the rhizosphere soil of healthy plants of the Gowri cultivar.

Activity Recognition and Classification (ARC) have enabled growth of many automated applications ... more Activity Recognition and Classification (ARC) have enabled growth of many automated applications like recommender services, old age assistance, health monitoring, security and surveillance etc. This becomes possible due to advancement of technology in wearable devices and smartphones. The small size, easy availability of various relevant sensors, ever decreasing cost, ability to monitor continuously and handy to use features have made them prominent devices to use in ARC. In this work, we provide a comprehensive survey on ARC using smartphones and wearable sensors. The work begins with the understanding of the ARC process followed by description of inertial sensors present in the smartphones and wearables. It covers the various feature extraction methods and the models used in traditional methods and the trending deep learning based methods. It is observed that, performance of any ARC method largely depends on number of sensors, classification technique, kind of device and placement and orientation of the device among many other parameters considered in the work. In our study, we present a detailed comparison of work done in this area considering ten such important parameters, which, to the best of our knowledge, is the first of its kind of surveys. Finally, we present ten challenges in this area and provide prospective dimensions that can be explored in future research.

Inside the agribusiness space, the soil classification is a crucial work that gives good classification results for different soil types. The taxonomy provides an excellent rating for inherent soil elements. This work investigates the accuracy of three well-known classification models like K-Nearest Neighbor (k-NN), Naive Bayes (NB) and, Decision Tree (DT) using a publically available agricultural soil dataset. Post investigation, an Ensemble Classifier (EC) is proposed by fusing the above mentioned three classifiers. The experimental results indicate that EC has the highest accuracy of 84% in comparison to the NB (72.90%), k-NN (73.56%), and DT (80.84%). So it performs better than the other classifiers. The results infer that EC would be useful for accurate classification of soil types in the agricultural domain.

A few of the research issues faced by researchers' are designing low cost and low power motes, network topologies, deployment strategies, and energy efficient data routing protocols. A lot of research has already been done in each of the mentioned areas individually but only a few research articles or literature discusses research work about two or more areas collectively. The existing literature explores the simulation work only and a few has given the description of complete design, development and deployment of a WSN. This paper presents the detailed discussion in form of literature review of each aspect of WSN design starting from mote design and ending to associated application. Since a lot of applications are using WSNs for monitoring purpose, this paper focuses on one of the most crucial application for livelihood i.e. crop production or agriculture domain.

It is usually observed in the digital consumer market where cell phones are replaced by smart phones and internet tablets. More functionality is brought into one single purpose system for giving the enhanced services to the users. The Linux Kernel based operating system is used in most of these electronic devices. The biggest protests about Linux are the size and speed at which it boots. The users expect these devices to have fast boot up time and a small amount of memory. In multiple real-time systems, many Linux versions are used that need a large level of accessibility and negligible downtime when updating systems. This results in advancing Linux boot time and size optimization. The objective of this paper is to keep the researchers up to date about Linux Optimization techniques. First of all, this paper survey the various boot time optimization techniques and size reduction techniques with respect to conventional Linux system. It then implements the efficient size optimization technique for ARM based Raspberry Pi board. The findings reveal that the operating system image builds after size optimization technique is 25% lighter in size than original image and boot-up time diminishes by half.

To adapt to the requirements of a particular embedded application, the embedded operating system can be customized manually or automatically. In this paper, the standard process for customizing the CPU scheduling policy in an open source Linux operating system (OS) has been discussed. The paper also focuses on the design & development of the CPU scheduling customization framework for ARM based Raspberry Pi 3, tagged as SchedCust, that allows the CPU scheduler to be configured to execute a particular scheduling policy. The SchedCust framework helps the users to automatically develop the scheduling policy specific custom operating system (OS) for the selected processor. The experimental results have been computed for FIFO and RR scheduling policy, with respect to four distinct parameters. The data collected from user testing showed that the manual process of developing a custom OS takes more time and efforts when compared to the automated process.

These tools are utilized to calculate the execution performance of the Linux operating system. This paper provides a brief overview of different Linux performance monitoring tools. It then tests the various discussed tools on ARM based Raspberry Pi (Rpi) board. The experimental results are obtained with respect to the python script to monitor the real time environmental temperature and humidity. The performance of Raspberry Pi based monitoring system is estimated in view of parameters such as response time, context switches, memory and CPU usage etc.
