Intestinal parasites, especially intestinal worms, or soil-transmitted helminths (STH), significantly contribute to gastrointestinal diseases worldwide. Intestinal worm infections occur in rural and urban populations, especially in people who have the habit of eating with dirty hands, using unhygienic toilets, and consuming contaminated food, water, or soil. Fresh vegetables are a means that support parasitic intestinal infections, especially for traders who must be able to prevent intestinal worm contamination in fresh vegetables. Consumption of raw vegetables can be a source of intestinal worm infection, thereby increasing the prevalence of foodborne diseases. This type of research is analytic observational with a cross-sectional study design. Samples in the form of fresh vegetables were taken from fresh vegetable traders in Pakusari District, J...

Nearly 35 million cases and one million deaths over the nine months of the COVID-19 pandemic have... more Nearly 35 million cases and one million deaths over the nine months of the COVID-19 pandemic have been reported worldwide. Africa and some countries with endemic parasitic infections had a low incidence of COVID-19. By contrast, the United States and several European countries, having a non-endemicity of parasitic infections, recorded a high incidence of COVID-19. Some parasites have an immunomodulatory mechanism that can induce an immune tolerance state in the infected persons by balancing pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory responses. Emerging reports also stated that COVID-19 and helminth co-infections may have more hidden outcomes than predictable ones. Hence, the aim of this literature review is to show and identify that an increase in the number of regulatory immune cells due to the immunomodulatory role of a pre-existing parasitic infection could reduce the risk of COVID-19. This study explored the existing literature to determine the role of parasitic infections in modula...

Most of the complications of malaria such as anaemia, thrombocytopenia, jaundice, and renal failure are commonly found in Plasmodium falciparum malaria, but the incidence of severe and complicated vivax malaria tends to be increasing. We report two cases of severe Plasmodium vivax malaria from Malang, a nonendemic area in Indonesia. Patients exhibited anaemia, thrombocytopenia, jaundice, renal disturbance, and melena. Microscopic peripheral blood examination and amplification of parasite 18s rRNAby polymerase chain reaction showed the presence ofP. vivax and absence of P. falciparum. All patients responded well to antimalarial drugs. 1.
