Motivating Learners in Low-Motivation Contexts Rethinking English Language Teaching in Schools, 2025
Motivation is one of the key elements that makes L1 acquisition different from L2 acquisition bec... more Motivation is one of the key elements that makes L1 acquisition different from L2 acquisition because it is a significant factor that has a great impact on learners' success in second or foreign language learning (Ushioda, 2013). Motivation can be defined as learners' positive attitudes towards learning a language combining with their efforts and determination to learn and that helps them accomplish the goals of learning the language . This means that the chance students will be successful or unsuccessful in their learning depends on the amount of motivation that they have for a certain subject in schools. Those who are unsuccessful are frequently considered to lack motivation, while the successful ones are those who are motivated to learn . In Laos, English is taught as a foreign language (EFL) in secondary schools, learners in this context merely learn English in classrooms and do not usually have opportunities to speak English outside the classrooms. This may make them lose motivation to learn the language. Similarly, Brown (2007) argues that the main issue that teachers face when teaching English in EFL contexts is students' lack of intrinsic motivation because they are unlikely to see the relevance of learning it. Additionally, their circumstances may make them use the language only in a class and it is unnecessary for them to use it outside
