In contrast with other works, our method of multiple-factorization is completely symmetric with respect to Reggeon legs. A new general form of Reggeon vertex is obtained, which includes Lovelace's vertex as a particular limiting case, and Olive's one as a special case. Our general Reggeon vertex has simple gauge and twisting transformation properties. We present several non-trivial examples of the three-dimensional quantum Nambu bracket which invo... more We present several non-trivial examples of the three-dimensional quantum Nambu bracket which involve square matrices or three-index objects. Our examples satisfy two fundamental properties of the classical Nambu bracket: they are skew-symmetric and they obey the Fundamental Identity. We contrast our approach to the existing literature on the quantum deformations of Nambu mechanics. We also discuss possible applications of our results in M-theory.

We then discuss whether the c = 1 matrix model can describe the black hole solution of 2D critical string theory. We show that there exists a class of integral transformations which send the Virasoro condition for the tachyon field around the 2D black hole to that around the linear dilaton vacuum. His early passing before finishing his term as Editor-in-Chief of PTEP was a great loss not only ... more His early passing before finishing his term as Editor-in-Chief of PTEP was a great loss not only for PTEP, but also much more so for researchers working in the various fields where he made a lasting mark with his many contributions. The Editorial Board of PTEP decided to pay homage to Professor Eguchi with this special section commemorating his remarkable achievements, especially in the area of mathematical methods in theoretical particle physics. The invited authors include his former collaborators, students, and associates. We hope that the present assemblage of contributing papers as a whole is useful in reviewing and grasping the current status of various research topics related to his main contributions as well as for learning about and remembering his important works, done in collaboration with many prominent researchers from different backgrounds. Some of the contributing papers also contain interesting personal reminiscences about exchanges between Professor Eguchi and the authors. We thank all the authors for contributing to this special section. In particular, we are grateful to Tadashi Takayanagi and Yuji Tachikawa for their endeavors in bringing our project into shape. Finally, it is our pleasure to complete this special section with four papers contained in the present issue, together with five earlier papers published last year in issue 11, volume 2020.

If the internal symmetry is maximal in the sense that the orbit space of the internal symmetry transformations effectively covers the field space in the large- N limit, the internal collective motions are the dominant modes of quantum fluctuations. Conditions for the existence of the large- N master field are discussed from this point of view. Several soluble systems are treated within this formulation and the importance of possible higher hidden symmetries for realistic models is emphasized.

Ilk method is based upon the existence of critical points in the largeN limit of O(11î) etric vector models. We derive a class of ordinary differential equations governing the behaviour the partition function with respect to the coupling constants. Solving the equations explicitly, we derive several exact results. Our model is useful to make comparison with the recent nonperturbative studies of two-dimensional quantum gravity since the structure of the differential equations has many parallel features, such as the flour property, the Vuasoro mere in the Schwinger-Dyson equation, and so on, with those of random surfaces.

Abstract Around the 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole, charged fermion fields satisfy a peculiar bou... more Abstract Around the 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole, charged fermion fields satisfy a peculiar boundary condition which mixes different U(1)-charge states at the monopole core. In a perturbative semi-classical treatment, this seems to imply violation of the charge superselection rule. It is explicitly demonstrated how this difficulty is resolved when higher order corrections are taken into account. We also show that the charge mixing boundary condition is essential for the monopole catalysis of baryon decay and that the chiral anomaly is not directly responsible for this effect. All non-trivial local fermion condensates are derived for an arbitrary number of fermion flavours.

Our approach is based on the Nakanishi decomposition of the n-point Veneziano formula. This decomposition is extended to general loop amplitudes. One advantage of this scheme is that the periodicity problem for the loop amplitudes is automatically removed, at least at the one-loop level. *l If the integrand is fully integrated, this property implies the factorization property.

