The Mu2e experiment at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory will search for the charged-lepton f... more The Mu2e experiment at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory will search for the charged-lepton flavour-violating neutrinoless conversion of negative muons into electrons in the Coulomb field of an Al nucleus. The conversion electron with a monoenergetic 104.967 MeV signature will be identified by a complementary measurement carried out by a high-resolution tracker and an electromagnetic calorimeter, improving by four orders of magnitude the current single-event sensitivity. The calorimeter—composed of 1348 pure CsI crystals arranged in two annular disks—has a high granularity, 10% energy resolution and 500 ps timing resolution for 100 MeV electrons. The readout, based on large-area UV-extended SiPMs, features a fully custom readout chain, from the analogue front-end electronics to the digitisation boards. The Mu2e experiment at Fermilab will search for the standard model-forbidden, charged lepton flav... more The Mu2e experiment at Fermilab will search for the standard model-forbidden, charged lepton flavour-violating conversion of a negative muon into an electron in the field of an aluminium nucleus. The distinctive signal signature is represented by a mono-energetic electron with an energy near the muon’s rest mass. The experiment aims to improve the current single-event sensitivity by four orders of magnitude by means of a high-intensity pulsed muon beam and a high-precision tracking system. The electromagnetic calorimeter complements the tracker by providing high rejection power in muon to electron identification and a seed for track reconstruction while working in vacuum in presence of a 1 T axial magnetic field and in a harsh radiation environment. For 100 MeV electrons, the calorimeter should achieve: (a) a time resolution better than 0.5 ns, (b) an energy resolution <10%, and (c) a position resolution of 1 cm. Barium fluoride (BaF2) crystals are considered as a candidate scintillator for scintillation dete... more Barium fluoride (BaF2) crystals are considered as a candidate scintillator for scintillation detectors in high-energy physics because of high radiation hardness and short decay time (< 1 ns) of the fast emission component. However, the high level of the slow emission component can deteriorate the detector time resolution. Special approaches are required to decrease this slow component. Using solar-blind photodetectors is one of the possible solutions. In this article, we describe a solar-blind photomultiplier with microchannel plates (MCP) that uses an aluminum gallium nitride (AlGaN) photocathode and a complete scintillation detector channel with a BaF2 crystal and the photomultiplier. The results of the cosmic-ray tests are presented that show the efficiency of detection of the BaF2 fast emission component and suppression of the slow one in the proposed scintillation detector.

Suppression of the slow component of BaF2 crystal luminescence with a thin multilayer filter

The fast component of the barium fluoride (BaF2) crystal luminescence with the emission peak at 2... more The fast component of the barium fluoride (BaF2) crystal luminescence with the emission peak at 220 nm allows those crystals to be employed in fast calorimeters operating in harsh radiation environment. However, the slow component with the emission peak at 330 nm and about 85% of the total emission light could create big problems when working at a high radiation rate. In this work we report results of tests of multilayer filters that can suppress luminescence in the range from 250 nm to 400 nm, which covers most of the BaF2 slow component luminescence. The filters are made by spraying layers of rare earth oxides on a quartz glass substrate. Filters typically comprise 200-220 layers. A few filters were prepared by spraying thin layers on quartz glass. The filters have a peak transmittance of about 70-80% in the range of 200-250 nm. Measurements of the light output of the BaF2 crystal with and without a filter between the crystal readout end and the PMT demonstrate substancial suppression of the slow component. To our knowledge, this kind of filters are produced and tested for the first time.

Photoelectron yields of extruded scintillation counters with titanium dioxide coating and embedde... more Photoelectron yields of extruded scintillation counters with titanium dioxide coating and embedded wavelength shifting fibers read out by silicon photomultipliers have been measured at the Fermilab Test Beam Facility using 120 GeV protons. The yields were measured as a function of transverse, longitudinal, and angular positions for a variety of scintillator compositions, reflective coating mixtures, and fiber diameters. Timing performance was also studied. These studies were carried out by the Cosmic Ray Veto Group of the Mu2e collaboration as part of their R&D program.

Effects of neutron radiation on the optical and structural properties of blue and green emitting plastic scintillators

We report on the optical and structural properties of plastic scintillators irradiated with neutr... more We report on the optical and structural properties of plastic scintillators irradiated with neutron beams produced by the IBR-2 reactor of the Frank Laboratory of Neutron Physics in JINR, Dubna. Blue UPS-923A and green plastic scintillators were irradiated with neutron fluence ranging from 10 13 to 10 17 n/cm 2. Discolouring in the plastic scintillators was observed after irradiation. The effects of radiation damage on the optical and structural properties of the samples were characterized by conducting light yield, light transmission, light fluorescence and Raman spectroscopy studies. The results showed that neutron radiation induced damage in the material. The disappearance of the Raman peak features in green scintillators at frequencies of 1165.8, 1574.7 and 1651.2 cm −1 revealed significant structural alterations due to neutron bombardment. Losses in fluorescence intensity, light yield and light transmission in the plastic scintillators were observed.

ABSTRACT The Mu2e experiment at Fermilab aims to measure the charged lepton flavor violating neut... more ABSTRACT The Mu2e experiment at Fermilab aims to measure the charged lepton flavor violating neutrinoless conversion of a negative muon into an electron. The conversion results in a monochromatic electron with an energy slightly below the rest mass of the muon (104.97 MeV). We expect to set a limit of ∼∼ 6×10 −17−17 at 90% CL in three years of running, using an intense and clean pulsed μ−μ− beam providing ∼∼ 10 1818 stopped muons on target in three years of running. The experiment performs a strong suppression of potential background by gating off the prompts and performing precise momentum determination in conjunction with an highly efficient cosmic veto. The calorimeter should confirm that the candidates reconstructed by the tracker system are indeed conversion electrons and provide an independent trigger (or event reduction filter) for the experiment. It should also provide standalone muon to electron rejection. Moreover, it must be able to keep functionality in a high radiation dose environment inside a 10 −4torr vacuum enclosure and in a presence of 1 T axial magnetic field. In order to accomplish all these tasks, a LYSO crystals calorimeter has been chosen. We show the proposed design and the experimental results obtained by exposing a small size calorimeter prototype to a tagged photon beam from 40 to 300 MeV at the A2 photon facility of the Mainz Microton (MAMI), Germany.

Techniques for manufacturing extruded plastic scintillators with multiple holes for wave length shifting fibers have been developed. Light output comparable to commercial scintillator and good dimensional tolerances have been achieved for 8 mm × 70 mm × 2.5 m planks which can be glued into large sheets.
