The adoption of a fully battery-based Electric Vehicles (EVs) in Kuwait apparently seems to be le... more The adoption of a fully battery-based Electric Vehicles (EVs) in Kuwait apparently seems to be less than one percent and hence Kuwait has the lowest indexed-rank among countries around the globe. The absence of fast-charging stations for fully-battery-based EVs and landlords' reluctance to install home fast-charging plugs are the primary reasons for extremely low adoption rates in this country. Because the government of Kuwait is reluctant to give permission for expatriates to own property in Kuwait, fully battery-based EV ownership is restricted to Kuwaiti nationals who reside in their private properties. In addition, the percentage of women with university degrees has been increasing at a logarithmic rate every decade since the 1960s in the USA and since 1990 in Kuwait, resulting in women comprising well over half of all university graduates. Automobile transport is the second biggest contributor to GHG emissions among all sectors [1]. Consequently, governments across the globe play an essential role in technological transitions by introducing EVs' penetration into the markets. The European Automobile Manufacturers Association (EAMA) has categorized electric vehicles into three types: BEV (Battery Electric Vehicles), EREV (Extended Range Electric Vehicles), and PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles). BEV is a vehicle which uses battery as the only power source. EREV is a car that utilizes battery as a primary source of energy for short daily trips and utilizes the hydrocarbon combustion engine for longer daily trips and/or trips that do not rely on high speed, and the battery is charged while driving on the combustion engine. PHEVs are like EREVs where the battery is charged by plugging it into a power source just like BEVs. The technology of lithium-ion batteries is the most optimal and effective solution for electric vehicles due to high energy densities. However, attitude of women towards (EV) in oil rich and conservative countries like Kuwait has not been explored. The aim of this research is to bridge that gap with this study that employed a quantitative method, that is a questionnaire of 234 women drivers. Results showed that more than half of participated women would buy an EV within the next 3 years, if several conditions were met; including cheaper purchasing pricing with government assistance and availability of suitable infrastructure for EV relating to charging stations, fast lanes, and free parking spaces. More than forty percent of the participants would also seriously start thinking about buying EV if the gas/fuel prices increase between 50% to 199% and thought that EVs are safer in relation to fire and car crashes. However, the makers of electric vehicles (EVs) have not been able to penetrate this market, with the exception of innovators and early adopters. The phenomenon in disruptive innovation theory—called “Crossing the Chasm”—regarding a mass market appeal has not yet occurred in Kuwait. Through deep interviews with 12 Kuwaiti owners of EVs and automotive dealers who sold either EVs or Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs), 10 key reasons for this phenomenon have been previously revealed, which were used to develop an extensive questionnaire. The importance of this study provides invaluable information and insights for stakeholders in Kuwait as an example of developing countries. The key objective of this research is to explore the current environmental business sustainability and managerial practices and behavior in Kuwait. This study investigates the extent that managers in Kuwait are continuously involving in developing a vision into practices in terms of sustainability and competitive edge dimensions. This study applies Q methodology to offer a complementary and alternative approach for evaluating the views on corporate environmental issues. The Q study began with the concourse stage where participants were instructed to freely express their thoughts towards environmental issues when making strategic decisions. Following a refinement and clarification of the collected statements, a total of 40 statements were used for the Q sort that was conducted early in 2011. There were 35 participants who successfully sorted 40 statements. The results revealed a three-factor solution and were labeled as 'Sustainable', 'Conservative' and 'Practical' managers.

Before the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) crisis, most academic institutions, i.e., schools,... more Before the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) crisis, most academic institutions, i.e., schools, colleges, and universities in Kuwait utilized face-to-face settings, and hence, were based on only traditional methods of learning. Although many academic institutions have started employing blended learning, several institutions continue to stick with conventional procedures. The sudden outbreak of the COVID-19 crisis has shaken the educational sector in Kuwait, and the Middle East and North Africa region by forcing instructors to shift to the online mode of teaching overnight to maintain their status. Many instructors hesitant of readjusting their conventional pedagogical approach have had no option except shifting solely to an online teaching environment. Consequently, the purpose of this study is to shed light on the challenges and highlight the success factors of e-learning and the online teaching approach during the COVID-19 crisis. This study also proposes some useful suggestions for professionals in higher education institutions, i.e., senior managers, leaders, and others, on dealing with the challenges associated with the online paradigm in the post-COVID-19 crisis time-period.

