The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of high non-HDL-C level and to explore factors associated with non-HDL-C among northeastern Thai adults. A crosssectional study was carried out among 444 Thai adults aged 35 to 60 years living in Khon Kaen Province, Northeastern Thailand. A cluster random sampling was used to select subjects. The lipid blood parameters measured were total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). The level of non-HDL-C was calculated by subtracting HDL-C from TC. The Pearson’s correlation was used to examine the correlation between non-HDL-C levels with metabolic risk factors and multiple logistic regressions were used to define factors associated with non-HDL-C. The results showed that the mean age of the parti...

Calcium supplements may be needed to achieve the dietary reference intake (DRI). Dietary calcium and supplemental calcium intake for calcium balance might be necessary. However, increasing evidence shows that calcium supplementation may enhance soft tissue calcification and cause cardiovascular diseases. Calcium requirement during pregnancy is markedly increased. If calcium supplementation depends on the dietary style of a region, then the adequacy of dietary calcium intake may guide the calcium supplementation. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted among pregnant women who attended prenatal care at Srinagarind Hospital, Khon Kaen University. We used semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire (SFFQ) to evaluate the amount of daily calcium intake, and 3 days food record to assess the SFFQ reliability. We used the INMUCAL-N V.3.0, based on the Thai food composition table for nutritional calculation. Results: Among 255 recruited pregnant women, the mean daily dietary calcium intake was 1,256.9 mg/day (SD: 625.1) and up to 1,413.4 mg/day (SD: 601.3) in daily milk consumed group. Based on Thai DRI for pregnant women, with 800 mg/day as adequate intake of calcium, 74.9% had adequate calcium intake, and majority of them had milk daily. Conclusion: The majority of pregnant women in a province of Northeast Thailand had adequate calcium intake, particularly those who had milk with their meal every day.

Among major reasons for the development of NCDs are smoking and alcohol, but overnutrition and obesity are also major threats to population health. Obesity is related to diabetes and cancer, but also has a genetic background. It is difficult to recommend a healthy nutrition. This is because of conflicting nutritional conceptions, and given the complexity of human metabolism understanding this topic can be difficult for the laymen. Public health measures advocating physical activity and refraining from high intake of energy, sugar and soft drinks need to be enhanced by supporting the ‘intrinsic motivation’ to preserve a good health. The mission of public health should be to increase awareness about the complexity of human metabolism, and the involvement of genetic a...

In contrast to the outcomes of the ‘Alma Ata Conference for Primary Health Care’, it has not yet been possible to introduce an equally powerful health policy for the prevention and control of NCDs. Major strategies so far are to advise individuals not to smoke and drink alcohol in excess. Additionally, ‘healthy’ nutrition and increased physical activity are also advocated. Policy for preventing and working against NCDs is now part of the Sustainable Development Goals, specifically target 3.4. So far, attempts to soften the influence of NCDs on the health of the people in low- and middle-income countries have been unsuccessful. It is argued here that additional concepts on how public health could operate against NCDs are needed. Major risk factors for NCDs interfere with and alter complex steps within the human metabo...

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) comprises a set of NCD risk factors. This study aimed to investigate dietary patterns and to determine the relationship between dietary patterns and MetS and its components. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 468 healthy adults aged 35–60 years who were residents of a semi-urban district of one of the central provinces in the northeast of Thailand. A factor analysis identified dietary patterns based on the consumption of 21 food groups, which were assessed by using a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. MetS was identified by using the harmonized criteria that were stipulated by six leading international organisations. The association between dietary patterns and MetS and its components were evaluated by multiple logistic regressions. The confounding factors adjusted in t...

Eighty-six government and state employees received a blood test by Oral Glucose Tolerance Test with blood glucose levels between 144-199 mg/dl were recruited. Data including general information, attitudes toward food consumption, exercise and weight control to prevent diabetes were collected using questionnaires. The data collection was conducted between January and March 2011. The results showed that 62 percent of the participants were female and most (70 percent) held a bachelor’s degree or more. Of the total, 65 percent had high overall attitude scores. Majority (76 percent) had high attitude scores of exercise. Whereas, high attitudes scores on food consumption and weight control were 58 and 51 percent. Considering attitude not-promoting prevention of diabetes showed that more than 40 percent of the respondents felt unhappy to diet and feel uncomfortable if asking not to eat favorite dishes. In addition, taking sweets, fried and high fat dishes occasionally will not cause obesity. And one-third of the subjects feel that controlling weight will result in unable to eat favorite foods. In conclusion, the subjects with pre-diabetic conditions had a positive attitude to exercise for preventing diabetes but the attitude not promoting prevention of diabetes including diet and weight control were reported. Therefore, there should be public awareness activities to bring about a positive attitude adjustment in food consumption and weight control to prevent diabetes.
