This framework has been used in clinical supervision, in "self-supervision," and in team consultation (Green & Herget, in press, 1988). While the present model is derived from systemic/strategic theories, it can be used in consultations with therapists doing individual or conjoint therapy from any orientation.

Although poor school performance is frequently the presenting problem (or an associated symptom) in family therapy, this topic still lacks a coherent conceptual framework, An ecological model is proposed for understanding child and adolescent achievement problems. Four dimensions of a family's learning environment are suggested as foci: (a) family communication deviances; (b) family structure; (c) family attributions; and (d) family achievement values. The metaphor of the family as "primary classroom" is offered as a way to think about learning styles across home and school contexts, and some treatment guidelines are suggested.

Risk and Resilience in Lesbian and Gay Couples: Comment on Solomon, Rothblum, and Balsam (2004)
Journal of Family Psychology, 2004
S. E. Solomon, E. D. Rothblum, and K. F. Balsam's (2004) article ... more S. E. Solomon, E. D. Rothblum, and K. F. Balsam's (2004) article provides excellent descriptive and comparative data about the first cohort of same-sex couples seeking civil unions in Vermont. In this comment, the author sets their findings in a culture-specific theoretical context. This framework emphasizes three external risk factors faced by lesbian and gay couples in American society and the negative internal consequences when partners are unable to cope with these external challenges successfully. Forming a civil union can be viewed as an outgrowth of successful coping with these risk factors--a sign of individual, couple, and family resilience in the face of adversity.

These data were gathered prior to the California Supreme Court decision in May 2008 legalizing same-sex marriage, which held sway for 5 months before California Proposition 8 eliminating same-sex marriage was passed by a voter referendum.
