This qualitative study aims to examine teachers' opinions concerning the middle school curricula ... more This qualitative study aims to examine teachers' opinions concerning the middle school curricula that have been in use for years, in order to determine its suitability for distance education during the COVID-19 pandemic. The participants consisted of eighteen middle school teachers from different subject areas in Turkey. A maximum variation sampling method was employed for participant selection. The data was collected through semi-structured interviews. Due to the pandemic, the interviews were conducted using video conferencing applications. The data was analyzed through content analysis. According to the findings, the teachers report that while they are effective in achieving cognitive objectives, they have difficulties in achieving affective and psychomotor objectives. In addition, the teachers do not prefer to design their own materials, rather they mainly benefit from ready-to-use materials during emergency distance education. The teachers also reveal that direct instruction and questioning were the teaching methods and techniques they preferred in online courses and that they were unable to adapt other methods and techniques to distance education, which resulted in students experiencing teacher-centered activities. Moreover, the teachers complain about students not attending the online courses on time or even at all, their disinterest, a lack of instant feedback, limited communication with students, and insufficient course lengths. Another critical finding was that the teachers only use homework, end-of-unit quizzes, and participation to online courses as measurement and evaluation tools and agree that they are unable to administer reliable and valid evaluation tools. The limitations of the study and implications for future research are later discussed.

With this design, the questions of whether the relationship between media literacy and social skill levels of the eighth grade primary school students differs significantly according to gender, having access to internet; as well as whether there is a relationship between media literacy and social skill levels are tried to be answered. This study is based on correlative survey model among general survey models. The study group consists of 947 eighth grade primary school students who study at the schools selected randomly from five different educational areas in the city center of Elazığ. Economical conditions and family profiles were considered in selection of those schools. In the study, two different assessment scales have been used to receive students' opinions. One of them is the "Level Determination Scale for Media Literacy" which was developed by Karaman ve Karataş ( ) and the other one is the "Social Skill Inventory", as translated into Turkish by Galip Yüksel in 2004, which was developed by Riggio in 1989. The study has showed that there is not a significant relationship between media literacy level and social skill level. Considering the relationship according to the sub-factors, it is observed that there is a relationship between some sub-factors; however this relationship is very weak. It is observed that gender of the students does not form a significant difference for media literacy but it does for social skill level. Furthermore, female students' social skill levels are found to be higher. It is observed that the school which the students attend affects neither media literacy nor social skill levels.

The effects of these specific environments on students’ academic success, problem-solving skills and motivations were carefully analyzed and interpreted. In this context, mixed-method, combining qualitative and quantitative methods, was adopted. The pre-test-post-test control group designs were used in the quantitative dimension of the study and the focus group interview was conducted with the experimental group students to support the quantitative findings. The study group of the research involved 68 students in 7th grade in a secondary school. At the end of the research, on the basis of the quantitative data analysis it can be said that: According to the last-tests of the experimental and control groups, the virtual learning environment designed on the basis of the problem-based learning approach was more efficient on increasing the academic success and problem-solving skills of the experimental group students when compared to the control group students. However, findings of the motivation survey indicate that motivations of the experimental and control groups didn’t significantly differentiate. According to the quantitative results of the research, experimental group students delivered positive opinions especially about making lessons more fun and relating to real-life, which are the parts of the virtual learning environment designed according to the problem-based learning approach. It was observed that, in terms of the activities, students had positive opinions mostly about giving the chance to discuss opinions and make interpretations. In addition to this, it was seen that the students believed that their problem-solving skills had developed thanks to the activities. Regarding the topic of conducting group studies while using virtual learning methods, students stated that they had positive opinions as these studies gave them the opportunity to exchange ideas. However, they were disturbed by the fact that there were too many irrelevant interpretations during the process.