In the field of IS, researchers use and adapt existing theories to make sense of their data. They... more In the field of IS, researchers use and adapt existing theories to make sense of their data. They also build new theory from their research findings. The way theory is used, adapted or created usually assumes a certain unit of analysis, which could be the artefact, the system, the organisation, the user, the developer, the team or something else. In this paper we propose that 'activity' should also be considered as a suitable unit of analysis for theory in IS since the purpose of any information systems is to facilitate activities of use. To support this proposition, we describe tenets of Activity Theory and how they can be used to underpin IS research. We illustrate these with the interpretation, through Activity Theory, of a study of health information systems development aimed at identifying and meeting the needs of various users' activities. We make the claim for activity as an appropriate unit of analysis in the use of existing theory in IS research and when building new theory for IS.

This study looks at Intensive Care and Palliative Care, as important instances where health informatics could improve public web-based services, in meeting the particular information needs of family members of critically and chronically ill patients. This study is significant in adopting an approach to the usability testing of websites based on concepts from Activity Theory. This takes a realistic and practical approach, which identifies the purpose of the web-site from an end-user perspective and then tests it in situations which simulate typical real-life activities of the user. The results of this work indicate that, with current website designs, face-to-face communication is still the preferred means to fulfil the public's need for health information when family members are in care. The websites used in this study, as is the case with most community health web-sites, did not allow interaction or direct communication between clinicians and the public. The results indicate the rising need for multifaceted modes of communication with different languages, multimedia, and interactive features.

The automotive industry is at a crossroad. Electric Vehicles (EV) now pose an existential threat ... more The automotive industry is at a crossroad. Electric Vehicles (EV) now pose an existential threat to the Internal Combustion Engine (ICE). In some Northern European nations over 50% of new cars sold are EVs, owing in large part to substantial financial incentives to buy and own an EV, such as tax discounts when purchasing an EV, fuel savings, and preferential use of transportation infrastructure. These countries have pledged to cease all imports of non-EVs by 2035. On the other end of the spectrum are Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, where EVs account for less than 1 percent of vehicles on the road, due in large part to financial and non-financial impediments to buying and owning an EV. In addition, the price per kilometer driven in the GCC is considerably lower with gasoline than with electricity, which contradicts the European experience where cost savings from electricity versus gasoline can be around 8 to 1. Furthermore, as there is an absence of purchase and ownership/utilization taxation of vehicles in the GCC, no tax discount can be levied, in contrast to the EV tax incentives common in Europe. This paper explores which qualities of driving and owning an EV in the GCC are necessary to persuade certain kinds of new automobile consumers to pay a higher purchasing price for owning an EV as opposed to an ICE, in spite of higher costs for electricity compared to gasoline per kilometer driven. This pilot study attempts to provide an insight to new car purchasing behavior among consumers in Kuwait via a qualitative innovative approach known as 'Q Methodology'. Interestingly, the factors that emerged from the research represent three subjective perspectives of new car purchase in Kuwait which were labeled as Factor 1, 'Value Seeker'; Factor 2, 'Safety Seeker'; and Factor 3, 'Performance Seeker'. The study concludes that given financial constraints, the 'Value Seeker' group is not likely to become an early adopter of EVs in the GCC region. Conversely, the 'Performance Seeker', which includes mainly younger men who are more likely to view the fast acceleration of EVs as a deciding factor, and the 'Safety Seekers', who are mainly younger women who would value the environmental aspects of EVs as well as the quiet driving experience and low maintenance requirements are determining factors for EV adoption in the GCC region in the future.
