However, studies confirm that men with a history of divorce are less likely than married men to view family members as potential caregivers. This paper presents findings from a qualitative study on the experiences of 21 ex-wives who chose to provide mostly end-of-life care to their ex-husbands in mid- and late-life. We examine questions about the situational and motivating factors behind ex-wife caregivers’ decisions, and provide, as background, findings about their pre- and post-divorce relationships. Relational outcomes of the caregiving situation also are considered. Several themes emerge, including patterns of proximity and continued contact post-divorce, despite often chaotic former marital relationships; a desire to spare children from the burdens of care; and an opportunity to renew communication or connections with family through the process of caregiving. Implications of our findings include the need to acknowledge ex-spouses as potential caregivers and better understand the enduring bonds between ex-spouses.

Background: More young families today are headed by unmarried parents due to increases in nonmarital childbearing, cohabitation, and divorce, and these families have fewer resources than married-couple families. Grandparents can provide an important safety net to families in need. Although grandparents today possess a greater capacity to assist their children's families due to increased longevity, good health and financial well-being, little is known about whether their support varies based on their adult children's union status. Method: Data are drawn from the 2015-2017 Add Health Parent Study (AHPS) (https:// www.cpc.unc.edu/ projects/ addhealth/ design/ parents-phase-2), a follow-up study of 2013 parents who participated in the 1995 Add Health Study with their adolescents. Patterns of Giving to Family and Giving to Others in Midlife

Guided by life course and resource perspectives, this study investigated patterns of middle-aged ... more Guided by life course and resource perspectives, this study investigated patterns of middle-aged adults' giving of time and money within and outside their immediate family. National data from Midlife in the United States II (MIDUS II) were analyzed for 759 middle-aged adults. Latent class analysis provided strong evidence for a 4-class model of giving patterns. The four types were (a) General Benefactors (30%), (b) Time Benefactors (28%), (c) Financial Philanthropists (26%), and (d) Uninvolved (16%), revealing that the majority of midlife adults give time and/or money within and outside their immediate family while fewer give money outside their family only or not at all. Middle-aged adults' contextual factors, resource availability and demands, and perceptions of family relationships and non-family roles predicted giving pattern membership. The heterogeneous giving patterns of midlife adults have implications for research and practice.

Objective: The life course perspective and representative U.S. data are used to test Rowe and Kah... more Objective: The life course perspective and representative U.S. data are used to test Rowe and Kahn’s Successful Aging (SA) conceptualization. Four sets of influences (childhood experiences, social structural factors, adult attainments, and later life behaviors) on SA transitions are examined to determine the relative role of structural factors and individual behaviors in SA. Method: Eight waves of Health and Retirement Study data for 12,108 respondents, 51 years and older, are used in logistic regression models predicting transitions out of SA status. Results: Social structural factors and childhood experiences had a persistent influence on transitions from SA, even after accounting for adult attainments and later life behaviors—both of which also impact SA outcomes. Discussion: The findings on sustained social structural influences call into question claims regarding the modifiability of SA outcomes originally made in presentation of the SA model. This study examined basic differences in the prevalence of coresidence with adult children for mi... more This study examined basic differences in the prevalence of coresidence with adult children for middle-aged and older divorcees and widows. Data were obtained from the June 1985 Marital and Fertility History Supplement to the Current Population Survey. Subjects consisted of 11,484 married, 3,854 widowed, and 1,994 divorced women with adult children. The results revealed that for middle-aged women (those under age 60), there were only slight differences between marital status groups; approximately one-half of the women in each group coresided with an adult child. For older women (aged 60 and older), widows were more likely than married women to be residing with an adult child. Widows and divorcees did not differ substantially in the likelihood of coresidence with adult children; slightly more than 25% of the women in each group resided with an adult child. Further analyses revealed that age, recency of marital disruption, and type of marital disruption all played a role in the women's patterns of coresidence with adult children. Cases of coresidence involving daughters rather than sons were more likely among divorced than widowed women in Loth age groups. Divorced women were more likely than widows to share a residence in which they were not the household head. The results suggest that when the type of marital disruption occurs "off-time" (widowhood in middle age, divorce in old age), women are especially likely to depend on adult offspring for support through coresidence. Examining parent-child support patterns over the life-course reveals variations in who plays the ... more Examining parent-child support patterns over the life-course reveals variations in who plays the predominant provider and receiver roles. Although children can expect to play a minimal role in supporting their parents until the parents reach old age, a divorce in the parents' middle years may lead them to call on their children for help. Male (N-16) and female (N-16) college students who had experienced the divorce of their parents completed questionnaires about patterns of family support. In follow-up questionnaires, the students rated changes in the amount of support they both give and receive from parents, siblings, and grandparents. Questions focused on financial support, emotional support, and provision of goods and services. The results revealed that the majority of sons and daughters experienced altered patterns of exchange with their parents following divorce. Generally, their exchange relationships intensified, as both parents and children increased the assistance they provided one another. The analyses suggested that the gender of the child influenced post-divorce patterns of support; sons were more likely than daughters to increase the support they received from their parents following divorce. The gender of the parent also emerged as an important determinant of post-divorce exchange patterns. (NRB)