This lecture consists of three parts. In part I, an overview is given on the socalled Matrix theo... more This lecture consists of three parts. In part I, an overview is given on the socalled Matrix theory in the light-front gauge as a proposal for a concrete and non-perturbative formulation of M-theory. I emphasize motivations towards its covariant formulation. Then, in part II, I turn the subject to the so-called Nambu bracket and Nambu mechanics, which were proposed by Nambu in 1973 as a possible extension of the ordinary Hamiltonian mechanics. After reviewing briefly Nambu's original work, it will be explained why his idea may be useful in exploring higher symmetries which would be required for covariant formulations of Matrix theory. Then, using this opportunity, some comments on the nature of Nambu mechanics and its quantization are given incidentally: though they are not particularly relevant for our specialized purpose of constructing covariant Matrix theory, they may be of some interests for further developments in view of possible other applications of Nambu mechanics. The details will be relegated to forthcoming publications. In part III, I give an expository account of the basic ideas and main results from my recent attempt to construct a covariantized Matrix theory on the basis of a simple matrix version of Nambu bracket equipped with some auxiliary variables, which characterize the scale of M-theory and simultaneously play a crucial role in realizing (dynamical) supersymmetry in a covariant fashion.

It is generally accepted that the double-scaled 1D matrix model is equivalent to the c = 1 string... more It is generally accepted that the double-scaled 1D matrix model is equivalent to the c = 1 string theory with tachyon condensation. There remain however puzzles that are to be clarified in order to utilize this connection for our quest towards possible non-perturbative formulation of string theory. We discuss some of the issues that are related to the space-time interpretation of matrix models, in particular, the questions of leg poles, causality, and black hole background. Finally, a speculation about a possible connection of a deformed matrix model with the idea of Dirichret brane is presented.

Interacting fermionic and pomeronic strings: Gravitational interaction of the Ramond fermion

Since a closed string contains a «graviton» state as a physical state, which reduces to the Einstein graviton in the zero-slope limit, we introduce the interaction of the closed-string graviton with the fermionic string of Ramond in a way analogous to the usual tetrad formalism for the interacting gravitational and spinor fields. By considering the general co-ordinate transformation and the local Lorentz transformation for the fermionic string, we obtain the vertex for an external tetrad field. We show that the vertex satisfies desirable gravitational and supergauge properties. A general form of the vertices describing the emission of the closed string out of the fermionic string is given by extracting the gauge properties of the graviton vertex. In our model, the self-interaction among the closed strings is described by the nonplanar version of the Neveu-Schwarz model. We investigate small perturbations about the spherically symmetric Wu-Yang solution of the Yang-M... more We investigate small perturbations about the spherically symmetric Wu-Yang solution of the Yang-Mills field equation. We show that small nonspherical perturbations are stable. Because of the singularity of the Wu-Yang solution at the origin, S-wave perturbations are not stable. In the case of the Prasad-Sommerfield monopole, we explicitly show that the S-wave perturbations of both natural and unnatural parity are stable.

It is explained how vector models can be used to describe the physics of random filaments with ar... more It is explained how vector models can be used to describe the physics of random filaments with arbitrary random branches. The continuum limit is obtained in the Iarge-N limit by taking a double scaling limit which is analogous to that in the matrix models. The models exhibit various interesting properties, such as, nonperturbative instability, connection with the KP hierarchy, Virasoro structure, among others, which can be compared with the corresponding behaviors of the matrix models. When the target space is a continuum, the critical theories in the scaling limit are equivalent with superrenormalizable local field theories and the fractal dimensions of the random filaments are given by 2k/(k-1) (k=2, 3, ...

The Nambu mechanics, originally proposed by Nambu more than four decades ago, provides a remarkable extension of the standard Hamilton equations of motion in even-dimensional phase space with a single Hamiltonian to a phase space of three (and more generally, arbitrary) dimensions with two Hamiltonians (n Hamiltonians in the case of (n+1)-dimensional phase space) from the viewpoint of the Liouville theorem. However, it has not been formulated seriously in the spirit of Hamilton-Jacobi theory. The present study is motivated to suggest a possible direction towards quantization from a new perspective.
