As the nation's health care system enters the 21 st century, increasing awareness of emerging industry trends incorporating the patient as an informed partner in personal and community health issues are subsequently exposing the need to improve information infrastructure normalization and accessibility for health system interactions. Broad information technology trends towards Internet economies and XML data standards are also driving the normalization of diverse data systems, while over 60 biomedical vocabularies express specific knowledge domain applicability and information capabilities. Successful exploitation and leveraging of these trends can reduce health care costs by increasing population health awareness involvement and improving the productivity and quality of care delivery, thereby leveraging national economic and workforce productivity. Realization of these goals can be extensively enhanced by development of advanced "drill-through" biomedical knowledge representation architectures capable of incorporating data resources and vocabularies into domain, group and user interaction perspectives. These knowledge applications will normalize and associate health system information resources, processes, workers and patients into dimensional structures for optimized knowledge perspective representation and navigation. Problem Statement. Deploying such sophisticated knowledge applications will require understanding the knowledge model dimensional relationships between component hierarchies, including structural dimensionalities, commonalities, granularities and computational complexities for optimal application performance. Aggregate meta-modeling of these relationships requires new approaches to identify and rank associative comprehensibility of model architectures for optimized knowledge application product development. AAFAXIS has developed technology and architectural approach specifications for modeling biomedical informatics vocabularies as meta-models normalizing and associating the processes, resources, workers and users characteristics within specific health industry application domains. To validate optimum knowledge application architectures and fund the corporation for product development, AAFAXIS must have a clear understanding of optimum model configurations within large-scale associative relevancy discriminatory sets currently well beyond existing modeling tools. This research proposal to the National Health Information Infrastructure focus area of the Advanced Technology Program at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, United States Department of Commerce describes the background and applied research plan for biomedical knowledge modeling study, introduces the investigative team and research subcontractors , and discusses the potential economic impact of project success attainment levels. Background. Biomedical knowledge architectures like NIH MeSH and UMLS map the broad upper conceptual layers of biomedical vocabularies and terms into prospective meta-model knowledge schemata. Unfortunately, the resulting model schemata exhibit limited associative knowledge representation characteristics and detail capacities structurally insufficient to support the granularity requirements of complex knowledge representation architectures. Advanced knowledge architectures are extended by expressing the lower conceptual layers and definitions of the vocabulary schemata incorporated within candidate models, increasing the granularity and precision of conceptual knowledge model associative dimensionality. However, the complexity and computational density issues involved in modeling candidate knowledge schemata potentially containing diverse information resources against the associative hierarchal granularity of various biomedical vocabulary schemata components limits our ability to investigate and optimize potential meta-model architectures.

Conceptual Biology Research Supporting Platform: Current Design and Future Directions, 2008

Current computational study on conceptual biology focuses on hypothesis generation from biomedical literature. Most of the algorithms for hypothesis generation are dedicated to produce one type of hypothesis called pairwise relation by interacting with certain search engines such as PubMed. In order to fully realize the potential of conceptual biology, we designed and implemented a conceptual biology research support platform that consists of a set of interrelated information extraction, mining, reasoning, and visualizing technologies to automatically generate several types of biomedical hypotheses and to facilitate researchers in validating generated hypotheses. In this chapter, we provide detailed descriptions of the platform architecture, the algorithms for generating novel hypotheses, and the technologies for visualizing generated hypotheses. Furthermore, we propose a set of computational procedures and measures for evaluating generated hypotheses. The experimental analysis of the proposed hypothesis generation algorithms is also presented.

Specifically, some method embodiments include steps for accessing a system for extracting relationships and determining a relationship rule defining a relationship among a plurality of phrases and a plurality of concepts stored in the system for extracting relationships. Such embodiments further provide steps for parsing a plurality of documents in a data repository according to the relationship rule and generating a hypothesis comprising a previously unknown combination of phrases and concepts being at least partially determined from the parsed plurality of documents. Various embodiments also provide a step for presenting the hypothesis to a user so as to indicate the previously unknown combination

These important links with historical ecology are the written and illustrated record of man's domination of the planet. They are contained in the rare and unindexed first-hand accounts of our ancestors. Though the record is diffuse and sometimes misleading, it is often rich and incredibly insightful. While the current condition of these works is an impediment to their scientific study, a pilot project has converted this record into a machine readable, searchable, and speakable form . Scientists and librarians at Louisiana State University, have successfully converted B. F. French's 1846, five volume, Historical Collections of Louisiana into an electronic text. Reformatting rare materials broadens access to them for all scholars and students. While electronic imaging does not take the place of traditional conservation procedures it does lessen use of the original documents thus prolonging their present condition and future life. Hill Memorial Library, the home of Special Collections at LSU, is the location of the "Electronic Imaging Laboratory." Working with a local company, Key Systems Incorporated, project staff designed systems that would scan, digitize, do optical character recognition, index, provide images, and printed output of rare books, manuscripts and photographs from the collections.

Various methods provide a system, method, and computer program product for sorting and/or selectively retrieving a plurality of documents in response to a user query. More particularly, embodiments are provided that convert each document into a corresponding query language model. The language models are used to define a vector space having dimensions corresponding to the terms in the documents and in the user query. The language models are mapped in the vector space. Each of the documents is then ranked. wherein the ranking is based at least in part on the position of the mapped language models in the vector space, so as to determine a relative relevance of each of the plurality of documents to the user query.
